    Can this be REAL?!?!

I started with pain management and got a referral from him. If you go on your ins. website, do a search for criteria for panniculectomy and take that to your dr. for them to reference when writing the referral. Losing weight helped my back a little, but my back problems are not weight related, I have ankylosing spondylosis.

    Health Improvements?

19 months post op and no HBP meds, sleep apnea has gone from 48 apneas per hour to 6 hypoapneas per hour, NO apneas.

Had a great (and my first) NSV today

AWESOME!!! You will see an increase in energy (throughout the whole day) and notice that things will get easier and you will be able to do more and more as time goes on. You will look back at these early days in the gym, and realize how far you've come in a short time!

    Fat googles?

ABSOLUTELY!! People tell me I look great or sometimes that I am too skinny. I still see 275 lb. me. Hopefully will get better after the tt, lipo and panniculectomy.

    More than I expected!

Blue cross Mediblue Select. Had to be 18 months post-op (I am 19 months, and normal BMI since Dec, 2012) and have 3 months at a normal BMI. If you go to your ins. website, you can search for criteria for panniculectomy, as all are different.

maybe give them a call. They should've let you know one way or the other within 6 weeks. Maybe the dr. didn't submit yet?

    July 26 plastics... Updates:)

I will only have a 23hr hospital stay, then am on my own. My sis will be around to help. I don't have stairs to get in my apt. but I like to go upstairs and hang with my sis. Wonder how long before I'll be able to go up the stairs. I don't have a recliner, so hopefully will be able to sleep/get in or out of my bed. My bed is a bit higher than a regular bed, so maybe that will be helpful when getting up. I have a high pain tolerance and heal well, so hopefully my recovery will go as well as yours. Even if it is MUCH worse, will STILL be worth it when all is said and done!!

Thank you so much Michelleandcolten!! I will be looking at your pics frequently, so hopefully I will not pass out while caring for my drains/incisions. Did you need help, in the first few days, to get in/out of bed? out of a chair? were you able to do stairs? BTW, You look terrific in those jeans, bet it feels amazing!

    July 26 plastics... Updates:)

I will be having a tt, panni and lipo. Please tell me, in detail, about the pain, drain care, recovery, care of skin around drains, incision care etc.... Need to be as mentally prepared as possible. If you have pics of incisions and where the drains come out, that would be helpful, too. I gross out easily and pass out, so want to desensitize myself as much as possible. I live alone and don't want to pass out and be unconscious on the floor, LOL!

Your age and beginning stats are identical to mine. How did you get the insurance to pay? I went to a consult today and the surgeon was 99% saying they wouldn't pay. Even with lots of documented rashes with my primary dr. Any thoughts?

      TheRealMeIsHere!

I have severe ankylosing spondylosis in my entire spine, so I started with pain management. I went on my insurance website, and searched 'criteria for panniculectomy'. Took that to pain management doctor who wrote a letter of medical necessity that echoed all the criteria needed. I also wrote a letter that spoke about the co-morbidities that were resolved with weight loss (HBP, SEVERE apnea) and how exercise is crucial in keeping weight off. Also how the extra skin, was limiting my range of motion and exercise options. This along with the plastic surgeon's pictures and prior approval request went to my insurance company. And the stars and planets aligned, lol, it ended up on the right person's desk and not only was panni approved, but also abdominoplasty!! I was SHOCKED and showed the approval letter to several people who were just as surprised, including the plastic surgeon.

All insurance is different, though. The surgeon said that one insurance company required that the patient have rashes and infections so severe that they needed to be hospitalized and on IV antibiotics!

    "You're losing too much weight"

People are just used to seeing so many people overweight to one degree or another, that they've forgotten what 'normal' looks like

    Protein Fatigue

at this point, you should be eating ONLY protein foods. Anything else will take up space in your tiny tummy that should be for protein.

How can I get Blue Cross to cover it?

If you go to the insurance's website, do a search for "criteria for a panniculectomy", this will tell you exactly what they consider medically necessary.

    July 26 plastics... Updates:)

Thank you for sharing the pics. If my insurance will cover it, I hope to, at least, get a panniculectomy. I pass out easily, so need to desensitize myself to the drains. How did you feel after surgery, through today? What kind of care do the drains require? Hope you have a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.

    I hate eating

Eventually, you will replace the time that you spent eating with other activities. My world has gotten SOOO much bigger. I do a lot of things that I never had time for. Eating is no longer the main highlight of my day. I eat, because I have to, I now enjoy it, somewhat, but it does not have the 'hold' on me that it used to. Early on, I had to set a schedule of when to eat/drink or I wouldn't, had NO interest. You are doing fine, it's all part of the journey.
