My hometown is Sioux City, Iowa. I had a pretty normal childhood and was not a fat kid. I was an athlete in high school participating in football, wrestling, track and even competing in Judo. My senior year in high school I was about 6'5" weighed 260 pounds and was at 10-15% body fat. After high school was a different story. I started drinking heavily, smoking, chewing, overeating and just generally not caring about my health. Six years later I went to the police academy and weighed in at 300 pounds.
Now I am 38 years old, I live in Omaha, Nebraska and work as a Police Officer. Um yeah...fat cop...heard all the jokes. Over the course of 14 years I just kept steadily gaining weight. In July of 2011 I decided that I had enough of being fat. I owed to my children to be responsible about my health. I decided to go to a bariatric surgery seminar. I then started my six months of meetings and weigh ins. I learned a lot at the monthly meetings and I am glad I went. I completed my pre-surgery physical in December of 2011 and was approved for surgery in January of 2012.
My heaviest weight was 473 pounds on February 28, 2012. My surgery was on March 26, 2012 and I weighed in at 446 pounds. I lost 27 pounds in four weeks mostly due to the 10 day pre-op liquid diet (which I did not cheat on by the way). When I went to my one week (nine days actually) check up I weighed in at 425 pounds. That is a loss of 21 pounds in 9 days. I was also taken off of my high blood pressure medication. Also, it is important to note that I no longer drink alcohol, use tobacco, drink soda, or eat fast food. Just eliminating those things from my life has helped me feel so much better. So far that is my story.
