It is my turn up to bat!
makemyownluck replied to JProx's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How you feelin today? I'm super sore. Just took my first shower n I'm exhausted! -
Had surgery on Thursday morning and was discharged today. All is well, just tender and sore in the belly. Apparently I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and morphine combo which made my heart rate and blood pressure drop very low. Heart rate was in the 40s and my bp was in the 80s/50s. I didn't feel anything because of it, just really tired. But after getting off the morphine, it all came back around to normal, so I guess it's all good. They did tell me I have an arrhythmia, it's mild, but I need to follow up with my doctor on that. Other than that, I'm doing okay. Pain is okay, meds definitely help. I'm finally on "the other side" of this journey. I'm excited to see where it takes me...

first post op post!
makemyownluck replied to makemyownluck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you everyone!! Still sleepy and sore but I'm okay. Passed my leak test so they finally brought me some fluids. I'm off the morphine, it was making my bp and heart rate really low. I'm on Norco now, but using less and less. It can only get better... -
...and happy Sleeve Eve to my fellow May 2nd sleeve brothers and sisters out there! I'm scheduled for 1030 am tomorrow and I'm so very excited!! :)

That is nothing short of amazing!! You must feel like a new person! -
You aren't nuts. There's literally hundreds of posts on this forum of other people who cheat on their pre-op diet! I've had hard enough of a time on mine WITHOUT having to cook for other people. I can only imagine that it's that much harder if you have to cook for a family while maintaining a diet. It is definitely hard to do this, you are NOT alone in slipping up. As long as you keep trying, that's what's important. Yes, you need to do the diet, but I think any rational surgeon is going to understand that people cheat. After all, being unable to control our eating is what makes us overweight and need surgery! If you're able to maintain it for 2 our of your 3 meals, you're still accomplishing the goal of shrinking your liver so surgery is easier. As hard as it is, I do know from experience that if you hang in there, it does get easier. Your hunger does eventually fade away if you aren't cheating. It really is the fat/carbs/sugar that makes you crave more! People say there are carb addictions and it's so true! They keep you in the cycle of being hungry. You DO deserve the sleeve, you deserve the chance to have a tool that helps you with these impulses!! Tomorrow is a new day - just keep trying your best, and don't beat yourself up. This is all part of what will be YOUR OLD LIFE. Everything will change - and for the better!!

Thank you so much everyone! Good luck to all my fellow May 2nd sleevers!! I'm going under the knife at 10:30am. I swear, I could NOT concentrate at work today!! Soooo much on my mind. I'm so excited for tomorrow to come. I can't wait to get on the other side and start my post-op life and recovery. Thanks so much for the love, I'll definitely be on here as soon as I can to update yall on how it goes. -
Sleeve Sisters!! Happy Sleeve Eve to you! My surgery is at 10:30am. When you're getting your IV in, ask them to give you a scope patch. It's an anti-nausea patch they give to people with nausea/dizziness/vertigo and they can put it on you before surgery so you're not sick when you wake up. Good luck!!

How long out of surgery could you...
makemyownluck replied to dansgem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think if you stay under the weight lifting restriction, you can do as much as your body will let you. Until the incisions are healed (meaning no longer scabbed), you should avoid submerging in Water. I'm glad you're feeling up to things! -

It's definitely your choice on who to tell. If you're not comfortable telling your mom, then don't. I haven't shared with many people because I also don't want to think about any possible negative reactions, but I also couldn't imagine going through this without my mom, either. Luckily, you have a husband who will stand by your side. Would you ever tell her? Or just not right now?

I'm gonna start singing because this fat lady (me), is OVER it!
makemyownluck commented on Flutterby's blog entry in Flutterby's Blog
I'm a singer, too. Funny that I worry that I won't be able to sing as powerfully without my weight backing me up. I've read about opera singers who can't perform the same way after losing weight... and I was classically trained in opera, so even singing popular music, I use the same techniques! I'm hoping for more confidence to get out there and share my gifts with others as well! I wanna re-do all my youtube vids and actually SHARE them with people! -
I wonder about that, too. I think we're safe from it tearing open, but I wonder what happens if you have too much scar tissue? I wonder if it keeps building up through the years or if the scar tissue stops once you are healed? Could you get a stricture in your stomach because of scarring or adhesions? But like you say, it's not enough to stop me. I'll just have to deal with whatever if/when it happens!

update your ticker, girl! you're already on the road to success!! -
I am going to my 2nd surgeon consult on Friday. I'm supposed to schedule my surgery on that visit, and I haven't yet told more than a handful of people that I'm doing this. I told my BFF and my parents, and I discussed it with my manager at work. Tomorrow, I have a meeting with my supervisor (my manager is no longer in charge of me since I told her about my plans back in July, so my new supervisor doesn't know what's going on with me), and I plan to tell her that I'm going to have surgery. Then I need to talk to HR about using FMLA/taking time off, and I'm just concerned with how much my privacy will be respected. I plan to preface every convo with "This is private info that I don't want disclosed to anyone else without my consent". Is that being overdramatic? I work in a really gossipy office... Frankly, I don't want to tell all my coworkers. But I work on a very small team, and a 2 week absence will be noticed. By everyone. So what do I say? Do I make up some stupid lie? Or do I bite the bullet and tell the truth (considering people will probably start asking questions when the weight comes off anyway)? Also, I've had this news on the tip of my tongue to tell my other friends for the longest time... but it doesn't come up. Now, I already know it's not gonna come up in conversation UNLESS I BRING IT UP, but I just don't want to deal with the judgment that could come with telling this news. Do I really care what anyone says? I mean, not to the point that it's going to change my mind, but I just don't want to see any of the people I care about differently because of how they may react to the news. And I don't know what it means that IN MY HEAD, I'm imaging that the people who love me would be anything but supportive... So, moreso than sharing my plans with friends/family, I wonder how everyone else has dealt with telling the news to others, like coworkers/bosses. Did you come clean beforehand? Or after the fact? Or not at all? What were your reasons for making your choice? Did you tell your whole family? or keep it to yourself? I appreciate anyone who replies, please be honest... no judgment!

Why the sleeve and not gastric bypass?
makemyownluck replied to Ree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As you can see from these responses, it's a highly personal choice. I'd make a list of questions to ask your surgeon and make sure you are truly confident that you're making the best choice for you. In the end, weight loss IS the goal, but we do have to live our lives as well. Personally, I don't have reflux issues, and I'd rather practice eating healthy and indulging in moderation than having a surgery that will make me ill if I want a piece of cake on my birthday! But if I had reflux issues, I'd look into the bypass... As far as the amount of weight you lose, that all depends on how much work you're willing to put into it. With bypass, you have more of a chance of stretching your pouch and regaining weight than you do with the sleeve (the sleeve surgery removes most of the "stretchy" part of your stomach). Also, you WILL have to monitor yourself very regularly for vitamin/mineral deficiencies because of how your intestines are changed. People can stretch their stomach and regain their weight, but it's not possible to really reverse what you've done to your intestines. They remove the part that absorbs MOST of the nutrients in what you eat, and there's no getting that back. You could regain weight and still be very sick. There's pros and cons to all WLS. The more you know about them all, the better off you'll be in making this choice. Don't rush into it if you're unsure!! Good luck to you! -

The best way to sleep
makemyownluck replied to KayCTheNewMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only replying so that I can see what others suggest. When I had my gall bladder removed, I remember it took almost 2 weeks before I could lay in my bed again. I slept sitting up on the couch until then and I'm not looking forward to doing that again! -
Am I doomed? (Please say no!)
makemyownluck replied to Kellylynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Post op is a whole other ball of wax, my dear. Even if you don't eat exactly what you're supposed to, you won't be able to eat AS MUCH of it, so it will still help you. Also, for many, the desire to eat is gone post op. I'm hoping that's true for me!!
