Thanks. Will do. Both the Water and staying off the scales. I have asked my nutri person about the cream soups and substituting something else and I get the " we have selected these things because they are what is best at this time" . Monday I get to add other things like chicken salad and fish to my diet and I am looking forward to that. Rather sick of soup. However, I can do Jello and cottage cheese instead of soup and I think I will until Monday. Oddly enough, no one in my doctor's office said anything about measuring but I will today. Thanks again Cscake

Yes, I do take synthroid 150 mg. I also take Toprol XL which controls my irregular heart beat. I am down to 1/2 tablet per day and not having any problems and am hoping to get off of it. It does slow down your metabolism somewhat. I am going to the doctor Tuesday and will ask about additional exercise. And, will stay off the scale.

Can you make your own cream Soup by blending a can of vegetable soup (Campbell's) until smooth? I chose Vegetable instead of Beef with Vegetables (would be my first choice) because of the barley. Have five more days of cream Soups, cottage cheese until I can eat some more variety. Thanks

Thanks for all of the great information. I have looked through all of my literature but can't find out how many carbs is too many carbs. I will be two weeks post op Monday. What should I keep it under?

Day 4 Post-Op And Need Some Reassurance...
cscake replied to Mel34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, and with the tank top you can sometimes go without a bra if it bothers you to wear one right now. -
Yes, thirst is a big issue for me. I seem to always be thirsty for water. I am one week out also. And, I am now on full liquids and everything is so darn sweet ! Sweets were not my problem. I am a real food person and salt stuff person. Just tired of everything being sweet. My first bite of cottage cheese was wonderful. I have been having some Campbell's cream soups but the sodium is sooo high. I am off of my diuretic (for blood pressure) but I think the high sodium is a little too high for me. My BP is fine but I really don't like having a little extra fluid.

Day 4 Post-Op And Need Some Reassurance...
cscake replied to Mel34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was Monday, seven days ago, and I have found that the incision where my stomach was removed is a little more painful, like stretching, as you describe. However, I have had two C Sections and have experienced that before. I almost wish I had a "belly band" which hold your stomach when you walk. The jiggling makes it worse. I have a garment kind of like spanx and I think that will help me. Hope your feel better. -
I was sleeved on January 16th. Everything is going pretty well. However, on the way home I noticed that my right calf (the outside) was numb. Really numb. Is this normal? I do have a bad back and a nerve issue but I have never had any numbness.
-
Just an update. First, thank you to all who replied. I sinerely appreciate the comments and concerns. I talked to my physician and he said that it was not unusual and was probably due to my having a nerve problem in that leg compounded by the positioning on the operating table and the straps used to hold me on. I have had no pain, elevated temperature in the thigh or tinderness and those things are associated with a blood clot. Also, my daughter is a nurse and she checked it too. But, as several of you said, you can't be too careful. Oh, I also weighed today and I have lost 10 pounds. yeah ! and I am now able to eat unclear liquids, so cream of brocolli Soup never tasted so good ! Thanks again.
-
So embarrased. The numbness is in the right side of my thigh, not my calf. I have googled it and it is not unusual to have this with abdominal surgery. Something about a subcutaneous nerve being irritated or damaged. So sorry for the scare

I had my surgery on Jan 16th. My question is about the pain that i have when I swallow. It is like I am going to have a really hard burp. I wondered if it was from my hiatal hernia repair? Did anyone else have both and have pain after swallowing? Otherwise I feel pretty good. A little tired but not nearly as bad as two days ago.

"low" Bmi--Are You Likely To Loose Too Much Weight?
cscake replied to seansmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My BMI was low also, but all of my weight was around my middle and behind. Really uncomfortable under my breast area. I am 5'5" and started at 200. I have high blood pressure and other health issues. I think that you will just need to add calories when you get to where you want to stop. My husband lost his weight really fast and then it pretty much stopped, right where he wanted to be. Maybe our bodies know. -
Being Told By Everyone How Much Better Gastric Bypass Is ...
cscake replied to Catracks's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will be four years on January 15. Thank you. I guess my point is that, in my opinion, and I am not a doctor, I think that for most people it is the safest procedure, especially if you have a history of ulcers or your family does. Bariatric surgery is a wonderful thing and a life saver for many people. But, you should be able to decide which procedure you want, based on your physician's recommendation and your own research. If you have a conflict with your physician about the procedure maybe you need a second opinion to help you decide. Good Luck -
Being Told By Everyone How Much Better Gastric Bypass Is ...
cscake replied to Catracks's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My daughter had the bypass surgery. She lost 100 pounds in 6 months. However, she did have a dumping problem and unknown to her she had ulcers in the part of her stomach that was bypassed. This is a real issue for people who have a tendency to have stomach ulcers. Her ulcer went undiagnosed. They thought the horrible pain was a gall bladder attach. She had her gall bladder removed on a Thursday and died on the following Saturday of a perforated ulcer in that part of her stomach. So, for my husband (who had the sleeve done in August) and myself, having the sleeve on January 16th, there was no problem deciding. We went with the sleeve. Not everyone has this problem, but if you have severe pain, even years after, it is imperative that you get to an emergency room and have them call your bariatric surgeon. It could save your life. -
Vomiting After Meals?
cscake replied to NyanBunny56's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband had a difficult time when he began eating. He is 5 months out and is just now able to eat any type of ground meat. He has a tendency to eat a little quickly which does not help. However, he does not eat any Pasta, rice or anything high in carbs. He gets his energy from B12, Protein and his Vitamins. I think some people just have a more difficult time getting adjusted to food. Good luck. -
Question For Women With Large Breasts (sorry Fellas)
cscake replied to Shalon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My daughter had large breasts and lost alot of it. She had to have surgery on them after she finished her weight loss. But, like someone said, everyone is different. -
Hubby Is Being Rude....your Opinion Please
cscake replied to Lisa821's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your plight is interesting. Our daughter had a gastric bypass about 8 years ago. Her starting weight was 300lbs and she was 5'4". Her weight came off pretty fast. What happened to her was that her husband became very critical of how she dressed. It was normal dressing for anyone that was a normal weight. However, it was a problem for him. What actually was happening is that this person who had been very large for all of their marriage (and most of her life) and was very self conscious was beginning to "bloom" during her weight loss. She became a very beautiful girl, very. She did not dress in any way that was inappropriate but I think that he was afraid of the changes he saw. All of this happened at about six months after her surgery. They, like many couple, had some pretty rough times. She wanted to "live" a little (never had) and he was worried about all of it. So, long story short, they both realized that they were the same people and everything was fine. So many couples find that what they are searching for is right there in front of their face. Then when a friend of hers had the surgery and went through the same thing she told her to wait for a few more months and everything would work out. Which it did. This surgery is about more than weight loss, it is about finding the person you really are. So, your husbands reaction is probably a combination of blaming someone else for his weight problem, worrying about the changes he sees in you and what you will do next. So, hang in there and don't let him or his reactions worry you. He was not responsible for your weight problem and you are not responsible for his. Once he realizes he is responsible for his own unhappiness, i.e., being overweight, and does something about it he will be fine. I am sure that after you read this you will realize that I am a grandmother, and as everyone knows, we are the smartest people in the world. Full of great advice that we give whether we are asked to or not ! haha. If you don't believe it just ask our kids. Good Luck and remember, You are a beautiful person inside and out. -
So sorry for your delay. The sad thing is that, now NOT ALL, but alot of people who work in a physician's office don't have any real interest in the patients. I have worked in a physician's office, and a hospital. It just is not like it used to be. But then, the advances in medical care, i.e., sleeve surgery, are much better than they used to be. So I guess it is a trade off. I do sometimes yearn for the old days of health care, but then, we would continue to be overweight. Guess you can't have everything. Like the others said, be your own advocate, and in six months to a year you won't even remember this inconvenience. Good Luck -

Please Do Not Ignore Signs From Your Body!
cscake replied to Happy Camper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad someone asked about drains. My husband did not have any drains either. -
Hello, My surgery date is January 16, 2012. Just like everyone else I am a little nervous. I am 61 (will be 62 in February) and was very thin until around the age of 40. Went from a normal weight of 120 to 198/204. I have dieted using fad diets, diet pills and everything else. Just can't get it off or even keep off the few pounds I lost (very few). I know it is hard for people who have been obese all of their lives but it is also very hard for people who were thin for most of their lives. We are the ones who could always eat anything and everything anytime we wanted. Not so now. I am having the surgery because I have high blood pressure, lots of leg vein pain, snore like a trucker (no offense intended) and wakeup feeling like I am smothering. In addition, I am now built just like my mother who had triple bypass surgery, numerous blood clots in her legs and two pulmonary embolisms. She also struggled to walk for the last 10 years of her life. Many of her problems were from her weight. I am trying to prevent going down that road. Anyway, I have made my decision and have my date so here we go. My husband had the surgery in August and has done very, very well. I have a daughter who had gastric bypass many years ago and two kids who, for health reasons, really need to be sleeved. Both are thinking about it. My husband and I both use a physician in Gonzales, Louisiana. He does nothing but bariatric surgery and has done lots and lots of it. I may have to have my gall bladder out also but we will see. Anyway, that is who I am and where I am going. One thing for sure, our grocery bill has really gone down. lol.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery In January
cscake replied to cscake's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks for all the encouragement ! Can't wait to get rid of the belly. All of my excess is belly and butt. I would have loved to be a health, strong and fit size 14 when I was young. However, I was one of those very thin people who could not walk and chew gum. -
My husband had his sleeve four months ago. Has done very well, lost 80 pounds. Gets his Protein. His problem is that when he eats food that other people have prepared he gets nauseated. I have been watching how he eats and it may still be a little fast. Not sure if that will cause it. It does not seem to when he eats at home. I was wondering if it takes that long for his stomach to get used to solid food. At home he will have baked chicken and green Beans and is OK. Today he had (at the local lunch place) butter beans and a baked chicken leg. He is just now able to eat anything with ground meat in it. Thanks

OK, I need some advice or comments from someone in my shoes or somewhere near them. I currently weight 194 but have been as high as 208. I carry all of my weight in my butt and belly. Until about 20 years ago I was thin. Then my thyroid stopped working, I am on total replacement, and I started having some irregular heart rhythm and high blood pressure and I am on toprol xl to control the irregular heart rhythm and maxzide for high blood pressure and fluid. I hold in alot of fluid. Because my arms and legs are not what you would consider big and I only have about 70 to 80 pounds to lose I am getting some comments from my family about whether or not I should have it or just try to lose it. I have been told that b ecause of the troprol it will be hard for me to exercise it off because my metabolism is very slow. Now, this is the reason I want to have the surgery. I hate my big belly. Never had one until about 20 years ago and it is continuing to grow. My Mother had a hugh belly (not when she was young) and she had all kinds of heart trouble beginning about the age I am. She also had a big problem with fluid, expecially in her legs (where mine is) and then started having blood clots in her legs. We are talking about six in one leg and three in the other (all at one time) She threw a blood clot to her lungs on two separate occasions and did not die. She had a hard time being mobile for the last 10 years of her life. So far I have the beginnings of her big belly (mine sticks out further than my boobs when I sit down) problems with the veins in my legs, they hurt and my feet turn purple, High blood pressure, snore like a freight train, wake up feeling like I am smothering, do not sleep well at all. I just do not want to end up like she did. Should I ignore them, since I have not lost it yet. I talked to my cardiologist and he did not think I was crazy. I am scheduled for January 16th and am just worried about doing the right thing. Would really appreciate some input. Oh, one more thing, my hustand had it in August and has lost 80 pounds, so it is not like I dont know what is coming and what I will have to do without. Thanks a bunch and Merry Christmas.

Thanks for the reply. I do qualify. Although my BMI is below 35 my comorbity qualifies me. My insurance does not pay for any of it so I did not even go that route.

I have a question. I will be sleeved in January and my husband was sleeved last August. As with most husbands and wives I am the "watcher". He has done really well, has lost 77 pounds in four months. (They said it falls off of men) My question is, he gets his 80 gm of protein in a shake every morning. Then his diet consists of the following, cheese, wheat thins and sugar free popsicles and maybe some peanuts, maybe six. If I cook some chicken and a vegetable he will eat a small portion and forgo the wheat thins and cheese but is addicted to the popcicles. He has continued to lose doing this. I was just a little worried about getting what he needs. Hopefully I will not have the same problem. Oh, he also takes his B12, vitamins and calcium faithfully.
