I had my lap band surgery one month ago yesterday AND today! How?
During my surgery, my dr (Pamela Gruchacz) found a large hiatal hernia, which she repaired. Apparently, as my stomach moved up and down through the hole, it drug fat down into that cavity at the top of my stomach. Anyway, my dr placed the band between my stomach and the "fat pad" and filled it to 3.5 cc, I think. After the surgery, I had a hard time keeping anything down, but some people have the same experience, which usually resolves shortly after returning home.
Mine did not.
I began vomiting anything I consumed, whether it was an ounce of water or even my pain meds. I'd returned home at 3:00 pm that day, and by 9:00 pm the vomiting was so violent and constant that I contacted me dr. She thought I should see how it goes through the night--I don't think I made her understand how bad it was. She had her nurse contact me first thing in the morning and after I described the horrific night I had--I continued vomiting violently, even though I consumed nothing--she immediately scheduled me for the OR and had me come back in for a second surgery.
My dr determined that the fat pad was placing too much pressure on the band and effectively closed off my stomach. She went back in and popped the band, removed all fluids, sliced the fat pad to release the pressure from the band, and placed about 3.5 cc's in the band. I was so exhausted; it took an extra hour for me to wake from surgery! My dr had me overnight in the hospital for observation (I was VERY grateful for that). She came into my room shortly after I woke and told me I already looked better. I agreed. I fell 100% better! I had been afraid I would pop, blow, or tear something with all the vomiting, but thank goodness everything was in good shape.
Just a couple of days ago, she added 2 ccs into the band. I was kind of scared, considering my first experience. I really expected to feel ... tight or crampy or something, but nope. I feel great! Every so often I feel a twinge, but anything, compared to that first night, is a calk walk.
I really love my dr. She's rational, doesn't freak out, explains EVERYTHING, is compassionate, and has a great sense of humor. Her nurse, Maria, is the bomb, too.
So I've lost 10 pounds since surgery ... lost 6 during the pre-surgical, no carb diet, so I'm happy.
Thanks my story and I'm sticking to it ... Robyn
