    Alcohol

I took a sip of my wife's wine while out a dinner with friends. I felt the burn from my throat to my sleeve and have not tried again. I would speak to your doctor or nutritionist for advice.
  2. I said the same thing on another thread where someone was regretting surgery because she could not head huge amounts of unhealthy food. Most of us had to go through one visit to a psychologist to get our psych clearance. Personally I do not feel that is sufficient. I went through several months to deal with my guilt and feelings of failure for making the decision to have surgery and dealing with food issues. I come from a southern family and my wife's family is from the Caribbean, and both cultures cultures have a heavy focus on food. I needed to learn that going out socially does not mean I have to consume huge amounts of good and alcohol to be social. I also did not have to clean my plate to show I enjoyed the meal as I had been taught growing up. I would highly suggest anyone serious about the surgery go through a few sessions of therapy to come to grips with our unhealthy obsession with food.
  3. I had some second thoughts while waiting to get approved, it took me 18 months of fighting with my insurance company. I also had a little after I finally got approved. My brother in law had a bypass while I was waiting so he prepared me for what I would have to deal with from the pre-op diet to post-op issues. I heard of people starting the pre-op diet and then canceling their surgery. Once I got that far along in the process, there was no turning back for me.
  4. It is good to see that I am not the only person who doesn't feel as if I have to tell everyone about my surgery. It should be my choice and no one else. My brother in law told everyone and some were very supportive. Others watch everything he eats at work meetings and some have made stupid remarks like "should you really have that considering you had bypass surgery".
  5. I don't see the tab at the very bottom of the homepage either. Am I missing something?
  6. To those on the fence, as with any surgery there are risks associated, and I have had four major operations in five years. WLS is no different from any other major surgeries I have had and have recovered from or are recovering from currently. I have read multiple posts on this forum and have never said anything mean, but need to now have my say. For the people who have had complications, bad eating habits and have received bad advice, maybe a better surgeon, nutritionist, and support group in a WLS center of excellence may have greatly diminished those risks. Whether you have great insurance as I or are self pay, research is the key your weight loss experience. For those of you who have regrets because you can't eat the same quantity of food as pre-op, I think some additional sessions with a psychotherapist might be in order. Isn't eating in an uncontrolled manner, the reason we all needed surgery in the first place and are/were all classified as morbidly obese. We are all suppose to meet with a therapist for the psych part of our pre-op clearances. I did this and had additional sessions to come to grip with my decision to have surgery, deal with the food issues which led me to be over 300 pounds, and my feelings of failure for having to have the procedure. Speak to your respective surgeon's office to get a referral to a good support group or psychologist to help deal with your food issues otherwise you can not and will not succeed post-op. At that point the failure will not be your surgeon or nutritionist, it will be yours. I regret not doing this in my 20s, 30s, or 40s, I did this at 51. I do not regret that I can't eat huge quantities of food or will not have to shop at a big and tall or buy anything that is a size 2X or larger much longer. I regret having cheated my wife and family of doing some of the activities other husbands and fathers did like going to the beach and going on rides at the amusement park and not getting winded quickly playing softball with my son. I had this surgery for me and to be healthy for my family and others should do the same and not let the negatives keep them from a life change. I have nothing against free speech that is our right, but why discourage someone else who wants a change because of your individual hang ups. Yes, this is an forum to share our thoughts, views and experience but let's be supportive and help people on the fence who need some assistance and support. Not all people on this forum have supportive spouses, children or other love ones. This forum helped me make the decision to get the sleeve over the band. It was the people on this forum who gave me kind words when I hit a stall or did not lose as much weight as I thought I should have. I was sleeved on 2/19 and am now some 42lbs light and getting smaller. Speak you mind but get over your respective mental issues before you discourage others. Sorry for the long message but this is my 2 cents for all who care.

So Who's The Fat Girl Now?!

It's definitely not you. You look great.
  8. I have to take the capsules twice a day. I have had no issues swallowing them. My wife has an issue swallowing pills and use a spoon full of honey or applesauce to get them down.
  9. I told no one other than my immediate family. I had neurosurgery a few months ago for which I am still in recovery. Anytime I go out to dinner on a social basis, I only order an appetizer for myself or a few for the table. Friends have noticed the weight loss but chalk it up to my eating much lighter as a result of my extensive surgery.
  10. I did the same and was constantly reading about the experiences of others prior to my surgery. The good thing for me was my wife was doing the same. We would compare notes each evening on the various posts we read.

    Buyer's Remorse?

I was sleeved on 2/19 and the only time I had any regret was when I didn't think I was losing fast enough. However, searching through the various forums I found I was not alone. My only regret is that I took so long to do it.
  12. Going for my 6 week follow up tomorrow. It is actually week 7, but I spent last week in the hospital with my mother. Wish me luck on my weigh in.

    $27,385.95

I fought with my insurance company Aetna for 18 months before being approved, even though I work for an insurance company who covers everything for the employees. My bill for everything was over 18,000 however my responsibility can be no more than 1800.
  14. I practiced eating slowly leading up to my surgery so I would not have issues. We are all trained to finish eating quickly due to work, or other factors. However,I was out and running late and messed up. Trust me post-op if you eat to quickly, your sleeve will revolt and you won't want to do it again. Between the stuck feeling and the trapped gas pain and inability to speak, you'll eat slowly the next time. In terms of not doing the right thing, I think we all deal with those feelings. Stay the course and reach out to your support team and this forum for advice. Good luck to you.

    Confused now.....

I too was originally going to get the band and was until three months pre-op. I know three people with the band who had issues. Don't get me wrong, they all lost weight initially but it did not last. One had his port replaced twice, the other had built up scar tissue and port infection requiring replacement and then experienced slippage. He then had a revision to the sleeve. The third had too many issues to list. He got married, took out fluid for his honeymoon and then to visit family and did not go background a fill. He now has 75 pounds to lose after initially losing 90 lbs. Both of the band people wished they went with the sleeve.

    Mood swings

I have experienced some mood swings but didn't think it was connected to my surgery until I read this forum. My wife and I had our first disagreement in a long time, and I stayed angry for 14 hours and would not talk or was very brief in my responses. I see this is normal now.
  17. Best wishes a speedy recovery and gas which moves smoothly.

    I got my first...

I haven't told anyone other than my immediate family. I am out on long term disability due to extensive neurosurgery prior to my sleeve surgery and have some noticeable weight loss. I tell people who ask that I eat less and needed to lose weight due to my previous surgery.
  19. I buy lump blue crab meat and use a little egg and pinko bread crumbs or flour to bind and will bake them or pan fry them. My wife has been working on a number I'd different recipes for me post op. My wife and I are eating healthier and my son is, but not the rest of the family all who are thin. Fortunately they all got the genes of my wife.

    Gallbladder attacks

My doctor also gave me Ursodol (anti gallbladder) medicine which I will be on for 6 months. I am also surprised by the number who were not prescribed any medicine to handle this issue common to rapid weight loss.

    I got my first...

I went to the gym many times lost a lot of weight injured myself or was working 16 hours a day and couldn't exercise and gained it all back plus more. If the people who made those stupid remarks knew how difficult and disciplined we have to be after surgery maybe they might not be so insensitive. Let them do our pre-op and post-op diet and see how "easy" it really is to stick without cheating. Better yet, let them not do it for a few weeks, but for life and see what they have to say.
