My nightmare journey with a band
Trace Curry replied to Listywood's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Maybe it's a small world but I took out a band from an Idaho patient banded in Mexico about a year ago! I could probably put you in touch with her if you send me her email address. Might be good moral support! Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Band removed -- Back and feeling good

I think you would probably lose more weight with a sleeve. Your insurance won't cover it, nor would they cover a band with your BMI at 30 though. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Alexandra, Have you thought about a sleeve gastrectomy? I think it's a good option for bandsters who had complication requiring removal. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? My slip rate is 1.6%. It's not a matter of who is at fault, it's just a fact and surgeons should be happy to volunteer this info. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Band removal while pregnant???
Trace Curry replied to NataliesMommy's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
There are certain times during pregnancy when it's ok to undergo surgery and certain times it's not advisable. I would talk to your OB/GYN about it. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? I don't see why you should tell them - if they ask I certainly wouldn't lie, but there is no benefit to you to call them up and volunteer the information! It's your employer that doesn't provide the benefit, not your insurance company, so they are the ones that you need to give grief to. Good luck! Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? A couple of weeks ago I posted a pic on my messageboard of a hiatal hernia. It was a small one so it was difficult for some folks to tell what was going on there. I posted another pic of a huge one, with a label so it's obvious what is going on! http://www.thebanddoctor.com/messageboard_BB/viewtopic.php?t=114 Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Leatha, It looks pretty good to me, I don't see any evidence of slip there, but not being able to see the live fluoro puts me at a disadvantage. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Aboslutely I would pursue it. The easiest thing would be to get a sleep test done. Our insurance coordinator Tracy is the best in the land, if there is any way to get it done, she'll get it done. Today we had 4 patients in the office who each drove independantly from the same city 4 hours away today, so we decided that it might be a good idea to have a messageboard on our site so that patients could arrange ridesharing for fills. You can get to the messageboard by going to www.TheBandDoctor.com and clicking on "Our Forums" at the top right. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Fills and unfills directly won't cause a slip, but if you had a fill and are too tight and puking your guts out and you don't get an unfill, that could. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Lap-Band or Gastric By-pass???

Early on the reason you feel tight at first and then the restriction goes away is because the fat pad around the stomach is shrinking, effectively making the band looser. There is some thought that the band can leak (not evaporate) very small amounts over a period of a year or so because the membrane may be semipermeable. Sort of like a helium balloon going down with time. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question? Slips usually don't happen from one episode of vomiting it's usually after repeated spells. If you are vomiting, get your butt in to see your surgeon. In this case the patient presented with pain and not keeping even liquids down. Dr. C Cincinnati, Ohio Got a question?
