Bowel Movement
sheila5497 replied to D1NOnlySexyLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
P.s. if you start to have more than 4 a day just give your dr office a call and let them know. Your dr may say that it is ok but it doesn't hurt to give them a call. -
Bowel Movement
sheila5497 replied to D1NOnlySexyLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your bowel movements are normal for post op. I am 2 weeks post op and still have the watery/sawdust like poops. My dr. Said that until I start eating more solid I would have those types of stools. And fair warning don't trust your farts until you get a better idea of the pooping pattern. -

If you don't feel comfortable with your Dr. Go with your instincts. Not having faith in your doctor can't inadvertently affect your recovery. You are right by doing research and it is ok if you decide to seek a different doctor. Just to let you know that the sleeve used to be phase one of a 2 step procedure and just recently gained popularity because of the success rate with just phase one and became approved as a single surgical procedure 5 years ago. That procedure was called the duodenal stitch. So if your dr has plenty of experience with that procedure then it might put your mind at ease. By all means you must feel comfortable with your dr. And it most certainly is ok to check out your options. I would suggest that you inquire about each dr. Infection, leak, and success rates. Also, find out how involved he is in the pre and post op support sessions and education. This will give you an idea of how knowledgable he is as well. Hope this helps. -
Well today was Cinco de mayo and we had some friends over so I think I might have over done it a bit. I made some virgin piña coladas for the kids and thought since that was a liquid I would try it. Totally forgetting about the sugar content in the pineapple juice I had a half a glass and boy did it go down easy. And then 30 mins. Later well, let's say it didnt last. The dr. Told me I could advance to a soft diet (anything I could swish with a fork is considered soft). Well stupid me thought to myself....hummmm, I can squish a grilled hotdog I will try that, it tasted awesome and so I was able to eat a little less than half of one but I will have to say it definately made me feel like crap. I didn't start felling better for an hour. Totally was not worth it. I also started to accually tell when I was getting full before I got there. I know I was really bad today and I have been compliant up to this point. But, boy what a reality check. Not quite ready for hotdogs yet. I am going to try a hard boiled egg tomorrow morning without the yolk, if that is ok that will probably be my main source of Protein. I did find eggbeaters egg whites portion size (2 egg white) At the grocery store. Managed to get all my fluids in. My dr. Said that the Protein Shakes should be recorded as liquid intake. I will try to post tomorrow.

I looked up some of her recipes too! Since I love corned beef hash I managed to cook some up and tried it. It has 21 grams of protein per cup but of course I could only eat a couple of teaspoons it was heaven! I have also been eating stonyfield OIKOS 0% fat caramel yogurt which has 10 grams of protein in 4 oz. I am not too concerned about the carbs at this point as my 4 year old keeps me pretty busy and I do lots of walking! The nectar protein drinks are ok however I have noticed that the powder seems to want to settle at the bottom. At the end of the day if I have not consumed enough protein I will use the liquid protein to boost my intake but only as a last resort. It tastes like cherry goo. Not very good however, only 1oz. Gives me 15 grams of protein. I did just get some pudding mix I ordered from bariatric choice and surprisingly it did not taste bad. That is 12 grams per 4oz. Well my son is starting to stir so off I go! Back to his world!

Hey guys... Sorry I have not been on here in a few days. The first week I had some help with my 4 year old son but, this week has been crazy busy with him since he has tons of energy. I'm exhausted. I too am on puréed for another few days. I have been having trouble getting all my Protein in and as far as the meds I have to take well, can I say yyuucckk! Most of my meds have to be crushed or come in liquid form. I did find that most of my meds go down a little easier with baby food bananas rather than applesauce. My Dr. Says I have to crush them for a another 2 weeks before taking them whole. I really am having a hard time choking them all down twice a day. For the first week I had to crush coreg twice a day and now he added actigall twice a day which also needs mixed with applesauce (anti-gallstone) I guess because the risk of gallstone increases significantly after WLS because of the rapid weight loss. He also started me on Calcium and 2 flinstone chewables a day. The highlight of my day has been the flinstone chewables... Is that sad. As a nurse I have been checking my BP before every dose of coreg praying that I don't have to take it but, no luck yet. Can't wait till I can take the pills whole. It would definately make life a whole lot easier (and better tasting). On a lighter note, I had my 1 week follow up visit yesterday. He said that things were going as expected and that I am doing great. I can start soft foods on Monday. His version of soft is anything I can squish through a fork is ok. I will do that for 2 weeks and advance to regular foods that can be moistened in Water or broth. I lost 10 lbs since discharge (would have been more had I not gained 7 lbs of fluids in the hospital). I started my journey on March 5,2012 at 242, April 5, 2012 at 236 and yesterday I weighed in at 216. I am feeling pretty good about that. I figure once I can do more than just walk for excersize I will lose more and gain more muscle. The burning question I have is: how long does you docs tell you you should crush your meds?

I'm doing real good. I am 5 days postop and am still trying to figure out weather the feelings in my stomach are hungry or full. It is a different feeling now. I started at the hospital at 222 and gained 7 pounds in the hospital (all IV fluids). Today I am at 220. -

Am now going on three days post op. I just came home today and I seem to be having trouble burping without it being kind of like a foamy burp. I am afraid to burp because I think it will bring something up. Does any one have any suggestions? I am also encountering a problem with temperature regulation, one minute I am hot and the next minute I am freezing?

Well I was able to increase my clear liquid intake to 3 oz today. I too felt really nauseous the first day and spent most of my first night wretching after each dose if dilaudid I took which REALLY hurt and left me sore today. A combination of lortab and phenrgan worked. I think the IV meds just hit me too fast. I feel 80% better today. I did 2 laps this am 5 laps with the hubby and kiddos this evening and just finished 3 laps. I hope everyone is ok God bless!

I'm getting a little nervous. I too work in the orthopedics department at my hospital. I was told my hospital stay would be 2 days. The first day I can't have anything by mouth and then the second day after the leak test I can have something to drink, 30 ml an hour. I found a smoothie mix at SAMs by yoplait that I mix with silk vanilla soy milk which gives me 16 grams of Protein. I have EAS myoplex with 40 grams of protein and Syntrax Nectar protein powder that gives you 23 grams of protein to one bottle of Water. I also have SF Jello. I also found some light Hawaiian punch however it has no protein but is considered a Fluid. The mashed potatoes however I thought had too many carbs so I decided to pass on them for now. I will probably buy them when I need a break from the protein. I also have cottage cheese and some beef and chicken brooth and unsweetened applesauce. Good luck to every one tomorrow. I will be 1st case tomorrow so I have to be at the hospital at 6 am. I started at 242 on march 2nd. When I started my liquid diet 2 weeks ago I was 236 and today I am 224.

All The Protein Shakes I've Tried Ao Far, Upset My Stomach
sheila5497 replied to LTARLTON's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I have found a protein powder that kind of tastes like a sports drink and has zero sugar and carbs with 23 grams of protein per scoop. I mix it with a bottle of water. It's called Nectar by syntrax. Right now they are offering a special on their website. They send you 13 sample packs of their 13 favors they offer for $13. I personally like the Caribbean cooler. Www.syntrax.com it also has no aspartame. -
Would it be a big no no if I ate A solid protein vs a liquid protein (a slice of deli chicken)? I feel like I am starving and this is only day 2.

Pre-Op Two Week Liquid Diet
sheila5497 replied to strawberryblue's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I am just wondering. What seems to be the norm for the pre op diet? My Dr. Says 2 weeks of liquid. Is it the low carbs and sugar free that is of most concern or the fact that we should not eat solid food? I feel like I am starving myself not eating any solids.
