  1. I am almost 5 days out and very glad I am taking 2 weeks off because I am still not myself and I have a very stressful and demanding job. I had a coworker that took 2 weeks off and she was glad she did so that is what I asked for. We have nothing like light duty so when I go back I have to be really ready. I know they say you can have surgery friday and return to work Monday I just don't see how people do it! Good luck to you and happy healing :-)

  2. Someone mentioned scrambled eggs and it reminded me of my Surgeon's Patient advocate. She told us right before surgery that scrambled eggs aren't on our mushy list because 9 out of 10 banders can't have them. She said hard boiled, poached, over easy, etc...yes, but for some reason the consistency of scrambled gets stuck. That made me sad!

  3. Did the surgery with hernia repair take longer than the regular surgery? About how long were you guys out for? Everynow and then I get chest pain and there is also a sharp pain I get when I get into my car (it is low). I just want to be prepared if it turns out that is the case. Also, I am paying cash for my surgery... does the insurance cover that part if they have to do it?

Yes, I was a cash paying patient and insurance will cover it since it was needed and if we had discovered it they would have payed for it anyway.

  4. I am on day three and looking forward to having a Protein shake today:) First two days were filled with Vitamin Water Zero and Won-Ton Soup broth. Oh' date=' and I did get down a sugar free popsicle. Tummy is grumbling, but I think they gas has a lt to do with it. When I eat/drink even a little bit, I feel stuffed so I stop. Honestly just ready for my stomach to not be so sore. I am sleeping good at all and only feel good when I am sitting up with pillows behind my back in our living room chair. Hoping every day gets a little easier......:)[/quote']

That's funny I was hungrier on day 1 than I am now and I am also 3 days out (june 14th). I started Protein shakes the next day so maybe that's why I am not hungry now. I went on an adventure yesterday and took my daughter to the airport...went wayyyyy too long without meds or food and was so cramped up in my shoulders when I got home I couldn't lay down. I guess eveyones different and docs will tell us different things but always listen to your body!

  5. I had the best (not to mention cutest) anesthesiologist for lap band. I have had bad experiences during childbirth and for dental surgery where I have had delayed reactions to anestesia. After being awake for dental surgery I was knocked out cold on the way home. I voiced my concerns and so he said "so you want me to make sure you are really out before we start?" I said YES PLEASE! On the way to o.r. he asked how about a cocktail? I was woozy moving over to the table and bam....that was it. Next thing I knew I was in recovery with my sweet little nurse holding my hand!

  6. I had a haital hernia repaired at the same time I was banded and I don't think it made any difference in my level of pain or my recovery. I was all over sore for a few days (gas pain) and had port pain for a few weeks which I've heard was normal. One thing I have noticed since my surgery is I haven't had heartburn once since it was done and it doesn't matter what I eat. I never realized how bad my heartburn was until it stopped.

Nausea seems to be a common side effect from surgery. Hope this helps.

    j~

I am lucky because I never really had heart burn (except with pregnancies); however, I really think that excercise will be easier after recovery because I often had sharp pains in the center of my chest that could never be explained.

  7. I don't know if it makes it harder' date=' I just know with my experience, that I have horrible nausea. But I don't know if it's due to the hernia repair or just the band surgery.[/quote']

Right, it is hard to distinguish what's what. I don't think its the gas anymore because the pain in my shoulders is gone...just in the center of my chest now and sore around my incisions

  8. Just wondering if anyone else can give me feedback on doing both of these at the same time. I am having pain still in the center of my chest and wondering if its from the repair because I think most of the gas is gone now. When I signed the consent to have it repaired if he found one I didn't think twice because I was sure I didn't have one. It just seems a little close to where the band is placed though...

  9. Where did you have it done? I'm at Beth Israel in Boston' date='MA. I guess all drs are different. I'm not too impressed with the hospital at this moment, they asked me to bring my cpap machine and here it is 10:30 and respiratory hasn't even hooked it up yet.

    [/quote']

I am a respiratory therapist and just wondering if you needing a cpap machine is why they are keeping you overnight. Most all places do an outpatient surgery if its laprascopic. I would think you would be at higher risk, I also can't imagine are being blown into at this point (just had mine today). Unfortunately the air goes to your lungs with cpap but some will always inadvertanly go to your belly, yikes!

  10. I found a heat pad very helpful and some sugar free candy/sweets etc to suck on if u are allowed :)

I am a little concerned that u say u will set up 'camp' in your room .. to be honest u need to start moving arolund as soon as u are able to, this not only helps with the gas but also prevents things like DVT from forming, so walking to the bathroom is a good thing :)

Some people return to work within the week some dont feel like it but we all recover at different rates so just do what u can as often as possible !

Thanks for replying and I know I will be moving around soon after, but so many people said that they slept so much for the first 2-3 days after I guess that's what I meant. I guess having things at bedside (other than meds and water) doesn't make much since anyway that way it will force me to get up and move!

  11. Hey all!

Just have a question for those already banded. I am going shopping tomorrow for my post-surgery needs. I already have gas-ex (because everyone swears by it), but what other things made you more comfy after surgery? I will most likely set up camp in my room to be close to the bathroom. My bed sits high so not sure if thats a good thing or not. Please give me your thoughts on what worked and what didn't!

    Thanks!
