What's the diff between RNY & DS?

Oh my gosh. No then, this is NOT the DS. EW. Carbon Filters? Yuck.

What's the diff between RNY & DS?

http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobe...gery+types.php There is info on that at this link, too. Actually I think that it has been around for quite a while. Don't quote me on that, though. I'm not sure if that link is taking you to the right place. If it takes you to the home page click on wls types toward the left.

It is! But it offers the highest success rate, if you make it, that is!

    Gastric Sleeve

Sorry, Vera. Guess I'm a thread killer...

    Gastric Sleeve

Personally I think this is a great alternative to the band, Vera. Even though you would be making an alteration, you wouldn't have the chance of erosion or slippage. Just so you know, the way the stomach is reduced, there are 3 lines of titanium staples, so there is very little chance of any problems with staple lines like in the "old days".

Oh, I forgot. The DS is the one that is rumored to have "stinky Gas!" The only time I have had it was when I had indulged in too much fat, which you shouldn't do anyway, no matter what surgery you have, or I ate something that typically gives you gas, like broccoli, Beans, cukes, you know...But when you get it, you can for sure clear a room! It helps if you have a dog, because you can always blame them!

What's the diff between RNY & DS?

Hi, Lisa. This compares the two in detail. It may be biased because it came from a DS site. http://www.duodenalswitch.com/procedure/ds_vs__rny/ds_vs__rny.html Lets see if this works: (Not the same as above link) The BPD/DS combines restrictive and malabsorptive elements to achieve and maintain the best reported long-term percentage of excess weight loss among modern weight-loss surgery procedures. The Restrictive Component The BPD/DS procedure includes a partial gastrectomy, which reduces the stomach along the greater curvature, effectively restricting its capacity while maintaining its normal functionality. Unlike the unmodified BPD and RNY, which both employ a gastric “pouch” and bypass the pyloric valve, the DS procedure keeps the pyloric valve intact. This eliminates the possibility of dumping syndrome, marginal ulcers, stoma closures and blockages, all of which can occur after other gastric bypass procedures. In addition, unlike the unmodified BPD and RNY procedures, the DS procedure keeps a portion of the duodenum in the food stream. The preservation of the pylorus/duodenum pathway means that food is digested normally (to an optimally absorbable consistency) in the stomach before being excreted by the pylorus into the small intestine. As a result, the DS procedure enables more-normal absorption of many nutrients (including Protein, Calcium, Iron and Vitamin B12) than is seen after other gastric bypass procedures. The Malabsorptive Component The malabsorptive component of the BPD/DS procedure rearranges the small intestine to separate the flow of food from the flow of bile and pancreatic juices. This inhibits the absorption of calories and some nutrients. Further down the digestive tract, these divided intestinal paths are rejoined; food and digestive juices begin to mix, and limited fat absorption occurs in the common tract as the food continues on its path toward the large intestine. Here is RNY anatomy: In the Sapala-Wood Micropouch® operation the very top of the stomach is completely divided. It is not stapled. This division results in the creation of a small “micropouch” completely separate from the lower part of the stomach. This Sapala-Wood Micropouch® is about the size of a grape (1-2 cc). The small intestine is divided into two ends. One end travels upward to be connected to the Sapala-Wood Micropouch®.The other end is attached downward to the side of the distal small intestine to complete the circuit. Food travels down the esophagus, through the Sapala-Wood Micropouch®, to the intestine It bypasses the stomach. The bottom of the stomach no longer receives any food or liquids. But the stomach will still function because its nerve and blood supply are intact. This is the best link, as it has info on all of the surgerys, not just RNY, DS and the AGB: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/information/wlsjourney/surgery+types.php That should help you out! REvised surgery

    Good Luck!
  10. Hi, Lisa. My supplements are pretty simple. I take 1 Iron 2 flintstones multi-Vitamin 2 ADEKS (special vitamin that absorbs in Water, because most absorb in fat and I don't absorb 80% of any fat I eat, which I don't each much fat at all. If you play, you pay in the potty) 5 Caltrate (only 2 more than what is recommends EVERY woman take.) I MUST supplement. No question, or some very nasty stuff can happen. All these people that have issues, I think alot of them are non compliant when it comes to supplementing and getting their levels checked. Its really not rocket science. Like Nike says "Just do it". The trade off is very acceptable, at least for me it is.

    Band for sale on eBay!??

Yes. This is disturbing. The second bidder on it had bought complete bariatric kits and laproscopic equipment. I know the third bidder and he wants it to have it, because he has a band. The doctor that was bidding (I assume they are so) said they were located in the states, but when I looked at the feedback they had left, they are foreign.
  12. I can't believe they are that expensive. The one on ebay is what? $65 dollars! Just kidding!
  13. Mine went to pathology...
  14. Banded August 2002 Unbanded November 2005
  15. Yes, I did throw up and yes, it did hurt... As soon as that started, my doc unfilled me asap (fit me in) and gave me a script for Phenergen (sp?) for it. I still got sick just from smells or brushing my teeth... I wouldn't change it for the world though. My daughter is almost 9 months old and she is my world.

    Please post about your complications

    Hi, Marlene. I emailed you!
  17. I gained 60 pounds while pregnant. Yep. Thats right. My fill was entirely removed early due to hyperemesis, and I ate like a pig. Krispy Kremes were my friend. I drank boat load of Orange juice. Don't make the same mistake I did! I went crazy because I had been banded over 2 years at that point and I just wanted to taste everything. pizza, cheesesteaks, you name it, I thought pregnancy was a license to gorge. Don't do that and you'll be fine!
  18. jaysmom- I had a band for 3 years and was recently revised to a Duodenal Switch (no fault of the band, my body just didn't like it). I am curious as to why you think the bypass would be best suited for you? I have had both, and they both have their pros and cons. Edited to add that some people go to Mexico because they are self pay and it is alot cheaper there. I'm not really qualified to answer about those particuliar complications, but I wouldn't think they would be potentially fatal unless it would go unattended or side effects from aspiration Pnuemonia. Lap Band by far is the safest WLS. But it is not for everyone.

    Please post about your complications

I had my band placed in August of 2002. My port flipped soon after surgery, so I had a port replacement in August of 2003. I developed scar tissue blocking the tubing to the band rendering it useless (no fill in, no fill out, blocked up like a cork!) so my band was removed 11/17/05 and I had a revision to the DS. So far I am 37 pounds down in a bit over 5 (almost 6) weeks. Sometimes complications happen no matter what kind of surgery you have. I think most people do OK, with minor or no complications with banding. Well Wishes!

    Week 4 post op

Yep. I lost 24 and gained back 14 when I got off the liquid phase. You're normal, dear!
  21. Oh, no, no, no. I see where you got that, but thats not what I meant! Sorry about that. No, I had the fill removed. My band was removed in November because I had scar tissue blocking the tubing therefore preventing the band from working. There was no guarantee the scar tissue wouldn't "wrap it" again, so I opted for the DS. I had my band removed and the DS done a few days before Sue. Sue was very instrumental in my choice to have the DS, and I thank her for letting me know there is something else out there besides the RNY. My insurance company was alot quicker than hers, and I didn't have to fight with them. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't clear at all.

    Hello!!! I am Back!!!!!

    I wouldn't have noticed either. I think you're beautiful!
  23. Even though I am unbanded now, I was up to 3.8 in my 4 cc. (and I didn't slip or erode) I had to get it out because I was pregnant.
