Self- Pay Insurance- does that cover WLS at all?
peatie replied to Pinkbetty25's topic in Insurance & Financing
I'd start by looking up the benefits of your package. Not all companies carry the same coverages, because let's face it...it's expensive. Unfort it's just another way to cut corners. Good luck! -
I have to meet w/the PT once/mo for 3 consecutive mos and just fill out a form which indicates what I do for exercise and what my goals are for the next month (regarding exercise). That's it. Pretty simple. I am doing my appts thru a weight loss institute and they have on staff the PT, Nut, NP and Psych, so whenever I go in to see my Nut, they schedule the PT at the same time.

I don't have experience, but i hear peer-to-peer is a good thing b/c the Dr can specifically talk up your case. Good luck!!

My Dr's office said they submitted to Aetna on Friday and had the approval on Monday, so it can be quick. Hopefully you'll hear back soon!! I'm in the same boat...want mine done this year since I already have paid the deductibles and it would be super cheap.

UPDATE: I'm going to have LapBand surgery instead
peatie replied to Dave_NW's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm sorry you were misled. I can only sympathize with the frustration you're feeling at the moment..."let's get this show on the road and lose some weight." Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish. If $ were not an option and your insurance said you could get WHATEVER surgery you wanted, which would it be?? If it's still the sleeve, I'd reconsider a loan and getting it done in Mx. Anytime you go into a situation with "well, i can always do ____ if this doesn't work out.." then it's really not the right choice. LB sounds more like a right now choice to me, but not the RIGHT choice. I don't want to make you feel bad for choosing the LB, but before you completely commit to it, please exhaust all options of the sleeve. I'm with Aetna, and if they decide not to cover me, but will for RNY or LB, then I'm self-paying in Mx. The other choices are just not options for ME. -
"Don't lose too much weight"
peatie replied to Lisalu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think people mean well and it's as much of an adjustment for them to see us smaller as it is for us. I recall the first time i lost a lot of weight, i was in the middle of the healthy range, so by no means 'underweight' and everyone around me said i was 'too small' and i looked like a lollipop. I came to the conclusion that they just weren't USED to seeing me as a small person. As long as you're satisfied with how you look and feel, the world will eventually catch up with you. -

Thinking of JG and her family and hoping for a full recovery! -
I never had one done, but my father and best friend did. They were both under anesthesia and asleep for it. There was some pain in their groin where the probe went into their artery, but other than that, they just rested the rest of the day and were fine. I think you'll be ok too... just relax, it's not an uncommon procedure. You'll be fine GL on thurs!

Meds After Surgery
peatie replied to wannabehealthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How do you swallow any pills if you can only sip sip sip? When i take my small ones, i still need a couple big gulps to get it down. -
Why 5 years? Their website only says For adults age 18 years or older, presence of severe obesity that has persisted for at least the last 2 years (24 months) . Why didn't only two years matter?

Meds After Surgery
peatie replied to wannabehealthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd like to know too since i take synthroid as well, and cannot take hydrocodone. -
Red meat is considered from any 'hoofed' animal, so yes, venison falls into that category.
-
can you take Miralax soon after the surgery? Adding a dose everyday to your diet will help keep things regular. I'm on iron pills so am taking it now (i'm pre-op), but was hoping to continue it after as well just to keep the GI open.

sounds daft, but I have a bad cold... what meds can I take?

Lap Band removed after 1 month-HELP!
peatie replied to jamigirl67's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Find out if you can apply that 5K they don't want to refund toward a sleeve. ?? It's worth a shot. Why did you decide on a lap band anyway? I"m surprised so many people seem to go that route even though there's a fair amount of issue w/the band long-term (not chastising your decision..just wondering out loud why Dr's seem to continue providing the procedure w/o a conscious to the patient long term). -
After getting a CBC, I am painfully low in Iron (borderline anemic), low in VitD, low in B12. It was recommended I take: - Iron pill daily - VitD rx was given for 5000 units once/week - B12 daily - Multivitamin So, my questions are... 1. just HOW much iron should i be taking daily? I'm getting 100% in the MVI and about 300% in the iron pill. Is this good? Too much? 2. Is the Vit D once week adequate or should I be taking a daily one as well? 3. I am getting 100% of B12 in the MVI, is it necessary to take a separate B12 as well? 4. Does anyone know how long it takes for the body to 'catch up to speed' so to speak regarding stores? I understand that if you overtake most Vitamins, you just pee it out...so without wasting $$, I was wondering your take on it considering what you've been told or what you know. It'll be two weeks before my return visit to the nut. Thanks if you've read this far.

chew, chew, chew - is it like this for you?
peatie replied to 1-4-Many's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I heard that if you really need some moisture to help with a dry bit of food, you can suck on an ice chip to help. But this is what i read...as I haven't been sleeved yet. -
I hear ya..my mom has some sundresses from the 70's that say size 12. It's about the size of a six today. Crazy!
-
getting sleeved today!
peatie replied to sleeveorbust's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck and hope to hear it was uneventful! -
B/c you see the sun 3x a year. lol I prob will have to take vitD forever too.. which isn't bad considering the alternative could be skin cancer.

What is WRONG WITH ME???
peatie replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry you're having a bad day. I wonder if food used to bring you endorphins that made you feel good and now you're not getting them, kwim? I am wondering if I will have the same issue too..because i generally DO love food and find satisfaction in what i eat. Theoretically it's wonderful to not 'have' to be hungry or think about food all the time, but if it's not even ENJOYABLE part of the time, it's kind of like grieving, if that makes any sense at all. There's a comfort that's lost. Hope you get past this stage soon and maybe once you are able to eat all foods, you'll begin to enjoy the process a little more. Chin up, you're moving along great. -
Thanks for the info...off to buy some VitD for after my rx runs out. Did pick up some B12 sublingual at costco today...yummy! And thanks for the tip on iron.. all i knew is it could make you constipated..so i'll be sure to take earlier in the day w/some food. I was told about getting the B12 sublingual from Trader Joes, but I was at Costco today and saw some, so picked it up.. it's cherry flavored and very yummy! I did read an article that it was better absorbed sublingual...but haven't delved too much into it, so not sure on the census.

It probably has a ton of Protein in it to help keep your hair healthy, but your hair falls out because of the "trauma" to your body during surgery and cannot be kept because you use the horse shampoo. kwim? Your hair goes into the 'dormant' stage and finally falls out at some point. Same concept when pregnant..which is why it feels so thick while pregnant than falls out after giving birth. Not everyone is the same, so some people's bodies don't react the same to the surgery and their hair is not affected. I know after chemo some people have different hair growth patterns, etc... My uncle had thinning grey hair before having chemo and then grew a thick brown curly main after.
