Anyone newly banded and having a horrible time following the diet?
Toddy replied to bnrguy34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the above posters that said you need to let your pouch heal! But you also need to know that you must quit looking for a "full" feeling. After you've healed and are on to regular foods, if you eat until you feel "full" you will have overeaten and will be extremely uncomfortable. As a banded person, you have to learn to recognize when your body is satisfied. You will need to recognize "satisfied" now. -
I was kind of a worse case scenario: I had a slip after eight months and had to have full on surgery again within ten months of my first surgery... BUT ... I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My first surgery I felt was awful because it took me a full seven days to recover from... my second surgery was a breeze. I am not quite at goal yet, but I recently told a friend that if I never lost another pound I am so much happier than I was pre-surgery!!!!
-
I was off a week -- but that seventh day when I went back turned out to be my worst day post surgery. After that particular day, I was fine. Oh, and as far as getting pregnant, I've done some research on that because my daughter wants lapband and wants to make sure it doesn't interfere with fertility... What I've found is that it is often easier to get pregnant after some weight loss, and the pregnancies seem to be very normal.

Got stuck on dinner tonight, it's been a while since that has happened
Toddy replied to donna12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too! I try to not let myself get that hungry because it happens every time... and you never know until it's too late that you've over done it! -
Definitely need to contact your doctor! Maybe something; maybe nothing. Never hurts to be checked out, especially where there is a history of heart disease in the family!
-
I relocated from TN to NC and didn't have any problem finding a dr in NC. I know my surgeon in TN took patients from other areas because he felt like it was his duty to help anyone he could. Sounds like you need to find a dr more interested in the patient than the money!!

The line I typically cruise on charges the same amount regardless of age. The difference in price for your son could just be a third or fourth person in the room discount and not actually a kid's discount. Even if Disney gives a discount for children, I would be shocked if they discount an adult due to banding. As far as getting a discount when you eat out, I have a card from my doctor's office that states that I've had surgery and to please let me order off the kid's menu. However, typically the food on the kid's menu is garbage that I wouldn't eat even if I wasn't banded... hot dogs, mac & cheese. PB&J! Yuck!! Where I have used the card with success is when we eat at a buffet. I simply won't pay adult prices at a buffet because it is a huge waste of money.

I've had a Thinner brand scale for years!! It is always exactly four pounds different from my doctor's scale, but I'm weighing first thing in the morning and in the buff at home and with clothes on and later in the day at the doctor's office.

A tip for if you stop losing or start gaining
Toddy replied to Mrs.Bales's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
That's a great idea!!!!! -
I hadn't crossed my legs in several years. Now it just feels completely natural again!!

I'm 17 pounds from goal weight and you can't see my port, even when I suck in... however you can definitely feel it. I love to feel it because it's a reminder that I've got a helper in this weight loss thing. My Dr. numbs the site and I've never felt anything.

WLS is drastic and is NOT an easy way to lose weight! You have to change your entire way of eating; there are things you may love that you may never be able to eat again; you will get sick and most likely have complications if you don't stop eating when your body tells you to -- not when you feel "full". It is also not a guarantee to lose... some people can even gain weight despite being banded. You have to have routine maintenance with a band, especially in the beginning. I'm not trying to scare you, it's just that I would never consider putting myself through this if I was under 50 lbs overweight. But once again, that is just my opinion.
-
If you have to try to gain weight for weight loss surgery... maybe you don't need something as drastic as surgery... JMHO! And of course the doctor's criteria is lower... he wants the money.

Don't think of it as doing it alone... think of it as ALL ONE!!!

I am very close to reaching my goal weight. I recently spent a long weekend with my sisters at my mother's house, who is the BEST cook in the world... and loves us with food! Although there are a few things that I have trouble eating and tend to stay away from, I did not deny myself ANYTHING that wouldn't cause me problems. I came back home and got on the scale and weighed exactly what I did when I left. All of this to say: I don't believe there are any "bad" foods... only bad quantities. Not denying myself things I crave occasionally, but instead just having a very small amount of what I crave, while keeping in mind that I eat so little, it needs to be mostly healthy, has been a very successful way for me to lose weight.

To sip or not to sip, that is the question
Toddy replied to Banjo257's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was given a cup of Water with a straw when I woke up in recovery. I always use a straw and have never had any problem at all. I'm not a gum chewer, so can't tell you anything about that other than my doctor never said not to chew gum, but it does make sense that it could cause some awful problems if you swallow it! -
I haven't been able to finish a whole LC since I've been in the green zone, so there's a lot of waste there. When I have to grab a meal on the run, I try to find something that I can split in to two meals without the waste. Also, there are a lot of things in LCs that I have trouble eating, like rice, Pasta, etc.

I was released to drive as soon as I was off pain meds for 24 hours.

Ugh. I can eat anything !
Toddy replied to tdchicago's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hang in there. It's so worth it! There are times I get frustrated that I can't eat the "junk" I want to... but that passes quickly. But then when I get on the scale the next day I'm so glad I couldn't eat that stuff... -
http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-politics/20130507/US-Christie-Weight-Surgery/ I just read this this morning. Hope it's not old news and I was the only one that didn't hear about it!

You're in the phase that is commonly known as Bandster Hell, aptly named because the band really isn't much help at this stage. It took me three fills to feel any restriction. Hang in there and try your hardest to follow the band rules. Like CG said, focus on the Protein and drink lots of water! It will get better! Also, go ahead and call your doctor; it can't hurt!!

Lap band removal complications
Toddy replied to azadeh660's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you're not having any problems, just wait it out. I certainly wouldn't jump into surgery on a "it might be..." -
Yeah, the grammar is a dead give away!!!

I can easily see how people can gain weight with the band. No. 1 - slider foods, often extremely high in fat and I guess that fat just helps it slide on through. No. 2 - grazers. A grazer can eat a little bit at a time all through the day and those calories can really add up! No. 3 - neglect their band. They know they need an adjustment, but are enjoying eating and/or don't want to spend the time or money keeping their band properly adjusted.
