Growing up, I was normal size and didn't really have issues with weight. I was always very active and just ate whatever tasted good. I grew up in a pretty disfunctional family and in my early teens started to develop body image issues. This turned into emotional eating and thinking I was fat, even though I wasn't...In my early twenties I got a 'grown-up' desk job and pretty much stopped exercising. I also had a bad break-up and that is when things sort of fell apart. I just got depressed and really just ate, worked, went home and slept. As you can imagine, the pounds just started packing on. By the time I was about 23, I was a size 16-18 (up from about a 6-8). Once I was overweight, it just seemed really difficult to make time to exercise and to think about eating right. I have done just about every fad diet known to man and have joined about as many gyms. I've gone up and down and have never been able to maintain. In 2002, I met my husband at work and we got married on 2004. Our first daughter was born in 2005 and our youngest came in 2007. This past year, my doctor diagnosed me with depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and she told me that I was at very high risk of developing diabetes since both my parents have it and I'm overweight. Well, I decided enough was enough and started looking into WLS. I needed something that was going to help me achieve permanent weight loss and I ended up chosing the VSG. I had my surgery on May 3rd and it's definitely been an adjustment, but I'm really looking forward to getting to my goal weight and staying there. I want to be able to run around with my kids and have an active role in their lives. I don't want them to look back on their childhoods and only remember Mommy on the couch in front of the TV. They deserve better than that and so do my husband and I. I'm so blessed to have found a wonderful group of doctors and to have such a great support system at home! Since my pre-op diet started about 6 weeks ago, I have lost a total of 21 pounds which just blows my mind! I have been able to get off my anti-depressants and my blood pressure pills. I feel like a teenager again and can't wait to see where all of this takes me!
