    What Do You Tell People?

I agree with many of the others, Tell them your eating right and smaller portions and exercising BUT I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Since my very first visit with my family doctor I have been using Facebook and telling all my friends every step of my journey. I have not had the sugery yet, It should be in september but I have lost 55lbs so far just by cutting back my portions and eating the right stuff. I want to encourage others out there That really need it and are afraid. I've been asked if I was afraid what could happen if I got this done and I always say....No, I'm afraid what might happen if I DON"T get it done. Also I found out that so many of my Facebook friends had it done and it's like our own little support group now. So I'm very open about everything. But you will know what to say when they ask. Good luck!
  2. Hello All. My name is Mark and I'm new to this like many of you all were at one time. I have a question and I'm wondering if anybody ever heard of an insurance company denying somebody because they lost too much weight before surgery? My highest weight was 490lbs in november '11. I decided then for sure I had to do something! I cut my portion sizes drastic and I mean drastic and counted and watched everything I ate and drank!!! By the time I met with my family doctor and got everything set up my with my surgeon and everything I dropped 30lbs. My first intial weigh in was on March 22 and I weighed in at 460 with a BMI of 61. Here it is only 16 days later and my weight is 440. I just don't want the insurance company saying something like "Well it seems like he's doing well enough without the surgery, he doesn't need it". Has anybody ever heard anything like this? Thanks! Mark
  3. Thank you! I appreciate your response. I can't wait.
  4. Hey Ty, I haven't had my surgery yet, I'm still going through a 6 month waiting period but my surgery should be in september. I had many doubts and I'm still scared. But it finally hit me when a friend asked me if I was scared about having the surgery. I thought for a momnent and replied... "No! I'm scared if I DON'T have the surgery. I'm scared where I will be in the next couple years if I don't have it.". Good Luck!
  5. I thought I was doing all my homework and I had it set in my head that I wanted the Lapband but after talking to so many people I know that went through weight loss surgery and talking to my family doctor, everybody says go with the Roux-en-Y. Can you tell me what made YOU choose the Lapband over the other types of weight loss surgeries?
  6. Wow, Thanks everybody! I had my first class today and I guess I was expecting more because all I did was talk to the Nutritionist and weighed in. The one thing I worry about with the Band is slippage. Is that a common problem? And the problem I have with the RNY is, like what you all said, I don't want to be all cut up and another thing is there will be alot or skin hanging with the rapid weight loss. The decision to have weight loss surgery was a no brainer but what kind is much harder than I thought. I'm sure I will change my mind a million times. And knowing me, I'll be second guessing the decision even on the gurney but I'm sure what ever one I choose it will be the right one for me.
  7. Thank you Jlaroux and Allison. I agree with both of you. I didn't want to be gutted and I'm excited but kinda scared about losing so much so rapidly. Also I thought if anything would happen they can tighten, loosen or even remove the band. But being 450lbs (already lost 40lbs) so many people are steering me in the direction of the RNY. They say the weight will come off faster and thats what kinda scares me. I have my first class tomorrow and my first appointment with the surgeon on April 3rd. I guess I still have time to weigh (no pun intended) the pros and cons of each. Thank You!

    Scale Suggestion

Shues138, I bought a Taylor projection scale. You can get them from $50-$100. I think I pain about $65 for mine. I like it. It has a 500 or 550 lb limit. And at 480lbs I couldn't even see me feet, let alo.e the numberd on a scale so the projection is great. It shines the number up on the wall. It's light weight and the first couple times I stepped on it I thought it was going to snap in half but it holds me. And Thats saying something! Haha. And best of all, it is extremely accurate!
