    Being Judged?!

Obesity is a progressive, life-threatening disease that is the number two cause of preventable death in the U.S. When considering treatment options for any life-threatening disease, the question is not how easy or hard any given option is. The question is what is the most effective option with the greatest chance of successfully resolving the disease. Gastric bypass surgery is the single most effective treatment known to medical science for the treatment of obesity and more than 30 co-morbidities associated with obesity - by a very wide margin. Its success rate, safety and effectiveness are supported by more than 30 years of clinical studies involving tens of thousands of patients from all over the world. And for those who qualify, it is endorsed by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Institute of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization, the U.S. food and Drug Administration, and many, many other highly respected universities and organizations. The decision to have surgery, any surgery, is an intensely personal one that should involve careful consideration of many factors. Negative comments from those who are foolish enough, ignorant enough, or just plain egotistical enough to believe they have the knowledge and expertise to voice an opinion about something as complex as bariatric surgery is the height of absurdity. Most certainly not a factor worthy of consideration in making such an important, potentially life-changing decision.
  10. I think we all know that with a few mouse clicks we can get tons of "advice" from doctors and researchers regarding food diaries/log/journals. But the folks on our forum are the real deal. We're on the front lines! We're living this post-op challenge. Every day. It's your thoughts, your advice and your experiences that I believe we can all learn and benefit from. There's no right or wrong answer. So how about it... If you use one, why? How long have you used it? What are the advantages? Disadvantages? How important is it to your weight loss? Do you think you'll continue to use it after your reach your goal weight? What advice would you give to those considering a food diary? If you don't use one, why? Have you ever used one? What are the advantages of not using one? Disadvantages? Do you believe using one would have any effect on your weight loss journey, positive or negative? What advice would you give to those considering a food diary?

    Oikos Greek Yogurt

My wife and I both love the Oikos! Probably not a good idea until your weight loss has stabilized a little (because of the carbs) but after that if you like Greek yogurt it's the best one we've found.

  21. It does make us mere mortals wonder. But I think we have to remember that on the forums we see only pieces of any given doctor's post-op protocol, in this case the protein requirement. Doctors on the other hand see the whole program and make their recommendations on all aspects of post-op care as well as their own personal experience regarding what works and what doesn't. I reckon if we trust our doctors enough to allow them to do their surgery, we have to trust their judgment regarding post-op care as well. There doesn't seem to be any general pattern that would indicate one protein requirement is more or less successful than another.
  22. Coming up on 19 months post-op. Requirement is 100g a day. 35g protein shake (Pure Protein) every day for breakfast. Chicken, fish, turkey, low-fat cheese, yogurt - all excellent sources of protein. There are also tons of grocery store foods that are surprisingly high in protein and low in fats and carbs. Getting in the habit of reading labels helped me tremendously in identifying all kinds of good ones. You have to hunt a little but the gems are there!

    No One In The Sixties?

I think there are a number of folks on the forum (myself included) who would very much appreciate hearing your story about winning the battle with your insurance company after two denials. Please share the reasons for the initial denials and what changed that ultimately led to your success. And by the way - congratulations! You're gonna love the new you!!
