If someone had told me 10 years ago that I would be having weight loss surgery I would have thought they were nuts! But then 10 years ago I was in my 30's and even though I was overweight then, I felt like I could get it under control. And I did try. Everything from Weight Watchers, Atkins, Fad Diets, Medically Supervised Diets, Diet Pills, etc. I did lose weight with several of these attempts, but in the end the weight crept back on and the scales kept moving higher! So frustrating!
It wasn't until this past summer that I started to consider the VSG procedure. I had a co-worker who had battled weight gain over the years and like me, she had tried everything to lose the weight. I noticed that she was losing weight and had a lot more energy and was looking great. Finally I asked her what type of new diet she was on because it was working and I wanted to try it! She laughed and told me that she had the VSG a few months earlier and that it was the best thing she had ever done for herself.
After that, I started reading up on the VSG and decided to look into it further at some point. Well, that point came a few months later when I started feeling worse than usual and made an appointment with my doctor. After a series of appointments and medical tests, I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure and Sleep Apnea. Not good!
I decided then that with my family's health history (high blood pressure, heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes) that I was headed towards the same fate very quickly. And I am determined not to go down that road! So here I am, about 2 weeks out from my VSG Surgery Date. Yes, I am nervous and anxious about the surgery, but I'm more worried about my health declining in the next few years. I know this is a life-time journey and I'm only at the very beginning of the journey.
