    Pre-Op And Mentally Exhausted...

What is your pre op diet and how long have you been on it? When is your surgery? I have to be on a diet for six months and I am struggling too. I keep thinking if I could follow this diet I wouldn't need the surgery!
  2. I am close to the same schedule as you. I have to be on the supervised diet for 6 months, looking at a surgery date in January. How is your diet going? I am struggling. I lost in the beginning but now I am afraid i have gained some back. It is tough, only 1300 calories.
  3. I am curious how long most people need to be off work after surgery, I don't have a desk job, I need to be able to stand and to some lifting although I can limit the amount for awhile.
  4. I have been looking into weight loss surgery for about have 6 months. I first decided I would get the lap band because it could be reversed and there was no radical surgery.I started on that cite and really liked it. I made my appointment with the bariatric surgery department and they let me know right off that they were not to gung ho on the lap band. I won't go into all the reasons but when I left my first appointment I knew I no longer wanted that surgery but still was not sure about gastric bypass. I have to be on a supevised diet for six month. The first month went well and I lost 10 pounds then I started to think maybe I could do this on my own. Now at three months I am hoping I have not gained any of the 10 pounds back and realize I can't do this on my own. If I could I would have along time ago I'm sure. I did start on that cite and got some good information. I heard about the sleeve surgery the day I was at the doctor's and they did give me some information on it. The two people I was with were in much worse health than me and that was the surgery they were having so I kind of dismissed it. Now that I have done much more research and found out my insurance will cover the sleeve I think I have figured out what i want to do. I am excited to learn more from the members on this forum. I think it is great we have a place we can support each other.

    Bariatric Surgery Do's And Don'ts

Wow a lot of great advise and inspiration! I am new to this cite and so glad to have a place to get information and inspiration. I still have three more months to go on my supervised diet.
  6. there is so much to learn, glad you are having such good results. the sleeve surgery my doctor does is the one were they remove the extra stomach.
  7. Thanks for all the honest answers. This would be so much easier if my husband thought it wasn't the worst idea ever. He is still of the opinion that if I start exercising like he does my weight problem would go away. I have steadily gained weight over the past 20 yearsand it is very difficult to exercise. I want to convince him that the surgery is a way to get were i want to be but right now we aren't talking about it. I am just working on my diet and getting a half hour on my exercise bike. I still have a few months to make up my mind, it helps hearing what others are rxperiencing.
  8. I have to be on a six month supervised diet and have a psych eval. The nurse was very surprised that is all I need.

    Deciding On Wls?

where to begin.... I am a 52 year old women, married with two daughters, twins that are 21 years old. One of my daughters is getting married next summer. I also work in an area I had never set out to do but I manage a retail store for a company that does not make plus size clothing. I feel my weight is holding my back from being the person I really want to be and at 51 it is now or never. If I give up and don't lose the weight my life will never be everything I want it to be. I have had my first appointment with the surgeon and found out I had to be on the pre-op diet for six months. I also originally went in for the lap band surgery but my surgeon isn't a big fan of that surgeryl He said he would do it if I insisted but recommended the gastric by-pass. The first month I did pretty good on my diet and when I had my meeting with my dietician and had 10 pounds. The second month hasn't gone as well. I got on here tonight to get my mojo back and focus on what I really want. I have not fully committed in my mind to the surgery but I don't want to miss my chance!

    I Hit Onederland!

Wow that is amazing! I had been looking into the lapband but my surgeon recommends gastric bypass. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around that...for some reason the lap band didnt scare me like the thought of gastric bypass. Glad you are having such good results.
  13. Has anyone read a good book on bypass surgery? I went on Amazon and there were so many to choose from. I have had my consultation, I have been approved by my insurance company and I am following a 6 month supervised diet. I am not sure about the surgery and am looking for more information. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know. Thanks!

    Denied

DL Coggin Thanks for the information and inspiration! I have been following the diet pretty well. It is very strict with so many changes from the way I was eating before. I have (almost) given up sugar and fried foods. I haven't done so well with the drinking Water, not drinking with meals and giving up diet coke and beer. This week my goal is to get going with the exercising a half hour a day. I am glad to know that the point of this 6 months is to get healthier and lose weight. It would be discouraging to think the insurance company wants you to fail to get the surgery.

    Denied

I am following the six month diet right now but now I am curious ....will insurance approve it if I lose weight or if I don't? I thought they were looking for me to be able to loss weight to make the surgery safer but if your insurance said they were looking to see if you could stay on the diet without the surgery they wouldn't approve it, How confusing!!!

    First Consultation

I met with the nurse, a PA and the surgeon. They gave me alot of information and asked alot of questions. They took my height and weight and determined my starting weight. Then I went to a meeting room with two other people that were just starting out. We watched a power point presentation on weight loss surgery. The last thing was meeting with the dietician and getting our pre op diet. I have to be on the medically supervised diet for 6 months because it is required by my insurance. I have an appointment with the dietician one month from the consult. At first I was upset at having to wait 6 months but I am okay with it now. It gives me time to change some of my habits and get mentally and physically ready for the surgery. This first month I have really concentrated on eliminating sugar and fried foods from my diet. I need to get going on exercise, I haven't been very consistent with getting that done. The exercise is required to help prevent blood clots when you have the surgery. The diet will help shrink your liver which makes the surgery go easier.

    Where Is Everyone From?

Williamsburg,Iowa. Dr. Jamal at the University of Iowa.
  18. I love everyone's lists. Mine would be to be able to get out of a chair without feeling I am in slow motion, getting out of a car without heaving myself out, and not feeling so self conscious about myself.

The Night Before My Journey Begins

Tomorrow is my consultation at the University of Iowa. I have to be at the hospital at 7:45 am. I better not spend to much longer on the computer because I need a good nights sleep. I did not sleep well last night. It is a strange coincidence that my appointment is exactly one year to the day that my daughter is getting married. I think that it is some what of an omen that this my be the path I should be on. I totally panic when I think about buying a dress for the wedding at the size I am now because it would look like a mumu and that is so not the look I am wanting! I named my blog "Looking Forward" because I am so tired of beating myself up for my past mistakes and failures. I just want to look forward and feel postive about the future. Tomorrow I will find out if the lapband will work for me.

Older Ladies - have a question

I have noticed a correlation between my hot flashes and sugar/chocolate consumption. If I eat sweets I get overwhelmingly warm about an hour or two later.

Glad you are doing so well. It is reassuring. I have a consultation on the 22nd. It is a 4-5 hour appointment so hopefully I will have a much better idea of my situation. One of my concerns is how long I will be off work. I hope everything keeps going so well. Enjoy your soup!
