Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Hi April bandster friends! I had a pre-op appt today with my band dr! YAY ME!!!! I lost 9 pounds since my last appt with him (1/17/07) so NO "pre-op" diet for me! I'm SO thankful! (and very sorry for those who have to do it!) They gave me an "optional" liquid diet 24 hours before surgery but said it was totally optional. I dunno about you but I think I'll "opt" NOT to do that! They said no binging - I can handle that - but I will take it easy and continue with the high protein, very low carb, lots of veggies and 1 - 2 oranges a day diet that I've been doing. I started it about 2 weeks ago and that's how I lost the 9 pounds. Before that, I wasn't doing anything to lose but it sank in that my pre-op appt was coming and I had better do something fast or else they'll put me on the liquid pre-op diet! Anyway - things are looking good for 4/5/07 band date. I have a pre-op appt on 4/3/07 at the hospital to meet with the anesthesiologist and post-op nurse. Good luck to everyone!!!! Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Hi April bandster friends! I'm just about there! Band date is next Thursday April 5th. I have a pre-op appt this Wednesday March 28. Hang in there everyone! I'm finding that in the wee hours of the morning, I'm awake and getting nervous about the surgery. Things like how am I going to deal with not lifting my 2 year old! (he will be 2 on March 29)...oh yeah, and we have a puppy! 11 week old yellow lab who is in the throws of housebreaking! I have 2 other kids as well, a 6 year old and a 4 1/2 year old. Anyone know how LONG until you can drive and then how long until you can lift after surgery? My hubby will be taking the entire week after my sugery off work so I know that will help tremendously! Excited but nervous too! Bandedme (almost!) 4/5/07

    Stomach Hernia

Thanks Kat! My doc definitely knows - but I will make double sure when I go in next week for my pre-op appt. I'm glad to hear your SIL hasn't had anything out of the ordinary with the hernia and band!!!! Do you know if the hernia causes and concern with the band? Like - does the band get placed in a different position - bigger or smaller pouch left above the band? I actually saw the hernia during the upper GI series - it appeared to my very untrained eye that my hernia was "behind" the stomach - I couldn't not see the diaphram - looking at the picture above that someone linked, my hernia looked to be on the side of my stomach, not on the upper portion. But, like I said - my untrained eye - and I haven't talked to my dr about it yet. So, I'll hope for the best! Thanks again! Bandedme

    Stomach Hernia

Charsweb - WOW! Just YESTERDAY you and surgery and you're already on the computer! GOOD FOR YOU!!!! Please - let me all about it?! How was it? You mentioned more pain and more swelling - how are you doing? Can you "feel" the hernia repair at all? Did your dr say anything about requiring more healing time or anything different than regular band surgery/healing time since you had the hernia? Did he say WHY or HOW you got the hernia??? So many questions! Sorry - you're just the first that I know that has had both - hernia and band - Take care and please email or post! GOOD LUCK to you!!! Bandedme 4/5/07

Hi Michelle - I have some slimfast and carnation instant breakfast shakes in the refrigerator. I have tried them. To be honest - I REALLY hoped I could drink them but they make me feel sick. I cannot have splenda - does horrible things to my intestines and gives me headaches. I don't know if those shakes have splenda or sucralose in them. Are there any other protein shakes out there? I was thinking of going to GNC today. Bandedme

Jennifur- Re: unlimited fresh green veggies - does that include fresh steamed broccoli and green beans? (I know no peas = b/c high carbs) What about crystal lite? Is that ok? Thank you for your help! Bandedme

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Jennifur - Question - will doing this diet that you outlined below get weight off in just 2 weeks? My surgery is 4/5/07 and I have a pre-op consult with my dr on 3/28/07. I've lost just 6 pounds since 1/17/07 and MUST GET SERIOUS about it FAST! My doc didn't say how much to lose before surgery, just that it was "recommended that I lose some." What the heck does that mean?! I do know, however, that he WILL NOT do the surgery if someone GAINS weight! I'm freaking! What if the docs scale weights heavier than mine at home?! I was just at my ob/gyn for a physical last week and was 256 (my band docs scale weighed me at 262 on 1/17/07).....but I know all scales weigh differently!!!! I'm thinking that I will definitely take my shoes OFF when I get weighed for the pre-op appt!!!!! NEED HELP and ADVICE!!!! I am really NOT much of a breakfast eater, but can do a strawberry la creme yogurt. The thought of a chicken breast in the morning.....ugh! (ick!) Is that that time to have an orange? I'm not crazy about oranges either - BUT WILL DO WHATEVER it takes for the next 2 weeks to "get it done!!!" Thanks ladies! Bandedme (4/5/07) unlimited grilled boneless, skinless chicken breast, no salt unlimited fresh green vegies, celery, lettuce, cucumbers - 3 small/med oranges a day make sure to drink Water

THANK YOU KAT!!!! I took notes!! (smiles!) I have done Atkins before, and south beach, etc etc etc - just have been away from it for some time and didn't know the ins and outs - but thank you! I will start this today! Since doing SB, I haven't had rice, breads, etc much - and I don't mind eliminating them for good! Thanks again! I appreciate your quick response! And you are right - killer breath - I remember that! ugh! oh well, that is a painless side effect that can be managed! Take care! Bandedme 4/5/07 262/258/150

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Hi there! I'm not on any special diet before surgery, but my doc said it would be helpful to lose some weight before surgery (4/5/07). I do know that he will not do the surgery if a patient gains any weight before surgery. I have a pre-op appt 3/28/07. Can anyone give me the quick in's and out's of a high protein diet or something I should be doing NOW before the 3/28/07 appt? I do not want my surgery postponed!!!! HELP! Thanks! Bandedme BMI 41

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

WOW! Thanks for the encouragement, Betty! A Band grad! How nice to hear from you! I am scheduled for 4/5/07!!! I can't beleive it is literally right around the corner....here before we know it! I've kind of been intentionally "forgetting" what day it is and how much more to go before surgery. It has helped the days go by much faster (although I'm still thinking about it, just not obsessing ).....we just got a new puppy too! Scout - he will be 9 weeks old tomorrow - a yellow lab - SO CUTE! That helps tick the time by too (he and our 3 young kids - ages 6, 4 1/2, and 2 at the end of this month). I have a pre-op appt on March 28. Not sure if I'm going to get the liquid diet instructions then or not. I hope not! But if so, then it's for a good reason and only a week before surgery. I keep telling myself but tomorrow I AM going to do it - I AM GOING TO THE GYM TOMORROW!!!!! Take care everyone! April will be here soon! Bandedme (almost! HA!) 4/5/07

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Hi everyone! So does the idea of a liquid diet sound gross to anyone? I'm ok with it AFTER surgery since I know I'll be healing and everything will be different, etc. but the thought of it now just does not sound very appealing. Some say they are on a liquid diet pre-surgery. What is that like? Isn't there a lot of hunger and feeling deprived, like you could naugh on the kitchen table if no one was looking (lol). really - I feel that I'm ready for this most of the time, but find myself wondering what it will really be like, especially when it comes time for grocery shopping or thinking about how I'm going to still be the meal planner, cook, etc for my hubby and 3 kids (ages 6, 4 1/2 and almost 2). Ideas anyone? Bandedme

Count me in for the April banders board! My date is 4/5/07! It's just around the corner! AAAHHHH!!! Less than a month away! Excited and nervous about it! Today, I really stepped up on eating less and healthier. I don't have a pre-op diet to follow although my doc suggested that I lose some weight prior to surgery. Just need to get the actual exercise in. although doesn't picking up after 3 young kids all day and running around the house count for something?! Any advice out there? Thanks! Bandedme (almost! lol)

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Hello! I am very new to this message board. I've been reading around the board and have finally found a place where I fit in! I have a lapband date of 4/5/07 - YAY! My journey has been really fast - I started the process January 10, 2007, went through 8 pre-op clearance appointments (nutritionist, psych, bloodwork, upper GI series, ultrasound, chest xray, pulmonologist and cardiologist) and then I was approved by my ins in just 2 days after my band dr submitted the package! YAY! So it took about 6 weeks to get through all of that. The April surgery date was my doing - the dr had openings in March, but I needed to push the surgery to April because of my husband's work schedule, etc so April 5th it is! I have a pre-op/results appt with my band surgeon on March 28 - just a week before the surgery. I am not on any "pre-op diet" ....should I be? The dr recommended that I try to lose some weight before the surgery, but didn't have specific guildlines or requirements, etc. I've cut WAY back on the "junk" but haven't eliminated it - same for fast foods, desserts, etc. I've lost just a few pounds, but nothing major. Should I be REALLY trying to slim down before the surgery date? I keep telling myself, "ok - today, I'm going to exercise, today, I'm going to go walking, etc." and to be honest it hasn't happened yet. I have 3 young kids (ages 6, 4 1/2 and my youngest will be 2 this month) and keeping up with them is just exhausting let alone trying to squeeze in official exercise time! BUT - I know I'm GOING to have to exercise after surgery so I better get started before! Any suggestions, ideas, please help! Thanks!!! Bandedme (well, almost - April 5, 2007) BMI 41.1, weight at first consult = 262, current weight 258 (goal = 155)

    on my way

Hello! Congrats to all on your successes! I am scheduled for lapband surgery on 4/5/07 in Raleigh by Dr. Moran. What is the "pre-op" diet? I don't know about that - yet. All my testing is done. I have a results/pre-op appt scheduled for 3/28/07. Doc said it would be helpful if I could lose a little weight before the surgery, start walking, etc. Anything I should know? Thanks!

Hi there! I saw your post about finding a dr in the Raleigh, NC area. I have been going to Dr. Moran. His office website is: www.alasurgery.com He has weekly weight loss seminars on Wednesdays and a support group meeting the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm. It's great - he and his nurse run the support group meetings. So if you have questions, he's right there to answer. They also have speakers. I am scheduled for lap band surgery 4/5/07. Take care!
