I'm almost to my 1st goal of 50lbs lost (banded 8/1, weight before pre-op diet was 381, currently at 336). I started going to gym to tone things and lose more weight. I haven't seen a personal trainer so I'm kinda making this up as I go. I'm going 3-4 times a week. I start with 30 minutes on the treadmill at 3 mph with an incline of 7. That gets me 1.5 miles. Then I hit the weight machines (all upper body stuff). Arms, chest, back, etc. I do two sets of 10 on each machine. And that is it. Is this an ok routine? suggestions? Thanks.

The trainer gave me two weights to hold to my chest and I leaned against the wall with one of those giant balls on my back. I had to make the motion to sit down and stand up. Did that 2x15. I've never felt my legs so worn in my life; not even after hitting the treadmill 4 times a week and using the leg press. He said that doing it this way, it uses all your muscles because part of it is also using them to remain in balance. The other exercise is similar to planking. You hold yourself horizontally (and straight) using your toes and elbows. Did it twice, holding it for 30 seconds at a time. Tonight I have my 1st full session.

Well, I had my session with the trainer yesterday. It was very educational. This trainer had a B.S. in Exercise science plus some other certifications. The first part was like a small class; lots of science involved in the program. Turns what I was doing is very inefficient. The focus of this program is metabolic resistance. A 25 minute workout yesterday burned almost twice as many calories as what I was doing using the treadmill and the weigh machines and that always took me over 1 hour for the complete workout. This trainer does not use the machines at all. I'm still having trouble walking. One of the exercises that I did, actually used all the muscles in my legs. The trainer said that cardio should not be a large part of your weight loss exercises (VERY inefficient). He said he only does it to keep his heart healthy. He doesn't do it that much. Its hard work but I'm looking forward to it.

I did used the biceps & lattissimus dorsi machines yesterday (no abs). I used the leg press and wow....I feel it today. I did 4x10 @ 100 lbs. I made an appointment with a personal trainer for tomorrow after work. The gym has a free assessment for members so we'll see what he says.

I guess I can try some leg exercises. I just have to find some that will not affect my treadmill use.

Yesterday's workout was only for anterior deltoids, pectoralis & triceps. I also upped the reps to 4 x 10. I also increased my cardio to 35 minutes (plus the 5 minute cooldown). That puts me at almost 2 miles. How accurate is the calorie meter in those machines? I put in my weight and age and according to it, my cardio workout burned almost 600 calories. Not sure how much you burn doing weights. Today, I'm going to use the machines that work on biceps & lattissimus dorsi. I will also look for a machine that does abs as well. I think I have routine that might work for me: Monday - anterior deltoids, pectoralis, triceps & cardio Tuesday - biceps, lattissimus dorsi, abs and cardio. Wedneday - off Thursday - anterior deltoids, pectoralis, triceps & cardio Friday - biceps, lattissimus dorsi, abs and cardio Weekends off. How does that look?

I do, I take it that's not the best way to do it? Also, I only lost 1 lb this week. Is it related to starting to do exercise?

Thanks! I tweaked it a bit tonight to add more reps. I also upped the speed to 3.1. I'm going to gradually increase it every to see what happens. Shoulder press (deltoids/triceps) 3 x 10 @65 lbs Shoulder press (anterior deltoids/pectoralis/triceps) 3 x 10 @65 lbs Triceps press (Triceps) 3 x 10 @70 lbs Pulldown (biceps/lattissimus dorsi) 3 x 10 @ 100 lbs Biceps curl (biceps) 3 x 10 @ 70 lbs Once I see a 2 as the 1st number in my weight, I will look at other fun alternatives for exercise but right now I'm focused and I want to keep it up. After last nights session at the gym, I wrote down what I'm doing. These are the 5 machines that I'm using. I also started doing the weights before I hit the treadmill. Shoulder press (deltoids/triceps) 2 x 10 @70 lbs Shoulder press (anterior deltoids/pectoralis/triceps) 2 x 10 @70 lbs Triceps press (Triceps) 3 x 10 @70 lbs Pulldown (biceps/lattissimus dorsi) 3 x 10 @ 100 lbs Biceps curl (biceps) 3 x 10 @ 70 lbs

I agree on the legs but carrying around almost 400lbs (I'm also 6'4") for years have left me with VERY muscular legs and thighs. Now that I've lost some weight, I can definitely see the muscles (specially my thighs). But I will keep an eye on them, I do not like chicken legs either.

Lee, I've committed to 4 days a week. M,T,Th & Fri. I'm still trying to figure the best weight for me. I will focus on lighter so I can go 2x15 at x lbs. I will definitely either bring a notepad or just use my phone to log the weights. Regards.

I had my last pre-op appointment on 07/19/12 and I weighed in at 381. That's when I started my diet for the surgery. I had my surgery on 08/01/12 and just went to the doctor yesterday (08/14). I weighed in at 353. That's 28 lbs!. So 28 down, 122 lbs to go until I reach my goal of 230. I already went down two pant sizes. I'm supposed to have my 1st fill appointment in two weeks but if I continue this way, I might not need it. With the band the way it is, I'm eating 1 cup of food per meal. I'm excited.

Thanks. I have my 1st fill appointment on 08/30. If I continue this way, I might not need a fill right away. -
Had My First Post-Op Appointment, Lost 28Lbs

I'm not really dieting, just eating a LOT less and I'm staying away from junk food. I was counting calories but my nutritionist told me yesterday that I should focus on portions instead of calories. I eat one cup of food total during meals. Sometimes I eat a Protein bar for lunch while at work. I always make sure at least half of my food is a protein. I'm still trying to find the right formula, guess its different for everybody. I forgot to ask if I was ok to exercise when I was at the doctor's so I will call them today to find out. -
I had it done this morning, still very sore and in pain. I brought my tablet to the hospital so i'll try to check in later
-
I'm on day 2, still very sore. Drinking little sips of crystal light and protein shakes. Still feel like crap.
-
I had about 3-4 hours of sleep last night. This morning, the hospital gave options instead of water. They gave me an Adkins vanilla shake, tea, broth, diet jello and apple juice. I was able to drink the apple juice, half the shake and one spoonful of jello. I'm stuffed. I also feel a lot of pressure, gas probably.

Its been about 12hrs since my surgery. I had hiccups for a few minutes but other than that, I haven't had any other issues. (besides the general pains of surgery). Been walking around the hospital floor and I haven't had any nausea. All they are giving me is ice. So far so good.
-
Thanks! The doctor wants to keep me overnight. Pain killers kicking, gotta go.

My doctor told me that my fills will be $50. $25 insurance co-pay for the visit and then he charges a $25 fee.

Is Anyone Else Scheduled For August?
El_Cid replied to justathing2me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did anybody get a blood thinner prescribed before the surgery? My doctor gave 7 syringes of a blood thinner (Fondaparinux Sodium). I used the 1st one today and everyday until Tuesday. He also prescribed liquid hydrocodone. -

I've noticed that watching TV is hard. Commercials and TV characters eating in a show...it kills me. -
Is Anyone Else Scheduled For August?

I'm scheduled for August the 1st. Been on the high protein/low carbohydrates diet and its rough. I drink two Premier Nutrition protein shakes (160 calories each). Only tried vanilla so far and its not bad; muscle milk did not taste good to me. When I get home, I have a small meal (meat and either a salad or vegetables). At night, I have a protein heavy snack if needed. I'm on day 5 so its not as bad but its still sucks.
