Ok.. I don't have an official recipe, since I've been making these for 40 years. I just do it by rote. But I'll try and remember what I did when I made the last batch of 17 pasties. Crust.. 2 cups flour 1 Tsp. Salt 2/3 cup shortening Ice Water Mix flour, salt and 1/2 of the shortening into cornmeal size mixture. Then add the rest of the shortening and mix it into pea size mixture. Add ice water a tablespoon at a time until it is the right "feel". Should make a moist ball. Put in fridge for at least an hour. Pasty ingredients 5 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into dice size pieces 1 pound carrots cut into dice size pieces 3 onions chopped 1 medium rutabaga cut into dice size pieces 2# beef (I use stew meat already cut up) 1# pork (same as beef... I buy it already cut up for chop suey) (Some people use ground meat. I prefer the pieces) Mix all these things together and set aside. Roll out dough to the size of a salad plate. Put one cup of the mixture in the middle, add a small dab of butter, fold the dough over the meat mixture, crimp the edges, cut a breathing slit in the top. Brush on an egg wash. Place on cookie sheet and bake for 1 hour at 350. When you take them out, cover them for about 10 minutes with a towel. Then wrap in tin foil or eat right away. These freeze well. Bob loves them cold for Breakfast... go figure!!

57 Days till the Violet Reunion Bandiversary Bash and 1st ever Violet Baby Shower! -
Just got home and found them in my lycos email, but can't seem to open them up. I'm going to try on my other computer. It might be a problem with Lycos, though.

Jane! Thanks for the phone call. I'm anxious to read the article you found about the PAST ---ies. I just froze two of them to take to our son this weekend. We're going down to see our daughter in law receive her RN. Exciting times! She worked, went to school and took care of her family and now she's graduating. I'm SOOOOO proud of her!!! I got her a necklace with an RN pendant on it. Kris got her started on a Pandora bracelet. I started Kris on one after Grady was born. Off to choir and then dinner with friends. BBL..

Send me the pic, please. Kris will be here tomorrow and she can let me know what it is.

Good morning, Violets. Felt good to sleep in today. Ethan doesn't come until noon. The sun is shining, but it's only 37 degrees. I had hoped to trike this morning, but it's too chilly for that right now. The pasty is a meat pie that miners in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan took with them to eat in the mines. It has pork, beef, potatoes, onions, rutabaga and carrots baked in a crust. As for the beer, Suzie. I don't have a clue. The picture was taken by a friend of the pasties I gave her. Laura.. send me the pics in email, please. I get my Grady fix tomorrow when Kris comes in for a hair appointment. When I talked to her yesterday she was complaining about her belly. She's finding that clothes are tough to fit now with her being normal size everywhere except the belly flab. I welcomed her to my world! I gave her a pair of my size 16 slacks to wear, but she couldn't stuff her belly in. It's amazing to me that I wear a smaller size than my daughter. The tables have certainly turned. I'm off to dry my hair and get dressed for the day. Gotta figure out some breakfast too. Pasty for lunch is a given. Everyone have a great day. Be good to yourselves!

58 Days till the Violet Reunion Bandiversary Bash and 1st ever Violet Baby Shower! -
Good evening, Violets.. It's finally time for me to sit and relax for a bit. I made 17 pasties today. Gave 4 to a friend, had one for dinner and will give some to Kris in exchange for Grady time on Thursday. While the last group of pasties were baking, I went out and raked flower beds in the backyard. It's amazing how many of the plants are already greening up. I always feel it's like witnessing a miracle when I see the new growth after the plant looks totally dead. Acutally, I guess it really is!! Didn't have a chance to trike today, but hopefully tomorrow before Ethan comes at noon. Dr. PamELa.. is your back better?? TracyK.. you all back to normal after your bout with the flu?? Heather... you ARE tiny!! Even with the little belly. Haydee.. loved the pics on facebook. Such an attractive family!! Kat.. glad the job is working out so well for you. Jane.. how did the Celebration of Aging turn out? Did you take pics?? Time to watch some tv, play some computer games and then head to bed. Everyone have a good evening. Sleep well!!

Kris had a professional photographer who happens to be a family friend take pictures of the delivery. They are awesome!! She has this neat picture book showing the journey from small belly to open belly.
-
Good morning, Violets.. Off to work my hospital shift and then home to make pasties (meat pies, Dr. PamELa!!!!) That should take most of the day and then rehearsal tonight. I got to ride the trike for a half hour yesterday before we got rained on. Hope to get some trikking time in today too. Everyone make it a good one! Be good to yourselves!

Here's Jane's post about driving.

Good Morning, Violets.. The site looks funky this morning. Guess I'll quickly type and see if it posts. The sun is shining, and it's 49 degrees out so maybe it will get warm enough for me to trike today. Ethan comes at 8 for the day. I hope to get into the backyard for some poop scooping today. The lawn is just starting to get a little green. My Pistons are out of the basketball playoffs, but my Tigers did well against the Angels.... sorry, Suzie!! We have to call the hot tub people again. They supposedly fixed the problem, but when we checked the tub yesterday the same code was flashing meaning the problem had reoccurred. grrrrrrrrrrr Not much on the agenda today except babysitting. Everyone have a great day and be good to yourselves.

Good morning, Violets.. Up early this morning as we have to be at the church to practice at nine. I'm singing, reading and playing flute during the worship service, then we have a speaker and a business meeting. It will be a full day and then an almost 3 hour ride back home. I had a great swim in the hotel pool last night.. did all my exercises and then hit the hot tub. I just love being in the water. Bob is taking his shower now and I'm getting dressed so we can get a little breakfast here before we go to the church. Everyone have a great day. I won't check in again until tonight when we get home. Dr. PamELa.. your trip sounds awesome!!! When do you go?? Your summer is going to be a memorable one, for sure!
-
I'm always proud of you, Suzie!!! I'm sure you did a wonderful job and Kathy was smiling down on you. Enjoy the bridal shower today.

A definite perk of not drinking. I'll be serving up the booze on a regular basis just so I can be the Carson holder.

Kris did exactly the same thing. It made it so much easier for her when Nathan could give Grady a bottle. She now has him on all formula as of yesterday. He'll be 2 months old next Sunday. Time really does fly!!!!!
-
You all look great... ALL of you!!! Love the smiles. Wish I could have been there. You're lucky to be able to get together like that. I'm envious!!

Hey Laura... Just talked to Kris and she said to tell you to get the book The Happiest Baby on the Block" if you don't have it already. She said it is wonderful and has great tips. She said to "swaddle the crap out of him".. her exact words. She's a preacher's wife's daughter. lol
