sleep centers are a scam
mommatbird replied to brent0517's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon says that around 98% of his patients have sleep apnea. Now that stat does seem a bit high. Either he is being duped by skewed data by the sleep center he uses or he's benefiting somehow. Either way, I think it's a scam in general. That being said, I think it truly exists. My husband who is not overweight, has it. Without his mask, he snores like a train! I just did my sleep study and it was pure hell. I had to take an ambien which didn't work. 3 hours of softly crying turned into a full blown panic attack. But instead of ripping all the wires off and running like I wanted, I stayed with it because I want this so badly. Well, it's no shocked that I have sleep apnea. They found something wrong with my breathing after 2 hours of sleep after being drugged and in distress. I've never slept on my back but they made me do so, never snored but I've always breathed very lightly. Never a problem. My mom finally got used to it looking like I wasn't breathing. So now another night of hell to see how much pressure I need. Maybe I'll give my machine to my husband to replace is old one. I think they see a fat person come in and see dollar signs. -
Today I cried (bawled) on the phone when the nurse called and told me there is something written in my insurance that says it will not cover any type o bariatric surgery. Period! I felt like something so close was snatched away from me just like that. My husband works for the city and they have excluded bariatrics for cost reduction. So now I go self pay. It will be a struggle but this is how much I want this. Hubby wants it for me as well and has offered to cash in a retirement fund from a former job of his. I feel guilty to take this away from him but this will keep my health costs down in the future.

Am pre surgery and making my pro list for when I tell my friends of my intentions later. A family of 4 can easily spend $50 plus eating out and my grocery bill (with 2 teenaged boys) can reach $200 a week. I'm thinking after surgery that when my family eats out then I'll just take a little entree from hubby or kids (as long as its good for me) or order a la carte. So, how much are you saving on food a week/ month?

Hi there. I have been overweight for what seems forever, been on diets all my life and have been looking into a bariatric surgery for over 5 years now. After finally reaching my low of wishing for a way out of this body I feel trapped in, undecided to act. It's time to do something big. The last time I lost weight was 2 years ago when I actually trained like a kick boxer with a trainer. I lost 30 pounds but I couldn't keep up the pace. I have crackly knees and bad congenital hips. I've had an emergency back surgery for a terrible disk that I had fought with for 12 years and don't want to repeat that. I got a bit of crushing news today. My insurance has something specifically written in it that says they will not pay a single dime for bariatric surgery. So my husband picked me up today emotionally and said he would cash in a retirement fund from an old job to pay for the surgery. This will get done. I'm hesitant to tell anyone because some of my friends have already said that i could lose weight if I would just stop eating and exercise. Ha! They don't get it.

Thank you for your welcomes. I'm happy to be starting this journey. I look forward to the day my hips and knees don't hurt as much. I'm really looking forward to the day when I am able to run. Just run. Hubby did add a caveat to cashing in the account for this surgery. The bike is in the house (on a stationary tripod because it's been well over 100 every day) and I am to 'train' for my EKG and surgery. I think I can do that.

When I had my tonsils out at 15, my mom made the best mush for me. She took chicken and some green beans and broth and just blended the crud out of it. And I guarantee it was better than baby food! As far as baby food goes, the meat is gross. Carrots and sweet potatoes are okay. I think you'd be better of with a protein you cook the way you like it then blend away.
