    Finding Your Bariatric Brain Again

    Terrific article!!
  2. Imagine for a moment that someone handed you a plan. Their promise - "If you follow this plan for twelve to eighteen months, it will change your life." Not maybe. Not possibly. It will, beyond any shadow of a doubt, change your life. The laws of science and the universe simply cannot be denied. That was the basis of my decision to have RNY. I had done endless research. I read everything I could find. Without exception, the most prestigious medical organizations in the world all said the same thing - follow this plan and in the absence of rare and unpredictable complications, you cannot fail. The science is irrefutable. The science is conclusive. The results are well documented. This line of thinking does three things: It gives you a tremendous boost in your confidence that you are making the right decision. It places the responsibility for success (or failure) squarely on your shoulders. It forces you to examine the strength of your commitment. How bad do you want it? When you believe, truly believe, if I follow my plan I cannot fail, there are very few challenges that cannot be overcome. When you want it bad enough, failure is not an option. I followed my plan. And it changed my life. Follow your plan. And it will change yours. You're gonna love the new you!

PPI's, ulcers and old stomach questions

I am a vet but most certainly not a doctor. That said, it is my understanding that your stomach produces acids in response to the presence of food. It is also my understanding that most acid is produced in the upper part of stomach (the fundus) which is used to form the pouch. Since your "stomach" (as opposed to your pouch) no longer receives food, and the majority of stomach acid is produced in that part of the stomach used to create the pouch, I suspect that acid production in the stomach would be dramatically reduced if not eliminated. I'll be three years out in October and have had no problem. There are others who had RNY twenty years ago or more. I have never read of anyone having a problem with ulcers in the "stomach". I have done and continue to do a considerable amount of research. I've never read or even heard of a clinical study focused on ulcers in the "stomach" following RNY. That does not mean it never happens, but I suspect it is rare. Ulcers at the anastomosis of the pouch are fairly common following RNY (about 15%). I developed one about six months post-op. My surgeon doubled my Rx for Prevacid and 90 days later a second endoscopy confirmed the ulcer was completely healed. There was no other treatment prescribed or needed. Just the change from one pill to two and it took care of it. Your question is an interesting one and I think many of us would be interested in what your doctor's response is when you have the opportunity to discuss it.

    Obesity Activism

There is help out there for folks who have been denied insurance coverage for bariatric surgery (or want to do everything possible to avoid the denial in the first place) - http://wlsappeals.com/ . I do not have any first hand experience with these folks but would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience. Under the ACA, many states have chosen not to cover bariatric surgery under their plan offerings. Sadly that includes many of the states that have some of the highest rates of obesity in the country. Bravo to this young lady for speaking out. She deserves our support as do all of the victims of the disease of obesity - which let us not forget includes their friends and loved ones.
