August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?
@DomLorenVSG replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was so busy at work today all I had time for was a quick trip around the corner to Taco Bell. And of course one item wasn't enough, I had to add a few more things, and when I asked for a diet pepsi, I got a regular by accident. I didn't blink twice while devouring it all. An hour later, I feel like a giant fat failure. Lord knows I need to eat, but I hate how hungry I am, and how I'm a bottomless pit at times. The next 18 days could not go by fast enough. I'm tired of doing well in every other aspect of my life and feeling like a failure because of food!!!! :/ -

August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?
@DomLorenVSG replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So it turns out I'm missing my 10 year high school to get the sleeve instead. This is playing major head games with me, split between wanting to reunite with all my old friends, and wanting to hide under a rock embarrassed of what I look like. I guess that's what FB is for, so here's to a new me, and my 20 year reunion where I plan to have six pack abs. -
4 Months Out, Still Have A Lot To Lose But I Feel Awesome!
@DomLorenVSG replied to CindyGo1313's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm so glad you posted this today! I'm 3 weeks pre op and nervous I'm making a selfish decision because I'm a single mom of a 4 yr old, and the cost and recovery of this surgery is intimidating. I truly want to believe if I'm happy and healthy I will only be a better mom in the long run. Congrats and keep us updated! -
August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?
@DomLorenVSG replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Please add me to the FB group! I'm under Dominique Rabine I'm 28 in Auburn, AL I'm a single mom, grad student, full time worker bee. HT: 5'9 HW: 215 CW: 212 GL: 135 I'm getting sleeved by Dr. Alvarez August 17th. -
I'm covered via VA healthcare (I'm a Vet) which does NOT cover any bariatic surgery at all. And because I'm not morbidly obese (just obese with a BMI of 31.5) no doctor would even approve the surgery. After a friend when to mexico and had the vertical gastric sleeve with amazing success I decided to go down the same path. I got a loan to cover it, researched an American/Mexican dual certified doc (Dr. Alvarez) and I'm now going to finally get sleeved August 17th. The price is not cheap, however what I was quoted state side was absolutely astronomical. I was quoted for a sleeve $33k and $30k in Atlanta and Birmingham respectively. Going to mexico and having a dual certified physician do it, including hospital stay of 3 days, full testing, lab work, EVERYTHING was a total of $8,700. I got financing and decided that I did something about it. Good Luck in your journey.

5.5 Months And Not Much Lost
@DomLorenVSG replied to momof4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know someone who took a full 2 years to get to their goal weight. Her body fought it every step of the way. She had a terrible metabolism and maybe lost 1 lb every other week (2 to 3 lbs a month), but multiply 3 lbs per month over 24 month = 72 lbs ... So while time was slow the progress was there... It's not much comforting but it's hope. -
What's Up With Straws?
@DomLorenVSG replied to bethL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You gulp more air with straws, they are most harmful the first two weeks post op. if you do use them make sure to slip slow and have gas x on hand. -
August Sleevers?! Where Ya's At?
@DomLorenVSG replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a Mexico sleeves, but I wouldnt venture to say that a lot of us are in the same boat. My insurance won't cover it, and the doc state side who approved me also gave me a $30k quote... I had a friend have hers done in Mexico and just loved it, so I jumped on the band wagon when all my other options where non existent -
Just wanted to share my favorite site for figuring out my goal weight.... Www.mybodygallery.com

Making Your Final Goal
@DomLorenVSG replied to VACookey's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I found a website that realllly helps: www.mybodygallery.com The website lets you put in your height and body shape then it show you women at each weight class. I could see 10 women my height (5'9) and see what 140 lbs looks like compared to 165 lbs. it really opened my eyes and helped make my weight goals. My first, second, and third goals I made off of this site. Seeing the numbers applied to real women was sooooo helpful. -

Any Single Parents With Toddlers?
@DomLorenVSG replied to iceshayw's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm a single mom of a 4 year old and going to grad school nowhere near family. I have a very good friend here who was planning on helping by watching my son while i was gone for 5 days, but then his parents found out and now they've all chimed in to help me out. I would honestly ask some friends to help... If you can tell some friends you might be surprised on who might take him for a weekend while you recover. All else fails hire a babysitter for the first 48 (for after hours if your son is in daycare) and just have some one there for the first 2 or 3 days which are typically the hardest. Never easy, but always manageable! -
Bahahaha! Yes! And the worst part is, I've kept this surgery pretty private from the rest of the world and my FB friends and family, only a handful of people know about it, so while I want to scream it from the mountain tops, I can only truly celebrate it on here! But you know what? I love sharing this experience with people going through the same stuff as me, and who can appreciate 100x's more than people in my life who have no idea what I'm dealing with!

3 Weeks From Today And Counting!
@DomLorenVSG replied to LorenaVaca's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a mouth wash/spray (you can get it in either form) that helps produce siliva so you don't get dry mouth- very common in surgeries like this, especially the first two weeks were you have a hard time staying hydrated. Most people get severe "cotton mouth" symptoms until they are able to keep down more liquids. A handy idea like the gas x strips- more like a just in case, have on hand thing if you develop those symptoms. -
It Is Just So Hard To Believe..

Congrats! I hope I'm as blessed as you, and I will say your 20s will be a lot more enjoyable than mine! I waited til now (I'm 28) and I'm kicking myself in the butt for not doing this sooner! Can't wait to see your final results, good luck! -
3 Weeks From Today And Counting!
@DomLorenVSG replied to LorenaVaca's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same here! 3 weeks and 2 days for me! Sleepless nights, and lots of anxiousness! -
I'm just going to put my two cents in that my best friend had this done 2 years ago and she and I have done extensive research on both price and doctor qualifications. We researched their American board certified credentials, checked to make sure they are eligible to practice in both Mexico and the USA, we looked at patient complications, mortality rate, etc. Within those results we made our decision, she went to Dr. Aceves (spelling?) and I've chosen Dr. Alvarez. We both paid within a few hundred dollars of each other. I did the financing option, and she was able to secure a private lower interest loan. This surgery was quoted to me at $29000 and $33000 for Birmingham and Atlanta in the US
-
He does them in San Antonio, I don't know when, you can email his office and they will tell you, or you can view his YouTube videos and he has several patient documentaries as well.
-
I decided on Dr. Alvarez off of a personal reccomendation, I know he does seminars, but I really like all his YouTube videos as well. He has his office about 2 miles over the border but an American address as well for business transactions. My insurance denied me, so this was my only option financially. But I'm very confident and excited, best part no jumping through hoops with insurance diets and nonsense. I go there and it's a done deal!

Who Is Ready For College Football To Start Back
@DomLorenVSG replied to FloraBama Girl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
War Eagle! I'm an administrator and a PhD student here at Auburn and this week I purchased my full season tickets!!!! Yessssssss! Weagle Weagle War Damn Eagle! -
I have BCBS and VA coverage- NEITHER of them would approve my surgery because of my BMI only being 31. I'm actually in great shape, and an athlete but my weight has always been on the obese side, and now I have so many complicating factors it's gotten ridiculous. I've been on insulin meds, hormone meds, stomach ulcer meds, etc. I also have Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome which causes huge amount of weight gain and stomach issues at various points in the month. Every doctor I've consulted with have said this surgery will fix 99% of my problems, but NO insurance will cover this surgery because I'm not Morbidly Obese- so if I gained 30 more lbs and became full blown diabetic then they would pay... my logic is- why wait and torture my body, fix it now by a reputable doctor and save the last year of my 20's as not being miserably over weight. And maybe, just maybe I can get into the athletic shape of my life again and actually play my club sport like I use to 10 years ago minus all this extra baggage. :/ And yes, I'd love to be in the Alabama group- and of course and War Eagle!
