My journey to the sleeve was a very long and arduous one.  Like many, I have had a weight problem my entire life, which has consumed and defined me.  In 2006, after hitting 290 pounds, I decided to take action and got banded (lapband).  Although I initially lost 120 pounds with the lapband, I also developed every single complication known to happen and underwent several more surgeries, including:  leaking port repair; cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder); lapband slip; lapband revision; and lapband erosion and removal.  I can tell you now that if your lapband slips; do NOT have a simple revision to move it back in place.  The proper course of action is probably converting it into the sleeve (but the surgeon I had at the time didn’t even give me the option; something I will never forgive her for).

After my lapband slip, I stated gaining the weight back…and never lost another pound (not even after the revision!)  My lapband slip/revision also happened to be in the midst of me getting married, so I had the horrible task of taking my dress out (from a size 8 to a 14).  A few months later, the lapband eroded and I got extremely ill…and fat.  Once the lapband came out, the weight piled back on at an incredible rate (approx.10 pounds every two weeks).  It felt like a total free fall.  With my new marriage, sanity and health on the line, I decided to give bariatric surgery one more try and started researching the gastric sleeve.

Weighing in at 272 pounds, I was lucky enough to find one of the best bariatric surgeons (Dr. Mitchell Roslin) and embarked on my new journey for a second chance at health and life.  On May 14, 2012, Dr. Roslin performed the sleeve gastrostomy on me.  I am only 9 days post-op as of the creation of this account, and I already know that I have made the best decision for myself.  I am eager to see what each day brings and I am looking forward to my new journey; new me.
