How long is the process at Mount Sinai Clinic, Chicago?

Good luck. I am from Boston and had to have at least 3 visits with the dietitian before the insurance would allow the band. They were 1 month apart. Because of the hospital being taken over by a bigger one it took me 10 months for the surgery to happen and that was with getting pushed through the system. Every hospital is different with their requirements.

I want to lose it fast

Wonderful! I have always said I didn't get fat in one year and I expect it to take 1 1/2-2 years to get to a livable weight. I know it's a tool, not a cure all. I love when you share your thoughts with us. Thank you.
  3. Good luck with your new journey. You will not be the largest person at the support. I was far from it and i weighed a lot. I go every month. I started about 10 months before I got banded and now I am 10 months after band and still go. This week the hospital chef is making 3 different meals with the dietitian of the WLS group. Good luck with your choice. We all can lose weight but keeping it off is why I think, all of us have the band, our tool for life.

    Help!

Congratulations on the Band. Never have anything without checking first. Chewing gum is a no-no because if you swallow it, it has to be surgically removed. I know I had SF Popsicles and sucked on ice chips.

    baby back ribs

thank you everyone. What I want to know is how much food is on each rib. I did eat about 7-8 bones for dinner. They weren't very meaty but I felt comfortable eating that amount without getting stuck.

    baby back ribs

Hello BBQ people Does anyone know how many ounces of meat are on baby back ribs? I made them for dinner, they were super great. I slow cook them in the house on 200 for about 5-6 hours with a little BBQ sauce and then add more sauce and put them under the broiler or on the BBQ (raining in Boston) until they look done, not long. The real way to cook them is with a dry rub until they are ready for the broiler/BBQ. My son does Texas BBQ catering and he taught me. His are the best! And his burnt ends (brisket) are to die for. Thank you-cooks.
  8. The only sandwich I ever have is when I make it. I have 1/2 a grilled marble rye with turkey and cheese melted on the bread. I eat bread all the time in restaurants but the crusty ends not the doughy parts. This just made me decide to make a sandwich for lunch. I was having a hard time deciding, thanks.
  9. You're not too old. I was almost 62 when I had the band. My health has done a total turn around for the better. Wish I knew about the band many years ago. Go to support groups and you will see people over 60 there. I feel I will live longer now.

    New on the block

Good luck with whatever surgery you choose. The band was my only thought. You don't remove any body parts for good. It can be reversed if need be. As far as vitamins and minerals, all mine are chewables. They are available everywhere. Your doctor and or dietitian will tell which ones to buy. Bariatric Advantage has all the correct ones for every WLS and their prices aren't bad and they are a 3 month supply. They make a wonderful protein powder but very costly. I follow or least try to follow my dietitian's recommendations for foods. My doctor has different thoughts on straws and what to eat after a fill that may be different from another person's doctor. Follow your doctor's advice not someone elses. Good luck with your new journey, I love mine and know the band has helped me a real lot.
  11. The best thing I ever did was the BAND!! I am zero regrets. You treat it right and it will treat you right. Like everything else in this world when you are advised not to do something and then do it, whose fault? Speeding in a car and texting while driving, same thing, you are advised not to but people do it and end up hurt or dead. Follow your doctor's advise and you should have no problems I don't look for the bad, I only want to hear about the good. Yes I wear blinders. People who have by pass or the sleeve, eat too much and they stretch it out and have problems too.

    Split personality....

I knew when I started this whole venture/journey that it took years to get fat and I planned on it taking 1-2 years to get to a livable weight that I would be comfortable with for my age. I had chosen 170 for a goal and then thought maybe lighter than that and when I saw my doctor 1 week ago he said he is thrilled with me now, 60% of my BMI gone. When I got married 42 1/2 years ago I was 144 (with diet pills) and that was a nice size for me, I think. Take one day at a time and one pound at a time. It may take over 1 year to get to the magic number for you.

    Day 4 and feeling better

Dark urine is also from not enough liquids. Better check, is right. Also about shakes, I was given one before I left the hospital to make sure I could keep it down. I am very happy you are feeling better today. Each day will get better.

    Best Protein Shakes

The only kind I buy. I only drink chocolate and add 8 oz skim milk, a little decaf instant coffee, peppermint extract and tons of ice and make a thick shake. They are great. HAVE one every morning for Breakfast for over 1 year.
  15. I never watch any you tubes. I never investigated the band. My lung doctor signed me and said you are to go this meeting and get the band. I never looked back. I am off all meds except for the required Vitamins and minerals. I don't snore anymore. Blood pressure is great and I took 6 pills a day just to eat. All done with them. That to me is called success no regrets!!

3 Days Banded and in pain

Congratualtions on being banded. Use a heating pad for the gas pains, it does help. The gas pains lasted about 3-4 days with me. Good luck with your new journey.
  17. Congratulations!!! I told a few and most of my close family only. No one's business as far as I am concerned. Someone recently asked me how much weight I lost and when I told her that was private, she almost sh*t herself with my answer. my MIL thought that was an awful thing to ask someone. my MIL doesn't know how much, only my husband and this site. Good luck.

Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?

I just looked at the boxes. They are Cliff Builder's 20g protein bar. I buy chocolate, chocolate peanut better and chocolate mint. They all taste good. I buy them at Target for $7.84 for I think 6 in a box. I just ripped the top off to see what. I am very fussy with what i eat and I found these 3 flavors good. I have seen some flavors at Walmart, also for about the same price.

    surgeries going bad

Surgeries going wrong/bad has been a topic lately. This can happen with any kind of procedures done by the top doctors and hospitals. About 3-4 years ago my dermatologist didn't like a small mole I had. I went to a top Boston hospital to have it removed. Because it was under the belly fat they had to tape my fat belly. I don't do well with tape and got tape burns, aloe took care of that. The mole was removed and I got an infection from the incision. The infection turned into MRSA (I hope I spelled it right). It took 3-4 different antibiotics until the right one was found to get me healed. I was at the hospital every 2-3 days to have them look at it. My husband had to clean it for me 2-3 times a day with saline and medicines. That was suppose to be a no brainer removal. So you just never know. I have had zero problems with the BAND!! Everyone is different. Please stop knocking the Band, I love it, it helps me be under control of my intakes etc. Yesterday I had a stuck moment, it sucks when that happens. I walked and then burped and was fine. My fault, not the band, it just reminds me to be more perfect. No one is perfect. Enjoy your weekend everyone. Stay dry-Boston is heavy rain for the next 24 hours. Arlene aka Eye Candy

Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?

my dietitian said there is approximately 7 g of protein for every once you eat. I have the 2 scoops of Protein powder to make sure I get in my protein. The brand I use is about 52 g for the 2 scoops. I was having a different protein bar and then she said to switch to the Cliff ones.
  23. Congratulations on having the band. I did not find this site until after I got it. I don't know if knowing less was worse or better. I did learn from going to support groups monthly for about 8 months before the surgery and I still go every month. This Thursday a hospital chef is doing a tasting of 3-4 recipes with the dietitian's help. My doctor and dietitian were great with information.
