Surgery Scheduled For April 12Th!
gingerwale replied to Passionatehrt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome! Your post op diet depends on your doctor... I find that I have quickly grown bored of shakes... And I've had to mix it up. If you lay in three weeks worth you may end up stocked up on something you can't ever stomach one more drop of! -
Probably Common Sense...but My 1St Fill Experience
gingerwale replied to ev1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Were any of the fills that resulted in regurgitation done under fluoroscopy? -
I drove at 48 hours, but I stopped my pain medication at 24 hrs. It was uncomfortable behind the wheel and with so much arm movement, but tolerable

Help With Setting Weight Loss Goals
gingerwale replied to sktatey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not only do I set mini goals for myself, I have given myself non food rewards for my efforts. I bought a plain charm bracelet for myself when I decided to get banded. For every goal I achieve, I am buying myself a new charm to add. I wear it every day. All I have to do is take a glance at it, or feel the weight on my wrist to recall my goals and how far I've come. I wear it on my right hand.... My "food reaching" hand... So every time I reach for something I shouldnt I'm reminded of my successes and this helps me to stay the course. -

What Should I Bring To My Lap Band Surgery In Mexico?
gingerwale replied to feliciadawn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Take slip on shoes, If you are going alone. Passport card If you have one (rather than passport, quicker border cross on return which you will appreciate). The hotel is beautiful wih many extra pillows for comfort. There is a Walmart right down the road if you forget anything. The door man will set you up with a cab driver that will take you, wait, and bring you back if needed. -

I was banded thursday. As a nurse it has always been drilled into my head that one must have protein to heal. The post op diet my dr gave me is 7 days of clear liquids, 7 days of full liquids, and then seven days of full liquids and protein shakes. Never any mushies, straight to regular diet after 21 days. I am concerned that 7 days of clear liquids will leave me at risk for poor healing... But then Again, I was Getting 80 to 100g of protein pre op... Is that enough to sustain? Thoughts, anyone?

I do fozzy. I believe it's the tissues knitting themselves back together, and inflammation of nerves. I support that area when I walk, change positions, or sit down or stand up from the toilet. Internal pressure pushes the area outwards, external pressure (hand, small pillow) helps to support the tissue

Congrats! I'm glad they snagged your gall bladder. That saved a trip back in in a few months. Gall bladders are notorious for going bad during weight loss. Welcome to the other side!

MY FIRST FILL WAS A NIGHTMARE
gingerwale replied to bandedbeauty11's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Emla will numb the area, I'm not sure it's lidocaine exactly but it's a "Caine" of some sort. It works well. Apply 45 min to 1 hr prior, lay Saran wrap over it. Wash your hands after unless you want numb fingers. We use Emla on baby boys who are going to be circumcised and they tolerate it pretty well -
It you restrict your carbs enough to induce ketosis, your appetite will likely be much decreased after 48 to 72 hours. That's the only way I survived. I did Atkins shakes three times a day. I added 1/2 serving of protein powder ( chocolate for chocolate, vanilla for vanilla) and I was in ketosis in about 48 hrs and the hunger was much less. My actual surgery took Less than five minutes he said. You can do this. Your surgery will go much quicker and recovery much easier if you persevere.

You're in my prayers! Please keep us updated, as a nurse I am very curious to hear the outcome. I have never read nor heard of this type of event!

I Was Ready To Got Back!
gingerwale replied to jackieu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I understood no advil or any other NSAID. They are extremely irritating to the gastric mucosa... And can cause erosion. Tylenol is your best bet. My md gave me some sublingual toradol which has helped, but I'm not sure if it would help you ten days out -
I flew in to San diego, was met promptly by the driver for dr. Otiz. Was taken to the hotel for the night. Hotel staff was very friendly. Put me in a cab to do some sightseeing and souveiner shopping before it was time for bed. The cab driver took me place to place and waited for me. This morning I met the hotel driver in the lounge. He took me to the surgery center where I met with the nutritionist, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, and nurse who drew my blood and started iv. In a matter of 45 minutes I was under, and then back awake, banded. I got up and walked about one hour after, but would have sooner if the staff had been available to escort me. I voided with the first walk, got some juice and Water. Was cleared to walk walk walk. Left the surgery center at 1pm with an rx for an antacid and toradol sublingual. Returned to hotel room. There is no incisional pain for me at all. I was down for a total of 15 minutes, he said the procedure itself literally took five minutes because I did well with the preop diet ( down 21lbs as of today! Woot! ) there is plenty of epigastric pressure ( right under my rib cage I the center) but I would only rate it at 5/10 at its worst. It goes down to 2/10 with walking. There were two other a Americans there getting the procedure down. There were two additional Americans in the lobby that had flown in for fills. Fills are included, but flouro is 100.00. If I book six to eight weeks out for my fills, plane tickets will run bout 200. So this is my plan. The md states that only 2 to 3 fills will be needed. In sitting here in a mix of elation and trepidation. Before going in this morning I had a brief moment of panic thinking maybe I had made a mistake, but I kept shoving the feeling down as a little devil on my shoulder. Now it's done. 21 days of liquids, now. One day at a time.
