    December 2018 Sleevers!

Kjuno: I asked my Dr about the danger of throwing up due to so many ppl saying they feel naseaus. My Dr said dry heaves won't hurt. She also said throwing up is not the end of the world if we dont have much in our stomach. However if I throw up in the hospital, she will do an upper gi to make sure it didn't cause a leak. I'm gonna stay on top of the nausea meds the first few days, cuz the anesthesia leaving my body makes me nauseas

    Band Removal Advice

Got my band in 2012, lost 90 pounds. Band slipped in 2014, had repositioning surgery. Never able to get properly filled after. Slowly gained 30 pounds. Saw surgeon I. July 2018, got fluid removed, and asked for ins approval for band removal and sleeve. Both were approved. Here is the key: my surgeon does not do band removal and sleeve in same surgery - some surgeons do; mine doesn’t. My surgeon gives the stomach at least 3 months to heal after band removal. However, it is important to seek removal of band and conversion to sleeve both before band removal (even if being done in separate surgeries). Done that way, you don’t have to meet the BMI or 6 month supervised weight loss - approved for both due to band failure. If you see approval for another WLS after the band is removed, you have to go thru all of the requirements I order to get ins coverage (BMI, supervised diet, etc). If you have any questions, lindstrom obesity advocacy is an amazing resource: www.wlsappeals.com. Good luck!

    Heartburn from Water?

I just had my band removed on 8/28, and since then, drinking water on an empty stomach (or during exercise) causes me reflux. I drink lots of water, always have, and the reflux is a new problem. I’m getting sleeved next month and am now concerned going in with reflux
  12. During my first year and a half, I had tremendous success and lost 90 pounds. But at one year and seven months, I had to have repositioning surgery due to a Band slip. I was never able to get properly adjusted after that, so 4 years later, my surgeon recommended removal and conversion to Sleeve. I think it's important for people to know both the good and the bad so that they can make an informed decision. And perhaps the fact that people who have had the Band longer have more negative stories to tell may give some people pause to truly consider this very important decision. Do I regret my Band? Absolutely not! But Did the Band last as long as I expected it to last? Definitely not!

    Lap band removed!

I meant the approval process is harder than getting approval at time of approval for Band removal. If you seek conversion approval at the same time you seek approval for Band removal, you only have to prove Band defect and surgeon's rec to convert. If seek approval after Band removal, then you have to go thru all of the requirements as you would for an initial WLS. For example, no 6 month supervised diet when seeking approval for Band removal and sleeve conversion at the same time (even tho removal and sleeve can be done in separate surgeries a few months apart). However, if Band gets removed and then you want a sleeve, you have to do a 6 month diet if your ins policy requires that for initial WLS

    Lap band removed!

Leeanghadn: I got my Band removed with insurance coverage without a current slip. I called lindstrom obesity advocacy, and they helped me by telling me exactly how to have the doctor submit the request for insurance approval. Also, if you want to convert to another WLS, you need to request that at the same time you request Band removal, or the requirements for a conversion WLS are much harder. Hospital Experiences

Be sure to ask your surgeon ahead of time what pain meds she is ordering and how often you can have them. The nurses will have this info, but they may not go to get the meds until after they are due, and sometime in can take up to an hour to get them. Stay ahead of the pain
  20. Dec 18th for VSG conversion (band removed Aug 28th)
  21. @ElectricBoogaloo: most of the pain was gone by day 10, but the port area still has minor discomfort with exercise
  22. @nosilla: good luck! One thing I didn't expect from the Band removal is how tender my stomach would be from where the port was removed. It took about 7 weeks to be able to exercise without discomfort due to stomach bouncing/jiggling.
  23. @nosilla: i was banded in dec of 2012 and just had the band removed aug 28th 2018. i am scheduled to get sleeve surgery on 12/18. my doctor does band removal and sleeve conversion as two separate surgeries so that the stomach can heal before being stapled.
