No Food For Two Weeks After Surgery?

I couldn't have mushies until 4 weeks after surgery, so that was a month of liquids. It sucks be we all go through it and survive it. Just stick to your doctor's orders because right now proper healing is the most important thing.

    Bad Day But Its Ok

When you're at home, you need to measure your food to get a feel for how much to eat. No more than 1 cup of food per meal (total). If you're still hungry after it's gone, you have to just white knuckle it and wait it out. It gets a lot easier once you have a couple fills but until then it's all on your willpower. By measuring at home, you will get a much better idea of how much to eat by sight when going out to eat, too from seeing it all the time at home. It will also allow you to track your calories because you know how much you're eating, too. I would strongly suggest meeting with a nutrionist so you know how much to eat, what to eat, and what not to eat. Good luck.
  3. I go back to the surgeon on Wednesday and I'm definitely not getting a fill. I think my band is at the perfect restriction right now.

    First Fill

Good luck to all of you having your first fill this week! And don't worry, it's a piece of cake. I never even feel it at all. My only piece of advice is to take a big gulp of Water before leaving the office, not just a little sip. This way, if by chance you're too tight, you'll start gurgling up water so you can have some of the Fluid removed right way. It will save you a lot of time and hassle.

    Help. Im Gaining Weight

The first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing not losing. For now, concentrate on following the doctor's orders and the post op diet. Losing will come later. In the meantime, do try to make sure what you're drinking is good for you. If you're drinking say, loads of fruit juice, you may as well be drinking pure sugar. I know it's hard when on the liquids stage because choices are so limited already, but if you can try to make healthy choices even now it'll help you in the future.

What Did You Do With Your Clothes?

I give my old clothes to Salvation Army, because all the money made from sales there are turned back around to help those in poverty get food, pay rent, and pay utilities.

    Protein Versus Fat

What do you consider a high amount of fat? What percentage of your diet comes from fat? What type of Protein are you eating?

Then you should talk to your surgeon about it and possibly get a slight unfill. Slider foods lead to weight gain and a band too tight leads to slips.

    Please Help!!!! Frustrated And Angry!

Some people need more in their band to fell restriction than others, it's frustrating. I know you said you are working out, but are you also keeping your serving sizes to a cup or less of food? Are you tracking your calories? If not, this would be the best place to start. Most people who don't track their calories are shocked when they do because they're usually eating a lot more calories and fat than they realized.

Did I Jump Right Past Green Zone

Well, it's possible, but here's some questions: -Are you taking tiny bites? Like the size your finger nail? -Are you chewing until the food is complete mush? -Are you pausing between bites? When I had my last fill, I struggled to eat big time. In fact, I almost got a slight unfill. But then I realized even though I thought the bites I was taking were small enough- they weren't. I started doing exactly what I listed above and was able to eat normally again. Eating slider foods isn't good and neither is a band that's too tight. When did you have your last fill?

    Really Really Blew My Progress

If it was just a one day thing, just shrug it off and start fresh today. We all have our occasional "bad" day. We're human- it's what we do. Just don't let your off day turn into a habit and you'll be fine.

Very Worried I May Have Something Wrong

I agree with the ladies above, if you are "worried and think something is really wrong", you need to be contacting your surgeon not posting here. We're not surgeons and any advice you get here is strictly guesses and opinions.

    Starvation Mode

I actually spoke to my nutritionist about this a couple months back after a ton of debates about this on here. What we call "starvation mode" in terms of dieting isn't starvation at all. When you eat far less calories than your body needs to sustain itself, you create a sort of self-induced metabolic syndrome. When you dip below a certain point (everyone is different, btw, there is no magic number) your metabolism will slow considerably. This very often results in a plateau that wouldn't have happened if you were eating more. However, self induced metabolic syndrome or not, it is inevitable you will start losing again eventually just by basic math. Burning more calories than you are consuming and the pounds come off. Some people truly do need more calories to successfully lose weight. I hit a plateau a couple months ago eating 1000 calories a day, increased my calories by only 100-200, and the weight started falling off again. Currently, I am only eating 800-900 calories a day not because I'm restricting myself to that amount but because I have really good restriction and I'm simply never hungry enough to eat more. So "Starvation Mode" is a bad name for it because you're not starving. But, everyone's body is different and needs a different amount to successfully and consistently lose weight.

    Lost Of My Friend!

No offense, but that is incredibly unlikely. Dehydration can increase stroke risk in those already susceptible, but it's not going to cause a stroke unless it's so severe you're dying in a desert. And, she would've been on an IV during surgery, so she was on fluids. There is zero proof it was the band. Only that it was incredibly unfortunate that the surgery (likely anesthesia) lead to her passing.

    Lost Of My Friend!

I'm very very sorry for your loss, but you must realize the band isn't what caused her death. She had a stroke while under anesthetic during surgery, and that has nothing to do with the band. The same thing would've happened if she was having surgery for gall bladder or anything else. The band can't cause a stroke and it's the stroke that lead to everything else leading up to her passing. It just so happened that it occurred while being treated for a slip. Again, I am very sorry, but I also don't want people freaked out thinking their band is going to cause a stroke and kill them. It's not the case nor is it possible.

    Protein Shots

Keep in mind, the body can only use 20-30g of Protein per meal. Anything beyond that, you're essentially wasting. So if you're getting 45g of protein in a drink for lunch, you're actually doing yourself a disservice because at least 15g of that your body won't even use. It's always best to spread the protein between multiple meals Here's some info on it: http://www.precisionnutrition.com/protein-limit

    Question

It's very likely you can eat as much as you did before the surgery because you don't have restriction yet. As Shauna pointed out, stick to your portions. It's not easy and can be very frustrating but you will be glad you did down the road. Once you have some restriction after a couple fills it gets MUCH easier.

    Totally Petrified Now

honk is right. Unfortunately the people having problems post at least 5x as often as those coasting along happily with their bands. I encourage you do some actual research on the band statistics and not base your fears off posts here. Especially considering the majority of band issues you read on here are self-caused to begin with. Look at it like this- your have a far greater risk of dying from obesity related health issues than you do from band issues. At worse case scenario, it slips, and the doctor either fixes it or removes it. But if you remain obese, the risk is literally premature death. Personally, I'd much rather take the risks with the band than of dying before my time because I'm obese.

    2 Fills...no Restriction....arrrgh!

Yes you are in bandster hell unfortunately. Until you do have good restriction you're left to your own willpower. I have always religiously measured my food (no more than a cup total per meal) as well as logged what I ate in an app called Lose It. I firmly believe those two things are the only reason I have lost consistently since surgery- because I ate bandster sized portions before I had restriction and continue to monitor my calories, fat, Protein, and carbs. Before I had good restriction, it wasn't easy. I'd finish my cup of food and still be hungry. But, I still stopped eating because I knew it was crucial to weight loss. Now, I normally can't even finish a whole a cup of food. The restriction made a huge difference. I know right now it's hard but it does get easier. You may want to measure food and count calories in the meantime if you want to lose even without restriction. Best wishes.
  20. Comparing the band to Phentermine is like comparing apples to oranges. Totally different. Phentermine is essentially legal speed. Over time your body becomes immune to it's effects and it takes more and more to work. Once you stop taking it, most people gain all their weight back and then some. Not to mention it's not good for your heart at all. The band is a tool. It does suppress the appetite and restrict how much you can eat, however you still have change your eating habits to healthy ones for a lifetime.

I eat all three and often. I just have to be sure to take tiny bites and chew it like crazy.

    Ugh!!! Terrible Appointment Today!!

Oh I'd be livid, and I'd definitely let your surgeon know what happened so he/she doesn't refer other patients to either of those idiots.

Dr. Robert Cywes - Why I Left The Practice

A couple things to point out: Unless you have signed the medical release federally required under the HIPPA laws giving them permission to give the records to the specific surgeon, they can't. No amount of phone calls, letters, and emails can change that. It's the law. Considering you've now seen three different surgeons, there is sure to be a major communication issue going on between them. No surgeon can change, or effect, an insurance determination. I understand your frustration at being told you have to have a co-morbidity or 6 month diet before getting the sleeve when you already had the band, but that's not the surgeon's fault nor can they change that. You need to go after the insurance company directly to appeal this, not the surgeon(s). They have zero control over it. Best of luck to you. I would take the reigns on this and go the doctor's office(s) to sign the medical release forms and contact your insurance company yourself if you'd like this resolved,
  24. I started throwing stuff out around the 60 pound mark. I kept one pair of pants to remind me where I've come from and one shirt that I now use to mow the grass in. ...but the grass mowing shirt is about done too. It's like a tent on me. It's so big it literally falls off my shoulders lol

    Food Addiction But Still Sucessful?

I was a major food addict and I'm sure I still am. I think of it like being a recovering alcoholic, I stay away from triggers because I know I'm just one bite from falling off the wagon if I don't. It can be managed but the key is realizing the problem is in your head, not your stomach, so the band can't and won't fix it.
