Teeth And Gums Feel Weird
IowaAndy replied to ariesgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is an excellent question.....I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2012 and as of late I have noticed that my teeth and gums are becoming more sensitive and that my gums are receeding. Anyone else have any issues with their teeth and gums since surgery. -
Has Anyone Gone To Mexico To Be Sleeved?
IowaAndy replied to sarah nelson's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am sorry that you changed your mind and switched from Dr F Garcia after reading a post on here by "ONE" person. If that was the case most of us would have never had WLS at all. There are rumors and stories about all the surgeons and I think that some people think they have an "agenda". I don't have a clue as to what Lacie said regarding Dr Garcia but I found him to be fantastic. Just as those who have had surgery with Dr Kelly have thought that they had the best experience. If you did not do your research on the surgeon and are going to pick because of what you read with nothing to back up the story......well then I wish you the best experience with the surgeon that you chose for your surgery. I wish you all the best. Just wish that people on this forum would stop trashing surgeons. -
Sitting In My Hospital Room.
IowaAndy replied to MoogleQueen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations to all of the new sleevers. I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 so just before Christmas. Everyone said to me "Are you nuts....it's Christmas and think of all that food that you will not be able to eat." Well I did think about all that food that I would miss but then I thought of all those holidays that I overate and had too many sweets and just one more bite. That is what got me to where I was in my life and I was not happy. I survived Christmas and New Years and I will survive Easter just like all of you will. It is just another day and another meal but it is also Easter will be the first day of the rest of your lives. Enjoy your family, drink your fluids and have some protein. -
I Had My Surgery Done On Wednesday The 4Th And My New Stomach Has A Spiraling Issue. Has Anyone Else Had This Problem?
IowaAndy replied to MiTurner247's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Not sure what you mean by "Spiraling issue" Is this more nausea and upset stomach. It could be acid and you might want to speak to your doctor about medication for this before you are discharged or if you are already out call him. -

Do You Ever Feel Like Telling Fat People To Get Surgery?
IowaAndy replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have thought that many times. I hear people say "Oh she is such a pretty girl, too bad she is so overweight". Well not that I was ever pretty but I was always overweight. Part of it was my way of dealing with stress and life. I guess I think about others that are overweight but then I think.....maybe if I walked a day in their shoes I would understand why they are as heavy as they are. I just keep quiet and is someone that I know is a close enough friend I will talk to them about my surgery and how much of a change it has made in my life. This is a hard decision for everyone and I know that it was a major decision for me to have the surgery. It only took me 56 years to get it done. -
I think mine was about 6 days post op and it was more like a rabbit turd. I did have an issue with some constipation after that point until I started to put a scoop of benefiber in my morning shake. I had surgery on Dec 11, 2011 and still start the day out with a choc shake. I was listenint to Dr Oz the other day and he said that you body does best if you start off with a breakfast high in protein.

Have never been married so can not help you with the divorce issue. I know that one of the many reasons that I have never settled down had to do with me being overweight..........sad really and now I am so set in my ways that somedays I think the dog wants to leave.

For Older-Aged Sleevers: Do You Look Older Now?
IowaAndy replied to Ssilian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 56 when I had my surgery last Dec and will be 57 this Nov. I do not think that I look older but then I was not having surgery to look younger. I was having surgery to prolong and improve the quality of my life. I certainly do not think that I look any older and people have told me that I am looking good and younger. I think it has a lot to do with the type of skin you have and how much sun damage you have accumulated up to this point of your life. Embrace yourself for who you are. Who knows maybe the next thing will be a facelift in Mexico. -
Drain Removal Question
IowaAndy replied to amsterjonathon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine taken out on Wednesday morning after having surgery on a Monday. I would not say that you need a pain pill. It was more of a sharp pain and then it was gone. It takes just a few seconds for them to take it out. Think that it is more scary than it was painful. -
Sorry to hear that you had a hernia but it was good that he was able to repair it when you had your surgery. I know that you are going to have a couple rough days with the extra surgery but know that you will come through all of this. And 2 weeks of liquids is really not that bad when you think of the long term benefits. Please keep me posted as to your progess.

I agree that those who have insurance policies that cover WLS are very lucky. My insurance refused to pay for my lapband removal or for the sleeve. Here in Iowa they wanted $40,000 and this would have had to have been done in 2 seperate surgeries 3 months apart. Well there was no way that I could afford that kind of money so I had the band to sleeve revision in Tijuana, Mexico for $6,000 and I have not had any problems since the surgery. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I know that I could not have been able to afford $17,000 either and would not go that far into debt.
-
Wow,,,,,congratulation on your rapid approval. As for you insurance if you have a $500 deductible then you would pay the first $500. You say that you have already pain $200.....curious as to what you paid this for. You office copays or visits to the psych do not count toward this. Also remember that post op you have a global period after your surgery. This means that any visits to your surgeon for approx 90 days you will not have to make any office copays. After that time period you will be back to paying your regular copays. I would call your insurahce company and they can tell you exactly how much you have paid toward your deductible and what the cost will be to you out of pocket. Best of luck on your surgery.

How Far Out Can You Get A Leak?
IowaAndy replied to jhansen71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked that of my doctor and was told that it can happen as far out from surgery as 6 - 8 months. Think that is why they give you such a strict diet to follow. At least my surgeon did but I know many surgeons that do not. I know I am not taking any chances. -
I have been through a couple of stalls out and I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011. I am currently in another stall and hoping that I can get the scale to move again. I know that this can be defeating as the longest one I had lasted about 2 1/2 weeks. I agree that the scale at times can be a hinderence. Do not give up on your journey and just make sure that you get all of your protein and fluids.

New Around Here And Hoping To Get This Band Out!
IowaAndy replied to iwannabslim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Welcome. I too had a band for a few years and lost around 85 pounds and then just stopped. I could not have any more water added as I was at the max fill. I was constantly vomiting due to food getting stuck due to the high fill of my band. I went to the doctor after about 6 months or no weight loss and talked to him. I still had another 100 pounds to go. He said that due to the amount of weight that I had to lose initially that I should have probably gone for the sleeve in the beginning and not had the band. Well it is a little late now. At the time I had the band insurance was only paying for the band or the bypass and I knew that I did not want the bypass. My insurance denied my request for the band removal or the sleeve and they wanted over $40,000 here in the US and it would have had to been done in 2 surgeries about 3 months apart. There was no way that I could afford this so I started to check into other options and found surgery in Mexico. After doing much research and talking to several people on the phone I decided that this was my only option at last winter. I called and scheduled surgery with Dr F Garcia in Tijuana, Mexico. I bought my ticket and on Dec 10, 2011 I left for San Diego. They picked me up and took me to Mexico. I can not say enough wonderful things about Dr Garcia, his team and the staff at Mi Hospital. I would do it again in a heart beat. They took out my band and did the sleeve in the same operation. I hope that you have good luck with your insurance. Keep pushing ahead. -
Just Saw My Post-Op Diet
IowaAndy replied to esheldon76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bethany1987.................I read the posts also and I do not think that anyone including myself was being mean. I for one was being realistic. On one of my many weight loss journeys I actually went on a liquid diet for 8 months. I had 5 chocolate shakes a day and had to take nasty tasting potassium supplement that made the liquid that you take for the lead test a treat. I did this for 8 months of no food and just skim milk, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. And I know that I am not the most committed person on the world but I did it because it was my health that was at stake. I lost over 85 pounds on this diet but as soon as I went back to eating more normal food the weight was back within 2 years and I was even heavier. Sometimes the truth hurts to hear. People post on her to get feedback and if at times feelings get hurt well you just need to pick yourself up and go on. I have also had things said to me and about me that hurt but I am still here and not going anywhere. What really gets me are all of those who start off and in the first mont.............first month are cheating and eating things that they should not. If I was a little harsh in my previous post I am sorry you felt offended. That is not my goal but I just want people to realize that this is a LIFE CHANGE and not a quick fix. This take work and if you do not have what it takes to put in the work then I say "Do not waste your time and money" -
Carnie Wilson On The Today Show This Morning
IowaAndy replied to something2think's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I applaude her for all of her trials and going public but the lapband. Come on......that thing sucks and she will end up having that taken out. I do not know anyone who has been happy with their band. It was the happeist moment in my life when mine was removed. Do not miss the vomiting at all. How about any of you other former band patients. -
Just Saw My Post-Op Diet
IowaAndy replied to esheldon76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Obviously if this diet scares you then you might want to rethink the surgery. This is a life change not a quick fix. Also you said that if you could only eat liquids for 30 days you could lose the weight. Well then what has kept you from doing just that. We have all faced these same questions and dilemas and have failed miserably. Time to step up and take control of your life. -
Craving Chocolate ...help
IowaAndy replied to nancy_marie_00's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just bought a hershey choc bar and ate it. It took care of that craving. Just do not buy the jumbo pack. You can not win the battle without treating yourself every now and then. This is not like "Oh I can never have one of those now that I have had surgery." -
I personally do not believe in the sauna. It does very little in the way of weight loss. I would prefer to get actual exercise and sweat naturally.

Colonoscopy - Horrendous & Terrifying
IowaAndy replied to lash44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They have come a long way in the prep area. Is this the only doctor in your area that does the colonoscopy. I had to drink and 8 oz bottle of magnesium citrate around 8pm the night before. Then around 10 I took 3 little pills but do not recall the name of them. I was on a clear liquid diet that day before but could have anything as long as it did not have red food color in it. I would check around. Magnesium citrate can be purchased over the counter at Walgreens or a local drug store. -
Hormone Grehlin Also Responsible For Memory?
IowaAndy replied to betterthanbefore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not noticed any change since my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 but I will certainly do some research and see if I can find out more. I had not heard anything about this so find this very interesting. Thanks for you post. -
Help....12 Days Post
IowaAndy replied to HopeThruFaith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weighing is going to freak you out then stop weighing so often. If you are eating a small amount keep a food log to track your calories, water intake and protein intake. As long as you are getting all of the water and protein and not comsuming tons of calories you will continue to lose. Some people can become obsessed with the scale so I suggest that you not weight everyday and maybe just once a week. -
