I don't even know what to think...
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to madrisere's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Take control of the situation and tell him NO. Period. It's your body and 100% under your control. Simply tell him you don't want it. -
It has nothing to do with public health access for everyone and everything to do with the way the Obamacare bill is written. Simply put- it was great in theory but failing miserably in execution.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but for the first time in my entire life I'm joining the gym with my daughter. Should be interesting!

First fill after 2 months
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to sabra052005's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It depends. Are you hungry all the time or just eating too much? If your problem is physical hunger, then yes a fill could help. If you're eating too much or too often regardless of hunger, then no a fill isn't likely to help. You have to remember, the band is there to control your physical hunger not control what or how much you eat. Best wishes. -
Perhaps it depends on the providence you live in? It sounds like you've had a very good experience with your healthcare system- which is wonderful. Unfortunately, the majority of the people I know with serious health issues in Ontario have had horrible luck. The death panel thing is only partial true though no less scary. The way the Obamacare bill is written, whether or not people are approved for treatment is dependent on statistics. A good example: Woman A is diagnosed with cancer and given a 75% survival probability because she has no other pre-existing conditions. She receives treatment. Woman B is diagnosed with the same cancer but due to pre-existing conditions complicating it, she only has a 40% survival probability. She is denied treatment because it's not deemed "financially responsible" to invest so much money into someone who's likely to die anyway. To me, this is terrifying and it's fast coming reality here- despite the fact most Americans have never read the healthcare bill and no media reports on it so they are totally unaware this is happening. In fact, all the cuts to Medicare to fund Obamacare have in large part gone to fund all the "studies" to support this care based on statistics. I don't know how such decisions are made in the Canadian healthcare system, I only know what I've seen directly from those around me over the years living on the Canadian border. I suppose at this point neither system is "better" (in my opinion) just a matter of lesser of the two evils. But what upsets me is the fact this didn't used to be the case. Before Obamacare, costs aside I'd still totally take our healthcare free market over the Canadian socialized medicine. Now? I honestly don't know and that's in large part because we're now getting sucked into socialized medicine too.

Am I doing something wrong?
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to intelirish's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're not doing anything wrong. In fact, by sticking to your doctor's post op diet and going to your follow up appointments, you're doing everything right. Remember, you have been cut open, pumped full of air, had a silicone band sewn to your stomach, and had a port sewn to your abdominal wall. Your body has been through alot! It takes a good 4-6 weeks to really heal and feel normal again. Sometimes even longer. Be patient and keep doing what you're doing and you'll be back to normal soon. Hang in there! -
So unfair! You guys get bigger junk and all we get are smaller, saggy boobs!

Wondering if I need an slight unfill
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to staceylinn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Personally, if it were me, I'd be getting a slight unfill. Being too tight is the number one cause of band complications and people seem to have this very untrue idea that "tighter is better". It's not. Tighter leads to major complications and slips, not weight loss. The idea is for the bad to control your appetite while allowing you to eat a normal, healthy diet. If you're struggling with liquids, no matter what time of day, then chances are good you're a little too tight. If I were you, I'd call your doctor and let him help you decide. I know my doctor would be taking some Fluid out (and has in the past), Best wishes. -
No you're totally right, Chris. I am one of those people who can't afford it- nor can I afford the thousands of dollars in medical bills I currently have piled up. I am on Disability because I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2008 and can no longer work in the field I once did. I live on a very fixed income, and quite honestly, right now I am drowning in medical debt. Four months ago I ended up in the ICU for 8 days due to life threatening blood clots in both legs. Not to be dramatic, but I almost died. But here's the thing- I was able to be air lifted to hospital 70 miles away and given very aggressive and uncommon treatment (also brutal, ugh) to dissolve the clots. They found the blood clots around dinner time and I was in the hospital 70 miles away by bedtime. I started the treatment the very next day. Because of this, I am here today and able to plan a wonderful life raising my kids. I will take the giant medical bills I'm now dealing with over the government dictating my care, or worse delaying or denying treatment, any day. You can't put a dollar amount the price of human life, you know? Just my take on it.

You can TOTALLY do this!! And fyi- you are NOT failing!! You've managed to maintain your weight despite life handing you a big plate of stress and you've done it for months. That isn't failing, that's a huge accomplishment and something to be proud of.

No offense and nothing against you personally, but I do think socialized medicine is terrible. I live right on the Canadian border. When I was a little girl, I used to walk to Canada and buy candy at the little store by the ferry landing. I had to take the ferry across the river to get there and back and no one thought anything of it back then. That's how close I live to Ontario. Because of this, there A LOT of Canadians who either live here or work over here. Many commute to work here in the US from Canada daily. In fact, my bariatric surgeon even went to college in Canada. The fact that everyone is entitled to health care without going broke in Canada is wonderful and something I think everyone should have. However, the bureaucratic BS I see so many going through over there is nothing less than ridiculous. I have a friend (Canadian) who is bipolar and schizophrenic. He has been trying to get help for almost a year without luck. The problem? He's told which psychiatrist he must use and that psychiatrist is useless. He could switch doctors, but that takes months to be approved and then he has to wait to get into that one, too. I have another friend who died waiting for what should've been a routine test. She was suspected to have cancer and needed a specialized scan to confirm the diagnosis. She couldn't get in for the scan for over 3 months- and as a result she died waiting for it. I could go on and on about cases like this, people left waiting weeks and months very necessary testing that if they were in America they'd get almost immediately. Again, nothing against you personally or even Canada as a country, but I want nothing to do with Canadian socialized medicine. I may have medical bills up the wazoo (and I do!) but at least I can go to whatever doctor I choose and get any treatment I need without waiting.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you are eating enough calories and getting in your Protein, you don't have to worry about losing too much. I lost 44 pounds before my first fill, which was 6 weeks post op. In the beginning it was easy for me to drop at least 20 pounds a month. Now, I'm lucky to lose 5-8 pounds per month. Just enjoy it while it lasts

No, this will actually have a trickle down effect to everyone, state medical care or not. The reason is this- the Obamacare has a lot of rules written into it that are essentially made to phase out private health insurance entirely. On day one that Obamacare becomes mandatory, anyone who has existing health insurance and wants to keep it can and is then grandfathered into their current plan. However, if you ever leave that plan even if temporarily, you can no longer go back to it. Furthermore anyone else who's picking up insurance by your carrier can't get into that grandfathered plan. So, you can work at a company and have the same health insurance company yet very different plans. The reason is because all health insurance will have to essentially mirror the rules that Obamacare sets into place. This is being done over time but will happen, so one day in the near future everyone's care will be pretty much identical regardless of how much your premium costs and who your carrier is. So if Obamacare says no WLS surgery is covered? Then eventually the only people who will have it are people grandfathered into their existing plans who have it. This is one of the reasons so many health insurance companies have raised premiums the last couple years and cut coverage- because they know it's only a matter of time before they have to turn into Obamacare mirrors and a huge majority of them will be forced out of business because of it entirely. In the coming years, you will not have a choice and nor will anyone else. Welcome to socialized medicine. Btw, I know this because I spent months reading the entire 1000+ page bill. Just FYI

Insurance criteria help needed.
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to tryingforever's topic in Insurance & Financing
If that is your insurance company's requirement- then unfortunately no. There's no way around it. -
Gee I'm shocked, Obamacare continues to completely screw everything up. Please excuse me while I go wipe the sarcasm from my chin.

How common are complications?
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to SpartanPrincess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Statistically speaking, you only have a 5% chance of complications if you follow the band rules and doctor's instructions. The other 95% screwed up in some way (band too tight and over-eating the most common) and caused the complications themselves. Blood clots have nothing to do with band. They're a risk after any surgery. -
Have I already entered bandster hell?
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to LapbandLo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, you're not sabotaging your diet because the post op diet has nothing to do with weight loss. It's about giving your body time to heal. You are, however, seriously sabotaging your body and risking major complications. Your stomach has been sutured, manipulated, and overall injured. By cheating on your post op diet you are risking ripping those stitches and/or causing a band slip. Get back on your doctor's post op diet, follow it exactly, and don't cheat. It's not worth the risks. -
Full liquids in the morning. Want now...
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to jdewv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, that would be bad because oatmeal isn't a liquid. It's a mushy. Stick to full liquids and your doctor's post op diet. It's not worth ripping a suture or causing a band slip because of cheating. -
I don't know how MFP works, but in Lose It you can add recipes. So if I were having homemade Sweet and Sour chicken, I would enter all the ingredients and create a recipe. Lose It will then tell me how many calories, Protein, fat, etc. are in each serving. I do this a lot for dishes I cook regularly because once they're entered they're in the databse for next time. Maybe MFP has something similar?

Going to liquids isn't a way to lose weight, in fact it's a good way to gain weight because it all comes back as soon as you start eating real food again. If you're so tight you're struggling with liquids and vomiting there's a good chance you're too tight. I'd give your doctor a call and let him help decide the best course of action.
