    liquor

I experimented at about 7 mos preop. I used to enjoy beer- not so much now. It just doesn't taste good. I stick to patron gold. I get buzzed pretty quick, but I rebound quickly. I tried a margarita while out with the girls and it was too much. I felt sick. So, I stick to my old reliable- TEQUILA!
  2. I found that there was no way to keep it a secret or keep my health business private. People have no boundaries. I lost my weight fairly quickly. People have a hard time with this as it is not typical. I'd also like to say that being a private person is not synonymous with "ashamed". Sent from my iPhone using VST

    What to tell work people

I tried not sharing with others at work. I feel that my health is my business. I lost over 100 pounds in a little less than 9 months. This is so rapid that people started asking me point blank if I had surgery. I HATE lying, so boy did it irk me when this happened. I don't say to people, "wow, it looks like uve put on quite a bit of weight. Have u been eating more?,". The other one I get is the, "r u okay. U have lost so much weight. R u having health issues?" I would never in a million years say this to people. It's like saying, "oh, is ur thyroid acting up. U r looking overweight. U just keep gaining." Grrr. As u can tell it frustrates the heck out of me. People lack boundaries. My point is this- I wish u the best of luck in keeping it to urself if that's what u choose, but be prepared for the noseys! I want the real story

Hi! I ran my first half at six months post op. I was sleeved in march and ran it in sept. i didnt set out to do it that way, it just happened. I signed up for the tinkerbell half in July concerned on whether or not id be able to do it in January. I started doubg 5ks and then transitioned to 10ks. A local half was going on a Sunday- my friends and i signed up that Friday. It was amazing. I was able to run the entire distance. Who knew?! I was not a runner presleeve. I'd try and then was sidelined due to overuse injuries- that and just being too heavy for my joints. anythings possible. I didn't start having difficulties with injuries or strains until I started using the treadmill. I struggle every now and then with hip flexor pain, so now I just stay off the treadmill and it has made a world of difference. Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Zumba

I think six weeks if ur not modifying any moves. It depends on the instructor and how much ur really moving. Zumba can be quite the workout. Talk to ur surgeon, but the general rule of thumb is four to six weeks. There's a whole lotta of booty and belly shaking. Moving the abdominal muscles in that fashion too soon could lead to some major discomfort. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using VST

Working out within the first month of surgery...

I know it's difficult to sit idle, but walking is the safest. You will have plenty of time to get all sorts of crazy cardio in and u will probably feel way better than working out preop. It's worth the wait to heal correctly. Hang in there! In the mean time u could increase ur walking distance as u get stronger. Just don't overdo it, take it easy. Sent from my iPhone using VST

    For Distance Runners

Hi ya! I know u asked BTB but i figured its been awhile since i chimed in on anything. I'm 5'3 and I'm not a fast ass. My fastest time is 58 and change. That was on a rolling course. If I'm on a training run, I always run slower. There's nothing like race excitement to give u that extra added edge. I've been checking in from time to time. U guys r amazing! I'm having some off and on health issues that have been throwing off my run schedule pretty significantly. I'm so glad to be able to read and participate in the posts. It keeps me eager to get back into the swing of things when I'm able. Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Running Back to Back?

I'm looking into training plans for a marathon that's in March. A little background- I used the Couch to 5K/10K training app, but after that I stuck to my method of running 7 miles on Tuesdays/Thursdays and then a long run on Saturdays. I would increase the mileage of my long runs no more than 2 miles per week. I always take at least one day off in between my runs. I have never ran back to back to due my almost irrational fear that I will injure myself. My longest run is 20 miles, but it's been awhile. I started looking at training programs. I checked out Hal Higdon's intermediate marathon plan. I'm not worried about the mileage, but I am concerned about running back to back. His plan includes running on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I plan on swimming on Mondays as cross training (I already do this as recovery after a long run). Any thoughts? I have nine weeks until the big event. I originally thought that I would just pick up on week 10 of his training plan. I'm concerned about injuring myself, but at the same time I think I need to do a bit more in preparing for this event. Any suggestions? Different training plan?

    Running Back to Back?

Thanks! No, I haven't tried this before. I have heard of it, but was unsure about how I feel about it. I will definitely look into this. Btw, I can't believe that I forgot to tell you that this guy was running COMPLETELY barefoot yesterday. I thought about you, BTB. I didn't see any vibrams though. Anyhow, this guy looked really uncomfortable. His posture was definitely different. I don't know how he managed on the 2 mile stretch of a gravelly path. Yikes! It was pretty neat though watching him run on blacktop like it was nothing. Light like a feather!

WOW! No wonder why you are so close to goal- you sound extremely disciplined and systematic with your weight loss and training. Yay success! and double yay with no skin surgery. Btw- I like the new profile pic!

NO KIDDING! That's exactly what I was thinking when reading about Fiddleman's caloric intake question. Fiddleman, you should message pdxman. He was extremely helpful when I messaged him about the same thing your inquiring about. I don't know much, but I would say that you definitely should be eating more cals. I don't know what the magic number is. But I do know that you don't want to burn muscle.

    Running Back to Back?

Thanks, guys! I greatly appreciate the feedback. I typically walk at a brisk pace for 5 minutes before running. On the long runs, I will do a slow jog for a 1/4 mile, stretch, and start my run. I always cool down and then stretch post workout. I think I'm going to change it up to always stretching pre-run and pay special attention to the hip flexors. I don't know what is causing the pain, but I'm guessing it could be from poor warm up, over training, or poor muscle tone. I googled and found some good stretches and I think I'm going to start doing it twice a day. I also found some info saying that the hip flexors are having to work too hard to compensate for poor glute and ab muscles. I'm only going to tweak the warm up and resting after a long run. I'm not going to cross train- just rest. I usually drink a Protein shake aftwards (the only exception is at race/events. I'm back on the treadmill tomorrow. Hopefully it won't be too nagging. It didn't phase me today unless I had to step up or if I accidentally crossed my legs. It's definitely not joint pain- so that's good, right?! I'll keep you posted and THANK YOU again for the feedback. Btw- I set a new PR yesterday! Half marathon in 2:05. Yeah!!

    Running Back to Back?

Thanks, BTB! I appreciate the insight and support. So here's an update- last week I logged a total of 29 miles in five days of actual running. I switched back and forth between the treadmill and outside. My left hip flexor started twinging a little but not too bad. I had this happen before with treadmill running. Yesterday, I ran a half and it hurt but I was able to run through it. It bothered me last night while in bed. I skipped this mornings workout. How does one know when to stop? I don't want to train through an injury and make it worse, but I don't want to over react and lose training time. It's an uncomfortable nuisance pain- not sharp acute pain. Any thoughts? Yay! I'm doing a happy dance over here for you!! What an accomplishment, you totally kicked butt, lady! You are going to rock that half marathon. I am so excited for you! Thank you for posting about your injury. It just shows that an injury doesn't necessarily mean the end to running. Way to go and congrats again!! Have fun at Monster Jam!!

YAY JUNIORS!! I stray over there every once in awhile. What a great feeling to not only be able to shop in a general store (not specifically for plus size) but to also be able to shop in the juniors! Woot! Woot! Btw, I love me some leggings. Can't seem to have too many. Congrats!
  20. WHAHOO!! Congrats! That is very exciting and quite an accomplishment. Keep up the great work!

    New gal

Hi and welcome to the loser's bench! It sounds like your healing well and everything is chugging along. I remember being affected by smells as well. Just hang in there. If I thought I was really hungry than I would try to drink some water or a little protein shake. I couldn't get much in and that was a chore. It's a good physical reminder that our tummies physically cannot eat and handle all the good things that we are so hyper sensitive to. Great job with your liquid! Don't forget to be mindful of your protein! Lastly, enjoy the weight loss!

    For Distance Runners

Im glad to hear that the energy squares worked out! As for the physical ailments. I've had problems similar to that when running outside at a higher elevation or in really cold weather (25-35 degrees). Was it muscle fatigue from running tightly? Were you running at a pace faster than usual? Did you recover fully from your previous run? Could this be left over crud from when you were sick? Hmm. I would take all of these things into consideration and I am curious to what others have to say. Btw, great time 6.5 miles in an hour! My best official 10K time was 59 minutes and change in San Francisco. It was a tad bit hilly. You are going to be fast when you are at the height of your training. Keep up the great work.
