There really isn't a pouch shrinking diet. Well, there is but not for bypass folks, it's for banded folks. If a bypass person stretches their pouch and/or stoma they are history, they can only try various surgical techniques to tighten it up that do not work. If a banded person dilates their pouch they can have an unfill and go on liquids for a few weeks and usually that will take care of it. If it does not go back into position well enough then they are looking at surgical correction. The 5DPT is to get you back on track when you are binging on carbs and assorted high calorie foods.

I had no sweet spot either. I was either able to eat absolutely anything and in any quantity or I was obstructed. It seemed like there was no middle ground. I spent 95% of my banded life under filled or unfilled. I just white knuckled it. That's why I changed the the sleeve, it's MUCH easier.

That's a five day pouch test, it was designed for bypass folks that have indeed stretched out the fundus and stoma of their stomachs with food and soda. But that is a different portion of the stomach than banded people and once it is stretched, it's stretched. There is no going back for a bypass patient. The 5DPT is designed to get any WLS person back on track. Low carb Protein liquids x2 days, soft Proteins x2 days, and hard proteins for 1 day.

HAHAHAHA! I LOL in real time after reading the above! Many many years ago I saw her speak in Phoenix and I wasn't impressed. I was working for a company that was doing some TV advertising and as a thank you for our business they offered me Oprah tickets. I declined them at first but then a friend really wanted to go. Suffice it to say, she was no longer an Oprah fan after that. It was supposed to be a discussion about lots of general topics, it turned out to be a sermon on religious topics and the bible.

Lap band slipped. Will my insurance now cover surgery in the states?
WASaBubbleButt replied to laonanny's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Probably not, if they don't cover bariatric procedures you are probably looking at going back to MX. Are you sure you need surgical correction? Did they unfill your band and put you on liquids for a few weeks? That usually fixes a slip. -
I'd venture a guess that most banded folks can't eat bread. But you know, it's okay. White carbs are what got us fat to begin with so not eating them is okay. However, problems swallowing... as in esophageal problems or problems keeping bread down? Are you referring to two different issues or one?

You know, it isn't like the woman can't afford to verify her stories first. I agree, an idiot.

The longer term the band use, the more likely the complications?
WASaBubbleButt replied to PamFP's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm going to be really honest here. My experience on various band boards is that those who had surgery: 0-6 months ago are in love with their band and in love with their doctor. 6-12 months ago are in love with their band. They figured out they are doing all the work so they like their doc but love their band. 12-18 months ago they are having band problems but the scale is moving so they can put up with it. 18-24 months they are sick of the problems and considering revision. Check out any thread where a newbie asks if people would do it again. You can predict what the outcome will be. Comments such as, "I had my band place 2 months ago and I'm down 30#!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my band!!!" You can't really get a good idea of how people will love their band until they have had it for a year or two. Those are the people to listen to when researching because all newbies love the initial weight loss. My band did a great job regarding weight loss but I paid dearly for each pound. A sleeve is easier and better weight loss with fewer long term risks and complications. -
Yep, it's a big problem. Just because you can eat solids doesn't mean you should. The post op diet has little to do with swelling and a great deal to do with scarring and the band setting into place. You are risking a slip a year down the road.
-
The actual surgical procedure for a band is safer, the sleeve has a slightly larger potential complication factor. But long term, the sleeve is safer for future potential risks and complications. It's a trade off, six of one, half dozen of another.

This thread is going to be sooo inappropriate!

I've had such a crappy diet the whole time I was banded that I'm making up for lost time. I have a LOT of joint pain, more than I should for my age. I'm using the vit D. If I can find any omega fatty acids I'll send them. In the meantime, if you want to try a quality Protein product or two, I'm happy to send them to you. Wayyyy better than that test tube crap you are consuming. ;o) Isopuke, Matrix 5.0, EAS, and Whey Gourmet have their raw materials tested by a 3rd party to ensure the quality of their protein. Most companies do not do this and their protein quality varies from month to month. -

There is NO way I could get 100gms of protein in daily unless I used supplements. whey Gourmet Choco-Peanut butter... the stuff is fantastic. Want any samples? If so, email me your mailing address. I'm going to the PO tomorrow. I mix it with Water and it is thick, rich, and creamy. Good stuff, 23gms protein, 120 cal, 3gms carbs. Fantastic stuff. -

HAHA! I have a HUGE cupboard full of vitamins, Protein supplements, and other various supplements. At the time I bought them I swore I would use them. Yeah, right. I need to clean out the expired stuff someday. -

I thought the DS sleeve was larger than the VSG? No? I was never sure about that one, I always meant to ask but it's hard finding a rational DS person on OH. -

It's certainly nothing I would be compliant with. They are malabsorbing so they have to take this stuff. I would never cut it as a bypass patient either, I just don't remember to take the silly pills. Freaky. -

Okay, I know I should leave the DSers and their "odor" alone but I just read this. Now, keep in mind a few months ago one of them actually told me that DS makes you turn bad food into good food. Riiiiiiight, if that is the case, why do they need vitamins such as this daily list: Vitamin Regimen: List yours, please! Or, this one: I struggle to remember my multivitamin daily. No way would I be compliant with this. -
The only way to tell if you have dilated your pouch is by a fluoro exam. If you did stretch it then usually they will do an unfill and a majority of the time it will go back into position. You'll be on liquids during this time, doctors suggest anything from 2-6 weeks of liquids and an unfill. The majority of the time it will go back into position. If not you might need surgery. It's treated very similar to a slip. If you have dilated your pouch then keep in mind it will be easier to do a 2nd time. But the reality is that you don't know if that is the case or not and the only way to find out is a barium swallow (fluoro).

You make the time to get to the gym, you walk in the snow, you do anything it takes to keep plugging away. You don't have to believe it is going to work for it to work, you just have to get out there and do it. Take your kids roller skating or roller blading and join them, take them to the gym with you, take a friend with you, have your husband watch the kids and go to the gym, or a neighbor, a friend. Find the time, make yourself go.

Dr. Gonzalez Support Thread
WASaBubbleButt replied to Newblew's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Funny how that works. I guess they are busy. ;o) Good job on doing your research. Dr. G has a history of patients posing as multiple IDs. Be very careful, do your research well. -
How many calories do you eat daily to lose weight?
WASaBubbleButt replied to littlefroggy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I was losing I kept them at 600 daily and did a lot of exercise. Today I don't really count them. I probably consume about 1200-1500 daily for maintenance. I never had a true plateau during weight loss. -
Are you referring to the old food in your intestines for 10+ years as commercials claim? Talk to ANY GI surgeon, they've never seen such a thing. They look in colons and intestines daily for a living and they say the claims of needing a colon flush are nothing short of expensive snake oil. It's a waste of money and they will take a lot of it, btw. Also, all it is going to do is mess with your electrolytes. They are not safe, they are not effective, and they are not necessary.
