Mushy Foods For A Picky Eater...
5DoxieMom replied to missemy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Make some soup with sweet potatoes and brocolli. Start with Knorr's french onion dry soup mix in the packet, peel and dice a sweet potato or two, when they're kind of soft add the brocolli, cook till its super tender, thicken it with a little flour and water paste. After it bubbles for a minute or 2 then turn off the heat and throw in chunks of cheddar cheese. Its really good. -

Wondering When My Weight Loss Will Kick In.
5DoxieMom replied to sentos's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sentos, I can relate. I was sleeved on 3/12/12, and have only lost 12 lbs. It is so frustrating. But, on the other hand, that's an average of 3 lbs a week, which isn't too bad. 3 lbs a week over 6 months is about 75 lbs, now that sounds good. At least the scale is moving in the right direction, prior to surgery, it always moved in the wrong direction. Chin up, we'll do fine. -
I like the Premier Brand protein bars at Costco. They have 30 grams of protein, and come in a big double box....I think it works out to 87 cents a bar. I think the premier brand of ready to drink shake is the best tasting too.

I Threw Cake In The Garbage!
5DoxieMom replied to Foxbins's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I guess all you guys should get some chickens. All food that gets thrown out at my house, goes to the chickens. They eat everything (except onions, orange peels and jello), then I don't feel like I'm wasting it -
The bad taste in your mouth/bad breath is from being in ketosis, from a low carb diet.

Dr. Rodolpho Arreola At Hamot?
5DoxieMom replied to RettaB's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Just make sure that you research the surgeon you pick. If he doesn't have 50-75 of these procedures under his belt, I would move on. Plenty of people on this site have used surgeons in Mexico and have done great. My surgeon is in Oregon, and when I met with him, I flat out asked him how many of these has he done, and how many had problems. I was able to track down several people who had used him. Check out weight loss surgery support groups in your area, go there and ask questions about this surgeon, at least that's a place to start. Good luck. -
Over a week seems like a long time to keep the drain in, usually drains are removed 2-4 days after a surgery. But, Its not unheard of. I think the pain is probably your body's reaction to having a foreign object sticking out of it. Your skin is probably trying to heal around it. As long as you keep the insertion site clean and dry, and you don't notice any increase in drainage where the tube is inserted, then you should be OK. One would think that drainage in the bulb should be very minimal by now. So you'll probably be fine. But, on the other hand....that's why on call docs are there.

I hated them all, too. One that was tolerable for me, although not unflavored powder, was Isopure ready to drink. Its available at GNC, a little expensive, but 40 grams of protein per bottle, and it's a clear liquid (for that stage). It leaves a puckery, dry taste in your mouth, but doesn't have a nasty taste going down.

How Long Were You In The Hospital?
5DoxieMom replied to madambones's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon does VSG in an out patient facility. I checked in at 0800, walked out at 230 in the afternoon. Went to the radiology dept at the hospital the next morning for esophogram, then to the surgeon's office for IV fluids. The following day back to the surgeon's office to have my drain removed. I was happy that I got to do it this way, because then I could sleep in my own bed at night with my doggies. -
Abdominal binder, I think is what they call it. I didn't have one, but I know it would've helped.

yaaaaay! Keep us posted. I'm excited for you. It was just two short weeks ago for me, and I remember the nervousness and excitement...and the extremely high BP the morning of surgery! Best of luck to you, I know you'll do great.

I went back at 10 days. I still have swelling and soreness in my belly, especially if I do too much. I had my surgery at an outpatient surgery center. Check in at 0800, walked out at 230 in the afternoon. First couple days were rough. I didn't take any pain meds after day 3. Went the next day for my leak test, esophogram (the only time I vomited). Went the day after that to have my drain taken out. Keep reading all the experiences of people, they vary greatly.

In my opinion, an addiction lasts for a lifetime. I, too, am addicted to food. I am only 2 weeks out from surgery, but so far, I can tell you that my relationship with food is changing. I really liked sweets prior to surgery, sugar was a real problem for me. Right now, the thought of something sweet grosses me out. I hope this feeling stays with me! Also, now, after a few teaspoons of soup, or other soft (allowable) foods, I get a sharp pain in my chest. So, I stop eating before I get to that point. I think the pain signal going to my brain is helping with my food addiction, it's hopefully 'retraining' my brain that too much food causes pain, not pleasure. If that makes any sense at all. I'm just so hopeful that this surgery is the answer for me....I was just at the end of my rope, and becoming less healthy every year. I would agree that counseling, or OA couldn't hurt.

Different amounts of time for different people and/or surgeons. You're in the right place. Read all the posts that you can, ask all of the questions that you want. This site is a great source for support.

According to my surgeon the big incision on the left has a really deep internal suture from where they took the stomach out. Yeah, it'll be sore for awhile, when the swelling goes down, it will feel better. I'm 2 weeks out and still swollen and sore, can't really cough or sneeze. Try a heating pad on your tummy.

Single And Sleeved-Post Op Suggestions
5DoxieMom replied to Cmullinvegas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't stock up too much before surgery, your tastes change so much. Some of the shakes I could drink before surgery, I couldn't tolerate after. I also like the Premier brand shakes from Costco, they're not so thick and smelly. Another one that I am able to get down, are the Isopure ready to drink from GNC. They kind of leave a nasty dry taste in your mouth, but at least they don't have a nasty smell. I've never tried the Isopure powder. If you have a GNC or Vitamin world near you, you could go there a week or so after surgery, and they will let you try stuff. And if you buy something there, and get it home, they will let you return it if you don't like it (GNC, not sure about Vitamin World). Good luck everyone! I'm only 2 weeks out, so I can't say much more, except that I am still a little sore, especially on days when I do too much. Still hurts to cough. But, I'm over 50 so don't heal as fast as you young ones! -
Debly, I, too, had a relatively low BMI, around 36. I've dieted all my life, losing and gaining. Every decade that went by, I managed to pack on an additional 10 lbs. I never thought I was "that fat" and I thought I carried it well, because I didn't look as heavy as what the scale said. In my 30's, the dr would say I needed to lose weight. In my 40's the dr would say I need to lose weight. When I turned 50, the dr said that I needed to be on BP and cholesterol meds because of my weight. I went on a serious diet and couldn't lose, went to several hypnotists and couldn't lose, in fact, I gained more. So, I opted for surgery. I don't know how old you are, but believe me, age works against a person. When I was younger, this surgery wasn't available. I wish it had been. Although, I'm not too far out (3/12/12), I know I'm going to be glad I had this done. Better late than never. From what I understand, the hair loss is temporary, and you can do supplements to minimize it. And, since the health aspect of losing weight is the most important thing to me, I think....no one has ever had a stroke from thin hair! So, hair loss is unfortunate, but secondary of concern to me, at least.

I'm curious for the different ages on here
5DoxieMom replied to jamie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 51, better late than never. But RNY never seemed right for me, and just recently found out about the sleeve. Last year, I lost 200 lbs of ugly fat through a divorce. So I figured it was time to get rid of that last 100 lbs, so I could feel good and be healthier while starting the next chapter of my life. -
Worried About Recovery Room Pain & Nausea
5DoxieMom replied to slimthickens's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Its fresh in my mind, since my surgery was last Mon. The first second you wake up, it feels like a truck hit you, but the nurses are right there with your IV pain meds. I was constantly getting coached to take deep breathes, as my O2 sats monitor kept beeping. My doc gave an RX for scopolamine patch to put on prior to surgery. It helps with nausea, but really dries you out. My nausea was minimal. But they have the IV nausea meds available too. The whole thing is kind of miserable, but short lived. I first woke up after surgery at 11:20 (clock right in front of me on the wall). At 2:30 in the afternoon, I was walking out of the place. Just had a little trouble getting in the car. Moving very slooooooowlly. -
Need Help For Post Op Diet Please...
5DoxieMom replied to SkinnyMom2b's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I thought the nectar was Ok prior to surgery, after surgery, I can't tolerate it, its just too sweet. I wouldn't order too much. If I could do it again. I would get just enough stuff on hand for about a week, then go to GNC and try stuff....after surgery. My tastes have changed so much. Don't know if it will last but the thought of sweet stuff turns my stomach. Best of luck to you. -
Anyone Getting Sleeved On March 12 ?
5DoxieMom replied to LaceyD's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm doing well. Today I'm able to get in all my fluids. My left side hurts bad enough to have the heating pad on it right now. I was out doing gardening and stuff outside. I probably overdid it a little. It seems like I do that every day. I haven't weighed myself, I know I am still really swollen. If you do the math for weight loss...3500 calories = 1 lb. So as soon as you burn up, and/or eat 3500 calories less than your body needs, then you lose a pound. To me, I don't see how anyone can lose more than 3 or 4 lbs a week. But I know they do. I also know that the faster you lose it, the harder it is on the gall bladder. I think its better to look at it over the long term. I will be thrilled if I am 50 or 60 lbs lighter by this time next year. (But really 100 down is what I really want). What kind of protein drinks are you guys finding you like? I'm finding out the stuff I liked prior to surgery, I don't like now. I can't handle much sweet. Isopure ready to drink is really going down the best for me. -
You've got to do what's right for you. I had a BMI of 36.5. The doctor has always been after me to lose weight, telling me it's just about time to start on BP and cholesterol meds. Over the summer, I walked, walked, walked and ate good. I lost 6 lbs, then gained 8 back. Sound familiar to every single person out there? Anyway, I'm 51, not getting any younger, and just decided it was time to do something. So bottom line, do what's best for you. Weigh the risks, high BP?, high cholesterol? vs. healthy weight. And, things don't get better as you age. (sorry)

Shoulder pain can be related to the anesthesia. My surgery was on the 12th also. I had the back pain yesterday, today its gone. My surgeon said on my left is a very deep internal suture where they removed the stomach, and it will cause discomfort for quite awhile. My left side is sure uncomfortable, but not enough to take meds. If I sit still, I feel no pain at all.

You should contact your surgeon. I don't believe that a leak could be detected with ultrasound. When leak tests are done post surgery, it is done with a barium swallow. Did you have a leak test after surgery? Where are you at?
