    Surgeon Says No...

    Congratulations Jazzy ! I, too, just had my consult with the third surgeon (the first non-advertising one) yesterday and, just as I thought, he has absolutely no reservations doing my surgery ! I'm scheduled for September 18. Now all I've got to do is keep from chickening out If you've been turned down by a surgeon that advertises all over the place because you're situation is a little more complicated, DO NOT get discouraged !!! There are still plenty of good (probably better) surgeons out there that do what they do for everyone, not just the lowest possible risk candidates. You just have to look past the advertisements to find them. I'm actually very thankful that the first two turned me down. In what I'll call a "cosmic coincidence", I met and spoke with an "in the know" person who is closely connected with a major bariatric medical center in Dallas and found out that three of the biggest advertisers here (one of which turned me down) in the D/FW area each schedule 10 to 12 surgeries PER DAY at this medical center that they co-own !! I would jump off the operating table and RUN when I found out that I was their 10th or 12th surgery of the day !!! If sleeve surgery takes 45 minutes to 1 hour, and bypass takes 1 1/2 hours, how could anyone still be at their "best" after that many hours ??? My surgeon schedules 4 or 5 surgeries per day max and that give me peace of mind... I guess that's the reason his first available surgery date wasn't until the middle of September instead of in a week or two...

    Crystal Light Problem

    If you think it may be the aspartame (which I will not touch), try the new Crystal Light Pure. It's sweetened with truvia (stevia). I'm really sensitive to the lemonade type stuff as well, but the berry flavor hasn't bothered me. Good Luck !

    Husband Is Confused...

    O.T.R., let me enlighten you a bit with answers to your questions, and then, as Queen of Crop has suggested, this post is done as it really is unrelated to WLS or support thereof. For the record, Old Testament or New doesn't really matter IMHO. People quote scripture no matter which Testament when it suits their argument... You asked: please tell me what scripture instructs a man to "toss his wife out" while menstuating: Lev. 15: 19-24 Eating or touching of pork: Lev. 11: 6-8 Working on Sunday: Exodus 35: 2 selling of daughters: Exodus 21: 7 I think this is enough to substantiate the point. I have read much, and cultural or not, these things, as well as many others, are used on a daily basis by some to repress and control other human beings, and it makes me see RED. I definately don't fall into the "without sin" category.. I'm on a WLS website because I'm guilty of gluttony and sloth (repeatedly!). I wish the OP, and everyone else nothing but the best !! P.S. O.T.R, I have german blood too and also love a good debate, win or lose...

    Husband Is Confused...

    O.T.R. : I only find two places in this thread where the name of God was mentioned. 1) We have a four year old. Granted it was all talk when we opted to not be so "careful" anymore and thought it would happen when God wants it to happen. 2) We'd definately be having a "come to Jesus" meeting... The first was referencing the conception of a child. The second is nothing more than a figure of speech, not a literal reference. If I overlooked one, you get my point anyway... And regarding your claim of "modern secular feminism" insertion.... OH PULEEEEEZE !!!! Let me "pick and choose" a few more for ya.... Do you toss your wife out of the house 7 days a month due to her uncleanliness ? Have you eaten or touched any pork, worked on a Sunday, or trimmed your hair and beard ??? According to the bible, these things, among many others, are abominations that call for death as a punishment. Don't even get me started on the other parts that sanction things like selling your daughter into slavery, or getting the entire town together to stone someone because they were blasphemous or cursing. It goes on and on, ad nauseum.... Yes, you are correct that no marriage is 50/50, I stand corrected. A marriage is 100/100 and in the 21st Century, yes, if you want to live well above the poverty level BOTH parents work outside the home, unless one of you has an unusually high paying job,. No one was selectively referencing the Bible, and quite frankly, I find the concept of "man" being the hunter/provider and "woman" being the subservient little wife who is supposed do everything else including wait hand and foot on her "man" absolutely laughable, and I am a christian woman. "Providing" for your family is about SO much more than "providing" a paycheck. Children do benefit from having both parents in the home, but only if BOTH parents participate in a thoughtful, productive, and supportive manner. It's 2012, not 1912, and a woman "needs" a man, like a fish "needs" a bicycle !!! I kept a trash can handy when changing diapers and I barfed into it way more than once, so I "just couldn't handle it" either, but I damn sure did it anyway; repulsive or not; and so did my barfing ex-husband. He "just couldn't handle" it either, plus alot of other things, and that's how he became an ex. P.S. Perhaps making a chauvanistic, he-man macho comment in a forum named : powder Room - Ladies Gone Wild wasn't such a great idea...

    Husband Is Confused...

    I'd say he's more than just a little bit confused... He's out of his little mind ! A marriage is a PARTNERSHIP, a 50/50 PARTNERSHIP ! And that means that the care of your and HIS child is a SHARED responsibility. No one likes dealing with a sick baby, or poopy diapers, but that's just part of having a kid. He needs to grow up, and unless your name is June, his name is Ward, and your kids name is Beaver, he needs to be shaken out of his delusion and do his part ! I haven't had wls yet, but I lost around 200 pounds already; weight that was holding me down and destroying multiple relationships in my life; but most importantly, my relationship with me. It's called the DIVORCE diet ! Having a kid to take care of is hard enough, so who needs a lazy adult baby to take care of as well ? If he won't even take care of his own child, how do you think he'd treat you if you needed his care ??? I know I'm a bit harsh, but I spent 16 years trying to change someone who cared only about themselves and their needs. You can't change them; only they can change themselves; but they can drastically change you, and rarely is it for the better. We'd definately be having a "come to Jesus" meeting... Marriage isn't easy, and it definately takes alot of work, but like Dr. Phil says, a child is much better off coming from a broken home than living in one... Just my 2 cents... for what it's worth.
  9. It probably is a blessing he didn't go ahead with it. Dr. Alvarez refused me surgery when I told him that my spleen had been removed 30 years ago. Called me "high risk" (for bleeding) even though I've had other surgeries with absolutely no problems. He wants only the lowest possible risk patients so his complication rate numbers don't go up. I refer to him as one of the "cherry pickers" (Dr.'s who are so over run with patients because of internet and TV advertising that they can pick and choose to take only the best possible candidates. I've been refused by two cherry pickers. He really shouldn't be keeping all of your money since he didn't actually perform the procedure. And for those who just LOVE Dr. Alvarez (and there are many !), I'm happy for you, and I know his patients are very loyal, but this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it, so please resist the tempation to jump to his defense. You were fortunate that he thought you were low risk enough to do your surgery. My best advice, and after running the logic,what I have done, is to seek a surgeon who is major hospital or university based and gets most of their patients via referrals from their colleagues, not advertising dollars. They have more training and resources and are better equipped to handle more than just the best case scenario patient. They don't need to advertise to keep their schedule booked nor do they do a dozen surgeries a day. I am self pay also, so I know the cost is significantly more in the States, but this is your life we're talking about... I'll let you know if I get refused again after my consult on Aug. 8th. P.S. I'm near Ft. Worth and my potential surgeon is 3 hours east. A little far from home, but a great price and great credentials :}

    Surgeon Says No...

    I, too, am curious about the name of the surgeon. I also have been turned down by two surgeons because of prior surgery (my spleen was removed 30 years ago !). With that said, these two surgeons are ones who advertise on TV and/or Internet sites such as this. Once I started researching surgeons via their reputations with their peers, those who aren't so flush with "best case scenario" patients and advertising dollars, I found a very well regarded surgeon who said there is absolutely no reason other than "reputation concerns" that a surgeon would refuse to do my surgery because of my spleen was removed. In fact, he said that having no spleen would make the procedure easier for him since it offers a less crowded area in which to work. The surgeons who refused are more interested in the "easy money" patients who require the least amount of time and effort possible. Also, as a self pay person, they don't make as much money off me as they do an insurance company. It's one flat fee, no nickel and diming an insurance company to death for this and that... IMHO, surgeons who advertise on TV/Internet are kinda like lawyers who chase an ambulance to the hospital after they've seen a bad car accident.... No offense to anyone intended, just my personal opinion...
