I'm in the early stages of the lap band process. (saw surgeon for constult, met with pxych- will meet nutrition next, keeping diary, exerciseing...all in the lst month.) A friend of mind is saying DO NOT do band - do sleeve. I've done some reading on differences (notmuch reading as yet) but my question is: Why would a person want the lap band vs the sleeve? Or Why would a person want the sleeve vs the band? Thank you. ~SaraLee~

I'm schl'd for Nov 9th, - so I'm doing the 5-6 shakes /day then 1 vegetable serving and 1 fruit serving. Sometime I mix frozen fruit into my vanilla shake, that's quite yummy. My husband also found this site for me that's very helpful... http://www.lap-band-surgery-site.com/diet-after-lap-band-surgery.html -
question: My surgeon didn't give me any specific instructions (yet...)... for the diet for 2 weeks before surgery - but I plan on keeping cal. intake at 800 and low to no fat. What did your surgeon instruct for diet prior to surgery to shrink the liver the best? I'm schl'd for Nov 9th so 2 weeks before isn't until Friday and I'll be talking to him and the hosp coordinator, but I'm curious what diet the rest of you followed prior to surgery? Thanks so much

Thank you, Becky. You're a Nov bandster, too. I'm schl'd for two weeks from..............TODAY !

Thank you all for your replies. I'll be calling my surgeon today

It's hard to down the shakes? Because? I'm using Costco's premier shakes, they are pretty good, very satisfying. You can be my band buddy since our days are so close

I'm schl'd for Nov 9th - I'm starting my pre-op diet (2 shakes, 1 healthy lean meal) - I'm excited, happy, a bit nervous -
I found out today that I'm approved (letter is on it's way)...so I called my surgeon's office and I'm tentatively scheduled for Nov 9th Soooooo much to do between now and then !

I buy the Landau pants with cargo pockets from Uniform Advantage on line - they're great. UA has plenty of (roomy) tops, too, many cute ones on sale often. Hope that helps !

Thank you, Carole - there was one gal who "liked" something so I guess that's how that happens Have a great day.

Hi everyone, I'm new to lapbandtalk and so happy to see a nurse's group. I'm a new nurse (LVN) but have worked in health care for over 20 years. (CNA, MA) I work in long term care, 50 beds; we do some rehab, hoping to do much more! I'm not banded yet, but my surgeon is submitting paperwork now, as I'm past the psych eval, nutritionist, 1st consult with surgeon. I hope my ins. co approves! I'm married and live in Northern Calif (Modesto area), have 4 (grown) step children, 4 grand children. I love gardening, my dogs, my husband, my family...I'm trying to love exercise I'm hoping to find some great in-person support in our (rural) area. Thanks for creating this group!

Thank you all, for your replies to my first question. It surely gives me a lot to think about. I can see pros and cons for both but what I like best about band vs sleeve best is that band is reversable whereas the sleeve is not. I'm past the psych consult, nutritionist, surgeion consult, I'm keeping a diet journal, exercising and have lost a tiny bit of weight (in comparison to how obese I am) and am now waiting for insurance to approve. I hope they do approve and we'll go from there ! Thank you all again, so much - I appreciate your thoughts and replies.

So, I'm past the surgeon consult, the psych consult, keeping my diet journal, exercising (lost a tiny bit, in comparison to what needs to be lost) and I see the nutritionist tomorrow, who wasn't exactly real friendly on the phone ( "you don't even have diabetes" )...what exactly should I expect with seeing her? Any thoughts? Her comment may have come from how much she could bill me for the consult - as she went on and on about that, too. She said without another diagnosis (besides fatty liver disease)...I'm better off to pay her cash, which she's willing to take only $50 and let me turn that into insurance and see if they'll reimburse me. (but she was sarcastic and sort of rude, so I'm worried what her recommendation will be....) :/... Thank you.

Thank you DesertRose, Tlm, Jim and Honk...for your replies. I did go to the appointment after calling my surgeon's office before I went - the surgeon's office helped me feel a bit better / more confident with the nutritionist - plus my husband went with me as he's supporting me though this. My husband thought the nutritionist was "great" but I noticed she didn't really know much about lap bands and I asked her about bands vs. sleeves (in relation to nutrition) and she said she saw more complications with sleeves because they "slip" Ahem ! She knew a lot about nutrition itself (I'm a nurse, new nurse) so I had some #s on nutrients needed etc. She also said she doesn't do consults after a surgery because "they haven't taught me how" and "every patient is different." She was friendlier in person than on the phone. Although I'm in the Modesto area...area.... is the key word as we're really quite rural and I don't wish to travel far to have the surgery done. She still appeared to be willing to recommend the lap band with my diet success / failure history..and if I'm approved, I'll find another nutritionist to see in Sacramento or somewhere else, after the surgery. I want the continued support ...so...it is what it is The surgeon office also said that she is the only nutritionist they use for all consults...again I'm sure due to availability.... Thanks again, everyone.
