Anyone Not Tell Family Or Friends?
minnie20 replied to max206's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok here goes. I was sleeved on 2/13/12 and choose to tell just my family and close friends. My decision not to tell wasn't because I was ashamed. All my life I failed at every diet I did and if i didn't succeed with the sleeve I didn't want to hear negative feedback. I am now 8 months post-op and 80 lbs lost. When ever asked how I was losing weight I never lied just choose not to tell all the details. I always told them I saw a nutritionist who advised me how to eat and started to walk and excercise. I am finding it harder as time goes on because of the weight loss and am tempted at times to tell. I think on my 1 year anniversary I may let my secret out of the bag and explain to everyone that I choose to keep it a secret until I knew I was successful at it. -

Great Job!! Way to go!! -
It will all get better. I felt the exact same way after my surgery, questioning whether I made a mistake being sleeved but everything you are feeling will go away.

Is anyone experiencing large amounts of hair loss. I had my surgery on 2/1 and for 4 months I was fine but now my hair is coming out in clumps. I was told this may happen but it wasn't too common with people who had the sleeve done. It is more common when the bypass is done. If anyone has the same problem what are they doing for it and will it grow back. Please help, I am freaking out.

Good Luck to you! Don't be nervous, just be excited because this will be one of the best decisions you have made. I am 5 months post-op and am loving the new me. Keep us posted on your jouney. -
thanks everyone New Orleans lady, I try to get in the required amount of protein which my doctor wants 75-80 per day. I start the day with a protein shake ( 30 grms of protein) then try to get in at least 20 grams at lunch and dinner. It is just difficult as to some days I can't. jailyn, I asked my nutritionist about the protein and hair loss and she said it is common for it to start about 3-4 months post op but once our bodies adjust to the rapid weight loss it will grow back. Also she stressed to make sure we get in all our protein. readyfora change, I am going to start the Biotin. My nutritionist suggested it also.

Why Won't My Brain Let Me See The Loss?
minnie20 replied to Dooter's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Having the same problem. I had my surgery the same day as you, am down 61 lbs. and still look in the mirror and don't see the change. I I am down 4 pant sizes and all of my clothes literally fall off but I still see the old me. I hope this sickness goes away soon. I have also thought about making an appointment with the pychologist that I had to see before the surgery. Let me know if you see the light, lol. Good Luck on the rest of your journey. -
wow that is great! How much weight have you lost and when were you sleeved?

Fantastic ! You look great! Keep it up. -
I was just wondering if anyone out there who has had the sleeve have made the desicion not to tell people that they had it done. I work and choose not to tell anyone at work. This decision was made because I know a few people that have had weight loss surgery and were not successful at it. I just felt that if I didn't succeed I would be one of them and I have failed so many times at trying to lose weight that I didn't want to a failure again.

The Mental Side Of Food Issues
minnie20 replied to Back~To~Amy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 16 weeks post-op and down 56 lbs. I will tell you the journey does get easier. I too, always believed that I was addicted to food. My story is very similiar to yours, good childhood, great marriage, super life but overweight because of my addiction to food. I think the mental addiction to food is still with you after being sleeved but the fact that you can not eat the way you use to or would like to puts a stop to it. Sometimes if I am craving a certain food I do indulge in it but find my self dissappointed because it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Or maybe the fact that you can not physically eat the way we did in the past helps the mental addiction fail. Good luck in your journey and kepp me posted as to how you are doing. -
I drink the Premeir Protein Shakes ( chocalate is my favorite) 30 grams of protein in each one and you can buy them at Costco or most health food stores.

To all the people who do not agree with my decision to not tell every person that I come in contact with, well who are you to judge my decision. I did not come on here and start bashing you for revealing your personal medical decision, WLS, so don't bash me. I have told the people in my life that matter the most and to everyone else, its none of their business. I am not living a lie, just choosing who to tell and who not to. Throughout my life I have had other personal medical issues and I did not choose to broadcast them either. And I am no way embarressed about having WLS. It is one of the best choices I ever made but it is MY life and I choose to live it MY way. And to the person 'Tell who you want or don't tell, but don't try to redefine the meaning of the word LIE just so you can feel better and make everyone else here feel better. Ok here goes- lie/lī/ a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood. I am not redefining the word lie to make myself feel better. It is bully people like you who bully others into having to think like you. Last time I looked this is a free country for all to live their lives the way they want. I have not made any false statements or intended to deceive anyone or intentionally told non-truth information. I just do not give the personal details to people who I feel have no business knowing my personal life. -

I also choose not to tell my co-workers except for the immediate 3 people that I am also friends with. I had my surgery 2/13. My family and a few close friends outside of work also know but noone else. It is nobody's business what you do. I just felt that people would judge me if I didn't succeed. My surgeon also told me that if I felt more comfortable not telling anyone at work that I could just tell them I was having abdominal hernia surgery. The length of hospital stay and the amount of time needed to be out of work coincides with hernia surgery. I am now 4 months post-op, down 56 lbs and feel great. People are daily telling me how good I look and how am I losing the weight and I tell them that I went to a nutritionist ( not a lie ) and I am on a high protein, low carb, low calorie diet.( also not a lie ) I also tell them that I eat much smaller portions ( again, not a lie ) I just omit the surgery part which is not lying just not revealing all the details. Good Luck with whatever desicion you make about your surgery but I just wanted to let you know it is possible not to tell people. Afterall, you wouldn't reveal personal information to everyone you came across so just think of your surgery like that. -
lizzy Hang in there. You sound exactly the way that I was at about the same time post-op. I too had a stall in weight loss but believe me it will get better. I had several moments when I thought I had made a mistake by getting sleeved. The fluids were hard to get down but take it from me, make sure you do because I managed to get myself dehydrated. It will all get better and before you know it you will feel better. Try to get out and start walking. That may help give you energy. Good luck!

I was sleeved on 2/13/2012 with a low BMI similiar to you. I was told that my BMI wasn't high enough for the surgery but I insisted on having a consultation with the surgeon and after speaking with him I was scheduled for the sleeve. I did also have HBP which helped my case. Insurance did cover the procedure. I am now 4 months post-op and feeling great. I have lost a total of 56 lbs. Sometimes I feel like the weight isn't coming off fast enough but my doctor says I am doing fine and losing accordingly. I wish you good luck on your journey. Also, I wouldn't say there are less complications to occur when your BMI is low since I did experience some. But it was all worth it

Fantastic job! You sound like you are on the right track. I too am 4 months post-op and am down 54 lbs. I don't have my post-op appoint with my surgeon till 6/28. I hope to be at 60 lbs loss by then.

I am surprised your doctor is allowing you back into the classroom after 2 weeks. I also work in the classroom and my doctor had me stay out of work for 4 weeks. But I do agree with Tinkertoyz, too soon to be that far away in case a problem arises.

Amount Of Time Off Work?
minnie20 replied to Thinner Peace's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was off for 4 weeks and it was good that I had not planned on going back sooner because my first week I came across some complications which would have prevented me from work. -

Everyone loses differently. The heavier you are and the more weight you have to lose will cause you to lose quicker then someone who has less to lose. I am 10 weeks post op and have lost 48 lbs. I sometimes too feel that I should be losing more but then realize that it is just good to be losing anything. Kewep up the good work and try not to compare yourself to others.
