2 years later and I still am having problems from my leak. After a year and a half of complaining about constantly throwing up and being told I was scared of food or I was eating too much (half of a yogurt container) or it was my head, I was sent for a CT scan with contrast which showed I had a superior mesenteric thrombosis which developed right around the same time as my surgery. They can tell this by how much larger the smaller two veins have become carrying the extra blood. I was put in Coumadin for 5 months with labs drawn almost everyday the entire time to have another CT scan at the 5 month mark to show no changes, it was ruled chronic and it is an occlusion. That 1st CT scan also showed what looked like a stricture in my sleeve. An egd showed it is not a stricture, it is a distal angulation, 90 degrees ive been told. Food, especially anything solid, gets in that angle and sits until I basically throw it up which I hate doing. From where the food sits in the angled part at the bottom of my stomach, the top part of my sleeve is severely enlarged. I'm not concerned about that, I want to be able to eat. I have had a few balloon dilation in an effort to widen the angle out so food does not have such an angle to pass over with no success. If I want to be fixed, I need another surgery my stomach will be sewn up the middle, pulled sideways at the angle, and sewed back sideways at that part instead of up and down. I'm very scared of that as it may have to be open surgery add the location of it and if it has to be converted to gastric bypass, it is more risky as I had a jtube in my intestines and that bowel would have to be resectioned before it could be reattached. My other opinions have told me that over stapling the suture line causes pressure to build which causes a leak, the stomach acid that had gotten into my abdomen causes severe trauma which resulted in the smv thrombosis, the pressure build up and distress in the stomach can affect the shape of the sleeve causing mine to form at angle. Make sure you are checked for everything that could possibly be wrong before you go home.

This article says upper part of stomach but like you I'm pretty sure my surgeon said the bottom of sleeve. He bands all sleeve and bypass pts. You are right about it being very thin. He says he has had no problems from it at all.

I was like you and thought the 2% would be people older than me and people that weighed more than me. The truth is that anyone can be the 2%. Im 31, no comorbidities. Followed preop diet exactly. I was my drs first sleeve leak and I didn't do anything wrong to cause a leak as I was still in the hospital. I had agreed to let two reps from the makers of sleeve equipment be in the surgery room to watch my surgery which gave me the extra confidence that everything was going to be flawless. Leaks can happen to anyone. I wish I wouldnt have told myself that they'd only happen to older, bigger people with more problems. Don't want to scare you but I have three boys who I really thought I wouldn't be around for while in hospital two weeks. They are rare but can happen.

I had a leak. Woke up from a nap, stood up and felt the worst pain imaginable. You won't question a leak, you will definitely know something is wrong. My dr described it to my family like someone cutting open your abdomen and pouring lysol on your organs.

I wasnt really worried about complications before surgery. The makers of the staples and something else used for surgery (i believe johnson and johnson or a sub division of them?) had requested to be in the room during my surgery which gave me the confidence that my surgery would be flawless, lol. Theres no going back now although I haven't had any food in my mouth since may 8. Ughhh, it's so hard!!

I am 19 days out and no. I developed a leak on the day I was discharged. Was back in the hospital eight hours after I was discharged in so much pain I can't even explain it. I spent two weeks total in the hospital. I am 31, no comorbidities. I thought no way would I have complications. I had a second surgery to flush out my abdomen. Woke up with two drain tubes, a ng tube (super uncomfortable) and a feeding tube in my intestines. I was my drs first sleeve leak. My bp was about 60/30 and my heartrate stayed in 30's that first week. I developed pneumonia and a small sac of fluid around my heart. NO WAY would I have done it again. Dr.described the pain I was feeling to my family like this...imagine sistine cutting open your abdomen and pouring lysol all over your organs. Dilantin didn't touch the pain. Complications can happen to anyone although the chance is small.

I had my surgery on May 10 in Concord also. I had some complications and ended up in the hospital for two weeks. First time on scale after surgery I was up twenty two pounds I believe. It is finally off and then some. I loved the swabs but only dipped in ice water. The first drink I took I was so happy to take but it felt so different. I hope you have a speedy recovery!!
