    Mexico, Really?

I was in the predicament that you are asking about and I CHOSE to go to Dr. Aceves. There was a doctor in the LA area who was going to do my revision for the same price as Dr. Aceves. After researching and really thinking about it and talking to my loved ones I decided to still go to Dr. Aceves in Mexico. EVERYTHING I have read on him is excellent and he is the man when it comes to revisions. Insurance would not cover but I could have stayed in the US for the same price.

    Any May Sleevers Yet?

Hey everyone! Can't believe May is actually here. It felt like such a long time when I scheduled my surgery back in February. Glad to hear that all of you that have had surgery already are recovering well. I have been kind of lucky because my pre-op only consists of a Atkins like week of eating. Giving up the wine has been harder. lol Anyhow, starting to get a little nervous that they are going to open me up and see that my band has eroded or something and won't be able to do surgery. I hope and pray this does not happen.
  3. 5 more days! Can't believe it is almost here.

  4. Spending the day at Tahoe with my honey. 13 more days. :)

  5. I bought it for my kindle from his website. You buy it and then it shows up as a file that you download to the kindle. They have instructions on how to do it on the site.

    Getting Easier

I feel that way too. I keep thinking, what if I don't lose weight? What if I'm the one who loses only 10 lbs?!?! Thanks Cheri for that great post. Very encouraging.
  8. What a beautiful day!

    Any May Sleevers Yet?

Yes I am. May 11th is coming so quickly. Neva - you are May 11th too? THank you everyone fr the encouraging words. They help so much.
  10. I need some advice and to vent a little. I am scheduled with Dr. Aceves for sleeve revision on May 10th. I have researched the hell out of him and have found nothing bad at all. Part of the prerequisite was for me to get my band unfilled. This past weekend I had my appointment with my American bariatric surgeon (who did not place my lap-band) and he unfilled me. He asked why I was getting unfilled and I told him I was having revision in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. He then proceeded to scare the **** out of me by telling me stories of patients he has known of who have had leaks months afterward from getting surgery in Mexico and/or dying on the OR table. He said getting a virgin sleeve or lap-band is fine in Mexico but begged and pleaded with me not to get a revision. He said that it is incredibly risky and dangerous and that I will be screwed if something happens to me once I get home. I talked to him about it more and he said that since the doc is not looking at my lap band beforehand that ought to give me a clue that I am not in good hands. He said they will just work around any complications and that could make it worse. He also said he could do my revision (here in the US) for the same price as Dr. Aceves is charging me. I completely agreed to all of this and have been talking to his office and scheduler. It has been three days and I am still waiting to hear from them on what hospital he will perform the surgery at and exactly how much. It will be one of three hospitals in the LA area. Anyhow, I am not sure what to do. I am pretty sure Dr. Aceves has more experience with revisions than my doc does but the thought of staying in the US for the same price is tempting as well. I know Dr. Aceves is a truly capable and fantastic doctor. I have read a lot of reviews on my US doc and he is very good as well. I don't think he has the experience that Aceves does though but on the flip side I could stay in the US. HELP!!! ADVICE PLEASE!!! So scared and confused now.
  11. Thank you to everyone for your responses. My boyfriend and I have been going back and forth over this for almost a week now. Something just tells me to stay with Dr. Aceves. I don't know what it is. It is just a feeling I have. I am pretty sure that is what I am going to do. I feel he is very qualified with revisions and Nina has been an angel throughout this entire process. Also, the staff of the US office has been really passive when it comes to me and my worries and scheduling this surgery.

    Any May Sleevers Yet?

I am scheduled with Dr. Aceves on May 11 but I am so confused right now. I am going to post about my confusion under the general board and see what kind of responses I get. I was all set and ready to go but this past weekend my American bariatric doc scared the **** out of me so now I am wondering if I am making the right decision.
  13. Back from NYC. Home sweet home.

  14. Hello everyone and thank you for giving me so much help and inspiration as I start this journey. I am a 39 year old single mom of two kids (18 and 6). I divorced about 1.5 years ago and am just starting to now be happy again. I got the lap-band from Dr. Ortiz in TJ back in December of 2009. I have to admit that my head wasn't in the game. I hate the damn thing and am so tired of getting stuck and puking. Just started researching having the band removed and maybe getting bypass. That is when I came across all of the sleeve info. I researched docs. and since my insurance won't touch WL surgery with a 10 foot poll I chose to venture to Mexico again. This time I am going to see Dr. Aceves. Dr. Ortiz was fantastic but after reading all of the stories about Aceves being "the man" when it comes to revisions I have decided to go with him. Anyhoo my surgery is scheduled for May 11 and I can't wait. Until that day comes I am going to read, read and read some more and make sure I do it right this time. I got banded at 212 lbs. and now I am at 231. UGH! Thank you for the support and all of the information, I look forward to sharing all of our experiences together on this amazing journey.
  15. Just realized that I need to find out how to take meds immediately following surgery??? I take fluoxetine capsules. If we are on clear liquids for days after surgery how do we take our meds? Crush them up in the clear liquid?
  16. Anyone ever wean off anti-depressants? I have been on them for about 4-5 years now and would love to stop taking them eventually. I don't know why. I guess I just want to try and make myself feel better without medicine. I have tried a few times but then I slowly feel the anxiety and "snappiness" of my attitude come back after about a week. Then I start back again. I am hoping about a year after surgery I can try and successfully get off the meds. I wanted to try and do it before surgery but I read a lot about how learning to eat again can be a very emotional event so I don't even want to mess with that situation. lol Anyhow, if any of you have ever done this i would love to hear from you. Please share anything, the good and the bad. Thank you.
  17. I've seen a few people on here name their sleeves. I thunk that is so funny but cute. I think I'll name mine Sleevester.
  18. I am choosing GSV or RNY because the thought of rerouting my intestines scared the hell out of me. Also I was worried about malabsorption issues. I know a few people who have had RNY (and kept off the weight) but they always seem to look somewhat unhealthy.

    Self Pay

Are you going to Mexico or staying in the US? I imagine you would have to pay for the complications yourself. I am worried about this too. I am going to Mexico next month.
  23. I am interested to see what others have to say too. Drinking wine is my vice now and I have to say that I do drink more than I should. I am going to stop two weeks before surgery to make sure I do not double shock my body. If it comes down to it and after I am sleeved I feel the need to keep drinking I will seek help. There is no way in hell I am going to ruin a $10,000 surgery (out of my own pocket) on calories from alcohol. Jimmy - it is great that you are thinking about this now beforehand. I would look in to maybe having one low calorie drink once in a while. I have heard that bacardi and diet is low carb and has the least amount of calories. Good luck to you.
  24. Ate too much tonight. UGH!
