My surgery is July 18th so I have some time. Until then I'm supposed to be following a low carb, high Protein diet. However, I have a ton of food in my cabinets that I need to fix and get rid of so I'm continuing in moderation while cleaning out my pantry. I've also begun working out at the local gym. Other than that, I check the forums and keep on living!

Non Supportive Primary Care Doctor
aleach0003 replied to carlab51's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I recently changed pcps and had an awesome experience with my md. While I didn't need anything from him in regards to my surgery, I did discuss with him the type of procedure and when I was having it. He asked that I give one of his cards to my surgeons office so they could fax my records to him. Then he wanted to schedule my next appointment a week after I had surgery so he could monitor me as well. As I was leaving, he wished me the best of luck and said he would be praying for me. Life is too short to have a crappy doctor. -
Stephy, You can be my sleeve buddy!! Lol

Freaking Out About Lovenox -- Anyone Else Have To Do This? Self-Injections?
aleach0003 replied to Patrick Curl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lovenox, arixtra, heparin, fragmin, etc. is given subcutaneously. So, to the OP, the back of the arm, stomach, thigh would be fine. Most of my patients report that the stick itself isn't bad but a few seconds afterward, they feel a stinging sensation. Be aware, most people develop bruising from the shots and this is normal. Personally, I'm going home on arixtra for 2 weeks after surgery. While I'm a nurse, I'm an awful patient and cannot fathom giving myself the injections. Therefore, I've delegated my aunt, a nurse as well to be my shot giver. LOL -

Therapy And Counseling After Surgery?
aleach0003 replied to Butterflylegacy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am seeing a therapist as well. She actually leads a support group sponsored by the bariatric program I'm working with (centennial). Even though I am seeing her for more than just weight loss related issues, I am very comfortable talking to her and hope my therapy will help my personal healing process. I see her every three weeks and try to coordinate my visits when there is a support group going on as well. -
This week I not only stepped into the local gym for the first time, I signed a membership, and I'm meeting the personal trainer today to set goals, etc. I have made it known that I am having bariatric surgery and have received good vibes so far.

You can usually find it in a lemon lime or cherry flavor. It's kinda carbonated. I pour it over ice for my patients and they tolaterate mag citrate much better than go lytely as far as taste is concerned.

To the op, I know exactly what you're going though. At the beginning of 2012 I started a new job with a new hospital (rn as well). While I'm not in a probationary period anymore, I have limited vacation time and am not eligible for FMLA. Anyway, our organization has a medical leave available at our managers discretion. While it isn't perfect, that's the route I've decided to take. Additionally, I've been open with my manager and am having surgery during the summer when census is lower and after more people will be trained for our shift. As a newer employee I'm trying not to make my surgery a burden for my coworkers or the floor. As far as the amount of time you're taking off, you're not counting for any complications, giving yourself time to adjust to your new stomach, etc. This is major surgery. People with gallbladder surgery take off longer than you're planning or thinking, fwiw. I'm not trying to be a downer, but Im just Concerned nurse to nurse. If it is any help, my surgeon lets some people go back after a week but after he learned I was a nurse and what kind of floor I worked on (med-surg/medical detox), he told me 2.5 to 3 weeks. Best of luck.

10 Days To Sleeve...how Strict Were You With Liquid Diet?
aleach0003 replied to heidihud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank goodness I dont have to do the extended liquid diet like a lot of the others. I have to go on clears 2 days prior to surgery but follow a low carb, high protein diet until that time. -

Scared And Excited
aleach0003 replied to medictazman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just finished up my insurance requirements and received an email today stating they sent my info to insurance. I'm looking to have surgery in July or August. There's a mix of emotions involved-- fear, excitement, apprehension. I too am afraid ill mess up or wont lose weight. In addition, I am also an RN and look at everything from a medical standpoint. However, things will be okay!!! You've done your research and have hopefully made the best decision for the outcome you're wanting. Best of luck!! -
Today I have my psych eval, nutrition evaluation and surgeon consultation. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Wish me luck!!!

I have a health o meter scale that weighs to 380. Bought it at Walmart. It measures in .2 lb increments and is consistent which I like. I used to be scale obsessed and weigh every day but since around Christmas, I've only been weighing in on Fridays. There are so many other things that measure success besides the numbers on a scale!!!!

Hi all! This is my first post but I've been reading and lurking for a while now. I had a question. I have specific areas of time in which it would be the best for me to take off work and have surgery. I self-schedule @ work ( RN) and plan on taking vacation time as well. When scheduling, do you have to take the date the hospital gives you or can you tell them, "I would like to have surgery on this day"? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
