If this Fluid is truly coming from within the system then I would culture the bacteria, find out what antibiotic it was sensitive to, and inject some saline with antibiotic in it. Might not work but worth a try. Eric, I did check and the circumference of the J&J band is the same as the VG. Having my band removed - hated I did it

Unfortunately not everyone can tolerate the band so don't feel like you're a failure. Are you being converted to another type of weight loss surgery? Hard to say without truly knowing the status of your pouch... What we usually do is a complete unfill, 2 weeks of liquids/mushies, then soft food for 2 weeks, then start filling again. My mistake Eric (don't tell my wife as I've been telling her for years that I'm never wrong!). I didn't read your post carefully enough. I'll have to do some research to see if there is any difference in the circumference of the J&J band vs. the VG. They are both larger bands, I've seen the J&J band and put some in on pigs but it is not yet FDA approved in the US. Regardless, something is not right if you can only get liquids down. Bev, Sorry to butt in here...pick up a Pedometer (we have free ones in the office) and do 10,000 steps a day. This is a great way to kickstart your weight loss! Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio www.TheBandDoctor.com 877.442.BAND

My guess is that you needed a VG band but got a 10cm instead. I have been in this situation myself - there is no magic light that goes off to indicate what size, it is an educated guess. You can't go on forever on liquids, if the problem doesn't alleviate itself you will have to be switched to a VG. Slippage + Hernia = resurgery..change band?
Trace Curry replied to evcase's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
In my experience about 50-60% of patients in your boat will do well after repair of slip and hiatal hernia, about 30-40% will have further problems. The sleeve is not a bad option for maintenance especially. Hope this helps! I think that is a VG band although in the US at least it holds 10cc. Doesn't really matter as long as we know it's not a 4cc band. My guess is that you have a hiatal hernia. It's difficult to prove with standard testing though once you have a band. My doctors opinion?? Babs in Texas???Help
Trace Curry replied to Becky Lambert's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Becky, If you can't keep your band you don't have to be converted to a DS, that's a little radical for someone who weighs 165. I'd look into a vertical sleeve gastrectomy maybe. This is a complicated issue, there is no way I can tell you what is wrong over the internet. Usually it is a combination of small things that add up to a small loss but I suggest you follow up with your surgeon. We expect for patients to lose at least a pound a week especially at first. I don't think we have any real data but my guess is about 50% of the time it will normalize with an extended period of liquids. My worst fear has come true.....my band has slipped
Trace Curry replied to KatzGirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The stomach doesn't really shrink, but the fat around the stomach which is inside the band does shrink. This results in a a looser band which may require more fill. I don't think it makes it more likely to slip though. I usually unfill patients for 4 weeks, sometimes put them on Medifast so they don't gain. If you had 7.6 cc total put in and they only got 2.6 out I might be worried. If 7.6cc was the actual number the surgeon got out the last time and now he only got out 2.6 then I might be. A little can leak, like less than 1cc/year, because the membrane is porous (at least some people think so). 5cc is too much for that though. Feel free to come to our support group at Deaconess, I fail to see why any practice would deny a patient help through a support group who needed it. For some clinics it's more about the business than the patient maybe, I don't know. This should not be your worst fear...a slip is quite fixable. Not that you should be happy about it, but you'll be fine in the long run! Urgent question for Dr.C (unfilled but still feeling tight)
Trace Curry replied to Kati's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It could be a large hiatal hernia, could be a slip missed by xray. Yes I would probably do a scope but it's only useful if you're scoped by someone who has a lot of expertise in band patients specifically. Whatever it is it needs to be dealt with soon if you can't keep anything down. If you were my patient and you had a J&J band that is completely unfilled and you still can't keep anything down you would get an operation. Has to be something wrong... holes in the band?????
Trace Curry replied to missy67's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Missy, I've never heard of a hole in the band itself, but you can get a leak where the tubing enters the port. It's pretty easily fixed.
