Considering Lap Band surgery
Trace Curry replied to Olivia3031's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Danielle, Just a word of caution - that pay up front and get reimbursed by your insurance later plan rarely works. Most all insurance plans have specific steps you have to take in order to be approved. If you don't follow those steps, they will not pay. Good luck! How many fills to feel restriction?
Trace Curry replied to hula girl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It takes 3-5 fills to get proper restriction. I've seen patients who have no restriction at all until the 5th fill. Everybody is differen!! Please help w making decision/flipped port
Trace Curry replied to lapmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I see flipped ports all the time, I've only had one patient that I could not maniuplate it under fluoro to the proper orientation. It flips right back after the fill, so you have to use fluoro each time, but that may be better and cheaper than surgery. I'd be happy to try to help her. How much does it cost to have the band removed?
Trace Curry replied to corinnel's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
While I have never had to remove a band that I placed, I have removed several that were put in elsewhere. In each instance the patient's insurance covered the removal. This is certainly not a guarentee that they will, but it's hopeful. DrC or anyone hiatal hernia question
Trace Curry replied to terrriho's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree, it shouldn't be a problem, although if your surgeon is early in his experience and you have a large hernia, someone with more experience might be worth looking into. It depends on what type of slip it is. If it's a concentric slip, or pouch dilation, it may get better on its own. If it's an anterior prolapse, it'll probably have to be fixed. All I was saying is that I've been doing this for a few years and have done 400 bands and have yet to see it. Nor have I ever heard it discussed in any of the zillions of conferences I have attended, so I would characterize it as rare. Therefore, for the average patient who has no symptoms of the problem (which would accurately represent the lady who asked me the question) I wouldn't lay awake at night worrying about getting it. In no way was I implying that it would not be a serious problem for the rare patient who gets it. It is impossible to warn a patient about every possible complication of a procedure, I'm sure there are some band-related complications that we have even yet to learn about. It's sometimes a curse of the band patient...anything that irritates the diaphragm can cause hiccups. The trick is not to get anything stuck, then you won't get them! Bob, I do bands on people with hiatal hernias all the time. I can't envision why it would be any easier or harder to do a band or a bypass on you, the hernia should be dealt with either way. It's not a big deal really you should do fine. Article on lapband complications
Trace Curry replied to TamifromAL's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't read this study, but my guess is (looking at the surgery dates) that most or all were done with the out-dated perigastric technique. This has been recognized as a problem hence the change to the pars flaccida technique. If the bands were done with perigastric, this article is irrelevant to people getting banded today. Pouch packing and reflux? Dr. C and experienced bandsters
Trace Curry replied to S@ssen@ch's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes anything that leads to pouch dilation could contribute to reflux. The stomach wall is normally fairly thick because of the muscles within. When the tissue becomes thinned out, it kind of gets "lazy" and doesn't act to propel things downwards anymore. So food, acid, etc, just lays there above the band and therefore can reflux into the esophagus. HELP...Many doctors, no answers???
Trace Curry replied to Carlene's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think patients who have nocturnal reflux probably all get some aspiration, whether or not they get pneumonia or not depends on a number of factors. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often to be honest. The only way to solve the problem is to unfill the band, but this may lead to less weight loss. The presence of a hiatal hernia would certainly aggravate the problem. I hope I answered the question! QX for DR C RE: Any patient's like me??
Trace Curry replied to Kayford's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Kay, Some patients are like that, it can be frustrating. I have some who just can't eat or drink in the morning. There is no easy solution that I know of for this, if any bandster out there knows of one I'd love to hear it. Dr. C -
Are you sure this is not the new Johnson & Johnson/Ethicon band? I can't imagine Inamed would release a new band and not tell all the band surgeons - I've never heard of it. I know I have a lot of aftercare patients on here so I thought I would post that I will be doing fills on the first Saturday of every month from 10-11am as a convenience for folks who have a long way to travel. This way you can come in, get your fill, and hang around town for a couple of hours to make sure things are going down ok before you head back home!
