First Horrible Experience...anyone else?
drmedhat replied to I Can and I Will's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stomach spasm is common; probably all of us had it every now and then. Basically, when the stomach was stappled, part removed and a small part remains. The continuity and integrity of the wall muscles are disrupted and of course, it is not a normal stomach that can handle and move the food like before. So, with overeating, or more commonly with rapid swallowing, or inadequate crunching of food, or pouring water ( or juice) along the food, can trigger that sense of spasm that lasts for 15-20 minutes. It is best to avoid it to start with. Have adequate fluids (soup or water or juice) before the meal. Then eat slowly and stop sensibly. If it happens, just stay still, little movement or certain posture sometimes eases relaxation or eructation that usually relieved the bad feeling. Try the smell of mint or other aromatic plant, it might help. -
I have been sleeved 3 and half months ago. I lost about 20 kg (about 36 pounds) in that period. I was wearing size 50 inch before surgery, now I 'm wearing 42-44 inch. However, I feel I am not losing fat from the tummy but rather from the limbs. This is roughly estimated by the skin fold thickness (The minimum skin fold you can pinch at the area below the ribs (subcostal) or in the back of arm Triceps area). It seems the skin fold in the abdomen essentially the same!!! What is your experience?

Power plate is a fantastic machine ; 10 min exercise is claimed to equal one hour in the gym. It does not require active movements, can be practiced even when fatigued. It can move and vibrate many muscles in the body including back and tummy muscles. It is claimed to be anti-osteoporosis and increase the venous circulation as well. Do not jumb on the machine after food or drink

The machine is not that big. It is a plate enough to stand on. It can fit in any corner. IT is nice to tune many muscles at the same time especially in the odd days that there is will for a treadmill or other exercises. It also can give you the feeling of chair massage or back rub! It also can be used as a warm up before proper exercise. To avoid harm the joints; don't lock your knees while standing, always bend them a little. Every move or turn of the legs or waist , you will feel the vibration moving to another muscle.

It is not expensive . I bought a taiwanese machine called "crazy fit message" for about $500 only. The original american power plate is worth of $15,000 which is suitable for hotels and big gyms.

Which fat goes first?
drmedhat replied to drmedhat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for everybody. It seems there is a universal experience of losing peripheral fat (Limbs and face) first rather than from waist. It seems also the butts go fast! By the end of the day, everybody will be happy being sleeved and losing extra weight and that extra tyre. -
To avoid quoting a certain brand, please search youtube or google. You will get immense information.

This is not an ad. It is a way I found useful to tone your muscles even if you are weak. You can give it a try in a Gym or in sports shop; then judge for yourself.

Frustrated and need to vent......
drmedhat replied to shanda7182's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PT stands for prothromin time; this measures coagulable or how thin is the blood; it is measured and compared to controls. INR stands for international normalised ratio; it is more sensitive and accurate than PT. -
Decision is sometimes straightforward with only one clue and answer. But having options; particularly considering the sleeve without available long term medical experience makes the decision difficult. It seems all of us passed the same experience. By the end of the day, sleeve seems though irreversible, minimally invasive. Still, if loss of weight is not satisfactory, a complimentary surgery ( duodenal switch or bypass) can be contemplated.

I did not stop drinking my single morning cup of coffee. I hate drinking tea; its taste is completely different!

Try some Icecream of natural fruits. Sweet potato from the oven will run your saliva for one hour while been baked!

Haven't lost any more weight since the initial 1 week post-op
drmedhat replied to susimar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is pretty classically expected. The initial steep drop is basically due to very low calories, limited diet as well as consumption of the immediate source of energy of thebody from the liver (Glycogen) which is very avid to hold water. (this latter is the cause of easy loss of the first 2-3 Kg on any diet) The other factor and probably lasts for two weeks is the active breaking down stage after surgery (catabolic stage). Then you will enter a stage where the body is getting adapted to the new weight and figuring a new level of body weight fighting to lose more weight. Thereafter, You lose or gain according to your net balance of intake and expenditure. It is logic to lose 2-3 Kg / month. Good Luck, be moderate in expectations. -
Fosamax is a medicine used to prevent and treat osteoporosis. There is a warning about its use with recent stomach surgery. It entails taking the tablet on empty stomach with full cup of water, stay upright for one hour, not to eat, drink or lay down for one hour. The leaflet neither the producer site explain for how long after surgery would the medicine be avoided. I am sleeved before one month, regular on steroids (for arthritis) with drugs to prevent bone loss. Any experience in that issue?

Does VSG improve your sex drive???
drmedhat replied to susimar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely not. People actively losing weight have reduced drive especially if coupled by exercise. However, performance and intimacy are great. The sex drive becomes normalised after stabilisation of the weight.
