  1. I'm doing the pre-op liquid diet now, my surgery is on Thursday. I was having those same issues, but they DID go away after the 6th or 7th day. Make sure you're keeping hydrated with water. I found that even though i was getting 64oz of water, it wasn't enough to keep me from feeling dried out - literally, even my EYES felt dry. Hang in there, hopefully your hunger will pass also!

Eight days until my VSG surgery!YIKES!

I don't think you'll ever be able to forget your pre-sleeved self... but it definitely doesn't hurt to record how you're feeling for posterity! I'm getting sleeved on May 2nd, so it will be cool to see how you progress. I wish you great success and a speedy recovery! Your future self is just gonna wonder why you waited so long to do this! (My future self will be saying the same thing, I'm sure of it!)

    Old Habits Die Hard...

I don't think it's a smart alec response to say that I'll do what I want to do (which IS something I've said, and recently, so I'll assume this comment is about me specifically). I've also never encouraged anyone to do something harmful to themselves. I've never name-called or taken pot shots at anyone, so maybe this isn't directed totally at me, but I think I've been lumped into quite a bit of what you're protesting against as far as comments and/or advice. You say in the original post you're "really bothered" about going against doctors orders, then respond again saying you're not that bothered by the opposing viewpoint. Which is it? I never presumed you were obtuse or unable to learn new ideas, so I really don't know where the defensiveness is coming from. :\

    Going home

    Old Habits Die Hard...

Everyone is entitled to and has their own opinion. I have never looked at any doctor as giving me "rules" by which to life. It's medical advice. Sound advice to be taken seriously, but we all ultimately have to decide what's best for us. I've given the "it's your body" advice more than once, and I stand by it. Not everyone is the same. Not all surgeons give the same instructions for post-op. We've all got to find our way here, to find what's best for us. If what's best for you is to follow the instructions and you can do that without seriously struggling, then that's awesome! But people post here for others' opinions. I don't understand why you'd get that bothered about someone else's viewpoint. To each their own. I wish everyone luck on their road to goal.
  10. Sleeve day is Thursday. Eeeek! I made a whole list of chores and such to accomplish this weekend. So far, I'm only about 20% done so tomorrow is either gonna be a really long day, or some of these things just aren't gonna get done! Getting my bags ready - hospital bag and bag of stuff to take to my parents house. I figure I'll let them pamper me for a day or two before I'm home alone. Took my "before" pics today. Wish I did this 53lbs ago when I started so I could see how much I've already accomplished, but better late than never, right? Taking the pics made it feel so 'real'. THIS IS ACTUALLY FN HAPPENING!!! YAY! I'm excited/nervous/scared/anxious/happy - all at once. It's an interesting emotion! liquid diet is going well. All my hunger went away when I was taken off my bp meds last week. The very next day it was gone, hasn't come back since. I have no idea if the bp meds had anything to do with it or not. Looking forward to getting the surgery, getting through my stages, and actually having something TO CHEW ON again. Happy Saturday, yall!

    Returning to work!

I'm going back to my office job after 2 wks. I tried to get it down to 1 wk because that's what I took when I had my gall bladder out a few years ago and I was fine. But my surgeon said to give it at least 2 wks so that's what I'm doing. I've heard of office job types going back after a week. Personally, I think I'd get bored if I had to wait more than 2. Good luck!

    the final countdown...

Good luck!! Can't wait to hear how things go for you post-op.

    Preop diet starts TOMORROW

Congrats! I'm having surgery Thursday - my liquid diet doesn't allow for 1 meal a day, so I'm pretty jealous! The first week was rough. I started doing shakes as Meal Replacements for weeks prior to the liquid only and it was still tough. But after the first week, my hunger miraculously vanished! I haven't been hungry in days - I just feel "empty" sometimes and then I know it's time for a shake. I mean, I've been awake for 4 hours and just now realized I've only had a cup of coffee. Time for a shake! Also, IDK if I'd get through this if it weren't for tomato Soup. I've always been a fan of tomato soup, tho, so maybe that's not something that will help you. For me, I look so forward to it! I'm sick of the shakes! I like the nectar - the chocolate truffle is one of the best chocolate shakes I've tried. I've been using Premier Protein shakes that I get at costco (and I've read they are at Sams Club, too) because they are 30g protein per shake and they are ready-to-drink which is just more convenient for me. Keep yourself busy, it helps with the hunger. Hopefully your hunger will go away as well! Good luck!

    Are u big enough?

I'm guilty of saying the exact same thing when my mom told me a family friend had gastric bypass. It was totally unfair of me - 1) it's her business, and obviously she was "big enough" and 2) I haven't seen her in years to know how heavy she got or to see her now that she's had the RNY AND her tummy tuck. My mom says she looks great, but was also surprised because she didn't seem "big enough" to her, either. Even still, I'd never SAY that to someone. My opinion on her being big or small ultimately only has to do with ME and how I feel about MYSELF in comparison. It was actually a wake up call for me to see that I'm quite a lot heavier than she was and was questioning if this was something I had to do. As someone who's only told a few people about my upcoming surgery, I'm surprised by how much it upsets me that people who I've told are SO EXCITED for me to have this. I read between the lines and interpret that as them saying, "It's about time you did SOMETHING!" even if that's not what's said. For me, I have to learn to stop being so sensitive about my weight issues. It's not like it's something I can hide - I can't hide my size now, and people WILL notice when I start losing in big numbers... I have to learn to deal with the reactions!

    Self-advancement of diet?

to the OP - did you do a pre-op liquid diet? I'm doing one now, for 2 wks prior to surgery. My hunger was gone after the first week. Just curious if you did a pre-op diet, if you had hunger up to the surgery date?

    Self-advancement of diet?

Ohhhh, you're not gonna get much support on this forum to "go against doctor's orders"!! Many forum wars have been foraged over what we can eat, when we can eat it, and what we MUST NEVER. EAT. AGAIN. To which I say, "Whateva! I do what I want!" (anyone get the South Park reference? haha) While I think head hunger and reflux are valid points to keep in mind, I think ultimately this is your body and you should do what feels right for you. You'd probably only be able to have a bite of something anyway. Keep it soft and chew well, I think you'd be fine. But only IF you really feel you must. If you can, try to put it off another day to get closer to what your surgeon has recommended for you. The post op diets I've read about and seen posted about here are so varied from surgeon to surgeon - there are surgeons who put you on a soft diet within days of surgery and others who want you on liquids for weeks, so I don't think you're in danger of hurting yourself with a tiny spoonful of soft scrambled eggs or something soft like that. Good luck!
  17. Totally agree with BethinPA - she's a nurse in a bariatric unit, she's seen the ugly side of this. That's to be expected. MOST people go through this with no issues, but some people have problems. Just like MOST people have, for example, gall bladder surgery with no problems, but some people have a complication. It's bound to happen with surgery, but not more so with this surgery over any other surgery. I work in health insurance as an underwriter, and for a long time I had a negative attitude about WLS because I would see people's medical records who've had surgery. People who regained all their weight and still had or "regained" their comorbidities. But I realized that that doesn't mean that it will be like that FOR ME. Those people made bad choices or maybe weren't as invested in their new lifestyle. Medical records aren't going to tell you how that person thinks or feels or how they really live their life. In her job, your SIL sees people when they are at their worst, but that doesn't mean that's the end of the story for those patients. People are there when they have a problem or when they are in their first few weeks post op and not at their best - they don't make an appointment to say, "Oh yeah, everything has been wonderful and my life is so much better now!" so her viewpoint is biased. Because I work in a department of other underwriters, and I know most have the same opinion of WLS from a professional/underwriter viewpoint, I just don't want to share my surgery with any of them. ESPECIALLY pre-op - the potential for negative responses alone is enough to keep me quiet on the subject. Maybe after the surgery is over with, I'll be more comfortable sharing my story. I know that for many of my friends, I've been their "Fat Friend" or their "Fat Accomplice" - the person they turn to when they want to feel better about themselves simply by comparison. Or the person they can go eat something terrible with and I won't judge them or make them feel self-conscious. One friend even asked me "Who am I gonna be fat with now?" It was meant as a joke, but I think there was some truth in it also. It's an adjustment for everyone that's close to you. While your SIL might be overly negative about it, I think she's ultimately trying to be helpful because she's concerned. Tell her you appreciate the concern, but that you're trying to stay positive. I think if you put it that way, it'll let her know she's being negative without you having to specifically say it. No need to start a fight or "put her in her place". Good luck!

    the final countdown...

I'll be posting my progress, for sure! I'll have my phone handy in the hospital, pretty sure I'll be on this forum if I'm not sleeping or walking around the unit. Good luck to all of you with your upcoming surgeries!

    May 2 here

I have no advice as I'm pre-op as well, but I'm getting sleeved May 2nd also! Sleeve sisters! I hope we both have a speedy recovery. Good luck to you!
  20. You ARE obsessed with this topic. But you explain it so hilariously, I don't mind. MOM is my friend as well. I'm glad it helped clear you out like you've been wanting!

    I Hereby Solemnly Swear...

Here, here! One of my friends who is also overweight asked me if she could eat something in front of me the other day. She asked if I would mind. I said, "YOU BETTER EAT IT!" I'm not gonna judge her (or anyone else) for how they live their life, and SHAME SHAME on that person who posted the "sick to my sleeve" picture. I don't think losing weight made her that way! Once a jerk, always a jerk!!

    I was just sleeved Friday

I know you're still in the hospital, but ask someone to bring you Gas-X strips. And walk around as much as you can. Good luck, and I hope you have a speedy recovery!

    How much Biotin?

I've been using a liquid form, 3,000 mcgs per dose. I use it once a day and put it in a drink so I don't taste it. It's a "mixed berry" flavor, but it tastes like cough syrup. Biotin is not toxic. It won't harm you, you can't use "too much". However, post sleeve we get regular blood work, so if you're using too much I'm sure your MD would tell you. Prior to using liquid, I was using a pill form and it was 1,000 mcgs. Biotin takes about 6-8 months to start showing results, so I upped my dosage now (pre-op) so I can hopefully keep my hair from thinning too terribly when I'm at 3-4 months post-op like a lot of people experience. I get my biotin at puritan.com, if you're interested. They have good deals.

Weight Lifting at Night Yields Maximum Muscle Building Power

So... I also read your "morning cardio burns more fat" post. You sayin I gotta go to the gym twice a day? I guess it's not a bad idea, but when's a broad supposed to have a social life? LOL thanks for the tips, tho. I'll stop doing the "hit the treadmill and then do weights" routine since that's obviously backwards!

    Sleeved tuesday home last night

Oh, honey, as little as you'll get down right now, I wouldn't even be thinking of carbs! I got some cream of chicken and cream of asparagus, from what I've read, they are good as long as you strain them so you don't have any of the little bits. Throw some unflavored Protein powder in them too for an extra boost. I'm having surgery on Thursday, I hope you're both doing better each day. I'll be having the same struggle soon enough! Good luck!
