Dumping is not universal. Lots of folks (including myself) never, or very seldom, experience dumping. And many folks who do experience dumping do not have any vomiting. Light headedness, dizzyness, "the shakes", diarrhea - all possible symptoms of dumping. About 2/3 of folks who experience dumping get it 15 to 30 minutes following consumption of some foods - usually high in sugar or carbs. The other 1/3 don't experience the symptoms of dumping for one to three hours or more following eating. Not experiencing dumping is not uncommon at all and absolutely nothing to worry about. Your former stomach, now your pouch, has "stretch sensors" in it that signal the brain when it is full. But, you're not very far out yet and there is a lot of healing going on in there and likely still considerable swelling which reduces sensitivity of the nerves. Stay focused on following the protocol, especially the amounts, and you'll be fine. Before you know it, your pouch will start doing a lot of "talking" including "full". Drink as much Water as possible, one sip at a time. Walk as much as possible - start slow and increase as you feel more comfortable. The first couple of weeks following surgery are a little nerve wracking for everyone. You're going to be just fine and you're gonna love the new you!!

Two Opts In One! :(
DLCoggin replied to preshiz pink's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine taken out years ago and I can honestly say I haven't missed it! -
Amen to that! Bread and I don't get along at all. Hits the pouch as a big lump and just sits there! Not what I'd call painful but most uncomfortable.

Thank you so much for the kind words but I'm just one of many on this forum including yourself!

To be honest I don't know (not a beer drinker) but it's definitely carbonated. But you're only using maybe an ounce or so I don't think it will be a problem.

Put the salmon on a sheet of heavy duty foil. Pour a liberal amount of your favorite salsa over it (we like to make our own but Pace is quite good in a pinch as well). Add some thin sliced lemon slices and salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle a generous amount of fresh cilantro on top. Bring the long sides of the foil together and fold them together two or three times - you're making a "tent" to steam the salmon. Make similar folds on one end - your tent has to be air tight. Now add a splash of beer to the other end - the cheaper the better, it's only for moisture. And then seal the second end. Put it in an oven at 400 degrees and bake it for 20 to 30 minutes depending on how thick the salmon is. When it's done, open it carefully and put the salmon and the "sauce" in a bowl. Low cal, low fat, low carbs, super high in protein and absolutely delicious!!

Are You Telling Anyone? If So, Who? Why?
DLCoggin replied to worm2872's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolute, complete nonsense. Almost as ridiculous as arguing with your future mother-in-law would be! LOL -
Very common for doctors to have different ideas on many aspects of the care for their patients. Forum posts, blogs, articles - all may have the very best of intentions. But if you trust your doctor enough to go under his or her knife, you gotta trust them for post-op care as well. I would think twice (or ten times) before ignoring the advice of my doctor in favor of information from any of these other sources.

Eating At Family Events..?

"Life style changes" are more about control than denial and that's exactly what you did. You might find some useful ideas in my post "The Prime Directive". Congratulations and well done!! -
You'll know when you're full. Your pouch does a lot of "talking". Absolutely nothing to fear - just "listen" to your pouch and you'll be just fine. You can puree just about anything and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that many things are even more flavorful pureed than they are when they're whole. You're gonna love the new you!!

New Food For Post Ops...
DLCoggin replied to lovelygirl01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor never suggested a calorie limit either. 11g of protein is great. I have an Excel spreadsheet that has almost 100 grocery store, frozen, and fast food items that are all high in protein (and I'm adding to it all the time). Forum rules don't allow me to post it but I'd be glad to email it to you if post your email address or PM it to me. I've sent it to dozens of folks here on the forum. One of the biggest (and best) surprises I've had following my RNY has been the number of delicious, high protein options there are out there!! -
Salmon is loaded with omega-3. As long as you don't fry it, bread it, or load it up with sugary marinades, fish is fabulous and loaded with protein! Shrimp, scallops, tilapia, steelhead, trout, catfish, crab, cod, tuna - if it lives in water and it's not moving, I eat it!

Not Sure How I Feel About This
DLCoggin replied to Beachbum's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dumping is not universal and vomiting is only one of the possible symptoms. I was seven months out before I had an occurence of dumping (from eating some red grapes) and I have never had any vomiting. Light headedness, dizzyness, "the shakes", diarrhea - all possible symptoms of dumping. More importantly, RNY is about much, much more than dumping. You'll be just fine and you're gonna love the new you!! -
Welcome to the family! You're gonna love the new you! And please give your husband my sincere thanks from a grateful American!

Scared Of Missing Food
DLCoggin replied to kpaige77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"Life style changes" is more about control than denial. In the long run, the number of foods that you can never have again is really quite small, if any. What I found quite surprising is that you really can be absolutely satisfied with a bite or two. Amazing. You might find some good guidelines in my post "The Prime Directive". You're gonna love the new you!! -
Milk of mag comes in flavored and unflavored versions. Bought the unflavored by mistake one time - not a good idea! LOL! GasX is also good. Everyone is different but it passes relatively quickly - not the gas, but the pain. A preponderance of gas seems to be the price of admission to the big losers club!

I focus on protein, calories, protein, protein, and then of course protein. If you do that, the fat and sugar will pretty much take care of themselves.
