Should you recommend surgery to obese oeople struggling?
Toddy replied to Julie norton's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
NOT unless they ask first!!!!!!! -
Welcome Steve. Even though you may feel in the minority here on the boards, one of the most inspirational posters on this board for me has been B-52. I believe he's 60ish and has been extremely successful with his weight loss! I'm not sure how to look up specific posters on here, but I'm sure you'll run across him eventually.

Hi all, I consider myself a veteran, but I'm clueless about what is going on now. I'm good about knowing when to stop eating. But the last few days, a couple of minutes after I finish eating I get hit with an extreme bout of nausea and I have to really focus and concentrate on not vomiting. It usually passes after a minute or two, but it's a tough couple of minutes. Any idea what's causing it, or anyone else experience the same thing?

Not stuck, not overeating, no virus, but having extreme nausea right after eating...
Toddy replied to Toddy's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I meant to add that I've already had my gallbladder removed, so that's not the culprit... No particular kind of food... it could be something as bland as a pork chop or as spicy as a thin crust slice of pizza. The frustrating thing is I stop eating when I'm satisfied, which is less than a cup of food, and then in a couple of minutes the nausea starts and I really have to fight it so I don't throw up. -
When my pcp prescribed a new med, I asked him the size of the pill to make sure I could swallow it. He rolled his eyes and said the bariatric surgeons really exaggerate the ability to swallow stuff after surgery, because none of his other lapband patients had any problem swallowing. I told him if his other patients could swallow big pills that their bands weren't property adjusted! I just don't think the pcp's get it, but are afraid to admit they don't know something.

Spouse is NOT on board.....
Toddy replied to manda81305's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
CHEZNOEL is right, this would be hard to do without support. You really need him to be honest about his reasons against wls and try to address his concerns. Maybe some joint counseling will help you both deal with what's to come. -
I'm a year and a half out and close to goal. I pretty much eat whatever I want, but just in very small quantities, and make sure I get my protein in first. A couple of times recently I have thought I would "treat" myself to a little something and when I try to figure out what I want, I just come up blank. I have walked every aisle of the grocery store several times just looking for something "good". When I've done that I usually walk out empty handed. I think the band has done wonders for my cravings!!

I can guarantee you if you have it removed this soon you will only feel worse than you do right now. Give your body a chance to recover or you will truly regret it. Good luck!

How much/how fast can you drink?
Toddy replied to PuraVida37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can drink pretty much normally until I reach the green zone, and then I have to slow down.. that's one thing that lets me know I'm in the green. I take a drink, wait for it to pass through the band and then take another drink. I love water and it's hard to slow down when I'm really thirsty, but my body lets me know it can't handle the chugs! -
I was just the opposite... horrible pain that was relieved by unfill.

My surgeon told me before surgery that if I didn't eat enough protein daily (enough being 60 to 80 grams) that it would negatively affect my hair and nails. Having thin and fine hair to begin with, I took him seriously! I did experience some loss at around three months post-op and added the Biotin and haven't had any further problems.

Sounds like your stoma is irritated from all the regurgitation or vomiting. You need to go on all liquids for a day or two until the swelling is gone. If you don't, it will continue to get worse and that can lead to a slip. When you start back on solids, you also need to examine your eating habits. Make sure you're not taking too big of a bite, make sure you're chewing well and don't swallow until you chew until about the consistency of applesauce. You mentioned salad. Salad is one thing I can eat but have to be very careful and slow or it causes problems.

Banded yesterday, freaking out today! :( Lots of discomfort
Toddy replied to matilda85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Never hesitate to call your doctor's office... they are paid well to take care of us and answer our questions. However, it's quite normal to be uncomfortable one day after major surgery. Your body was traumatized and there is swelling where there normally isn't. It would actually be more unusual to not feel pain. You may second guess yourself now and maybe even until you have enough fills to have restriction, but when you get to the green zone and watch the scale drop, you'll realize it was worth it. Good luck! -
I wish I was. When we eat out, people start looking at me like I'm Typhoid Mary!

strange intolerance now
Toddy replied to merryKerry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get very mild heartburn every afternoon even if I haven't eaten anything ;-( I take Zantac daily. -
Mine is not soft... I sneeze violently several times.

Be prepared for a possible long wait. A lot of insurance companies require a six month supervised diet before approval. I was lucky and had my Weight Watchers card showing well over six months. My first appt was in November and I could have had my surgery in December, but I put it off due to a cruise we had scheduled in early January.

Went for 1st fill, but dr. tried twice to find port...no fill
Toddy replied to Countryheart2000's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Even if they are wanting to do it under x-ray, you should still be able to get in way before November!!!! Be assertive and tell them you don't want to wait! -
Yup, sounds like you're definitely too tight. Get it taken care of now because it will only get worse...

I was a Diet Pepsi addict pre-surgery. I have used my surgery as a reason to break that habit, and I have. I have taken a very small sip or two of my husband's, and it just makes me burp. Now, as a tradition, a mimosa or a poinsettia on Christmas Eve is still doable, I just drink it really, really slowly!

My band slipped after only eight months. Vomiting on a frequent basis is a major cause of band slips. I had only vomited twice when my band slip was diagnosed, which apparently is very unusual. However, I did know at the time that my band was irritated after eating too much/wrong things while on vacation. I knew I should go on liquids for a couple of days, and let things settle down, and the swelling subside, but I didn't. Therefore, I consider myself responsible for my slip... A lot of people opt for lapband as an "easy and completely reversible" weight loss surgery, neither of which is true. Weight loss surgery of any kind requires a dedication to changing a lifetime of bad eating habits.

Getting the proper amount of protein is one of the MOST important thing following wls. Sixty grams minimum per day!! If you don't like the protein drinks, there are numerous ways to add protein to your meals.
-
Pay close attention to your body when you're eating. A lot of us have "soft stops" that tell us it's time to quit eating. For me, when I am "full" I sneeze. I've heard of other people that get left shoulder pain, hiccup, yawn, or their nose runs.
-
First you need to make sure you're getting in plenty of protein. Some people say that Biotin helps.
-
I wish you the best, also. Come back monthly and let us know how you're doing...
