Why do some people regain weight after surgery?
Ms skinniness replied to Ms skinniness's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Here's another one I found..... Your Body Is Happy To Wait For Your Weight To Come Back Regular readers are well aware that losing weight is never a ‘cure’ for obesity – in fact, we know that any weight loss (by whatever means – perhaps with the exception of surgery) leads to hormonal changes that will facilitate weight regain. This is why conventional (diet and exercise) weight-loss strategies sooner or later tend to result in relapse or weight regain. Just how pervasive and multi-faceted these long-term hormonal responses to weight loss are, is demonstrated by Priya Sumithran and colleagues from the University of Melbourne, in a paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In order to examine whether or not changes in the circulating levels of several hormones involved in the homeostatic regulation of body weight persist over time, the researchers studied 50 overweight or obese individuals, who participated in a 10-week very-low-calorie-diet weight-loss program. The 36 subjects, who completed the intervention lost about 14% of initial weight and were still well below initial weight (about 8%) 62 weeks after the start of the study. This weight loss was associated with significant reductions in levels of leptin, peptide YY, cholecystokinin, insulin, and amylin, whereas levels of ghrelin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide, and pancreatic polypeptide increased – most of these changes were still clearly evident at 62 weeks. In addition, subjective levels of hunger increased and remained significantly elevated at 62 weeks. Thus, the authors note that: “One year after initial weight reduction, levels of the circulating mediators of appetite that encourage weight regain after diet-induced weight loss do not revert to the levels recorded before weight loss.” Given these profound and persistent hormonal changes that affect hunger, appetite, and metabolism, it should come as no surprise that maintaining weight loss is so difficult. It certainly seems like the homeostatic system is happy to wait for the weight to come back – even if this takes several months or even years. As I have noted before, the challenge in obesity treatment is never how to lose weight – it is all about how to keep it off. This is why, I am never too enthusiastic about new diets or medications that promise to help lose weight – unless these diets or medications also counteract or effectively block the counter-regulatory responses seen in this study, chances are that they will be ineffective in the long term. Or, as the authors put it: “..successful management of obesity will require the development of safe, effective, long-term treatments to counteract these compensatory mechanisms and reduce appetite. Given the number of alterations in appetite-regulating mechanisms that have been described so far, a combination of medications will probably be required.” We do not really need new treatments for weight loss – we do, however, need treatments for weight-loss maintenance or for keeping patients in ‘remission’. Unfortunately, the regulators still do not appear to have a pathway for approving drugs that will help with the latter. AMS Edmonton, Alberta Hat tip to Bill Colmers for pointing me to this article. How was your 5:2 day today?
Ms skinniness replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Cheri good job on your fasting! It is really hard especially with a little one that's struggling with acid reflux in the night. Loss of sleep does cause and increase in hunger.....You will see goal again, you are very determined and focused and that will bring you to goal.... I do hope GT can check in soon and let us know how she's doing. I miss her. -

The sugar monster had got his grip on you! LOL This so happens to me. I realized after numerous times that when I eat sugar, I retain weight. So I try to remind myself but it doesn't always work..... Oh I love cookies too...... -

I have a meeting with my case manager at Kaiser for my bariatric department and I'm going to tell her about the 5:2 plan. This is my first official appointment with her in person since my surgery on Oct 4, 2011. It will be interesting. If it's just a bunch of how are you doing, it will be my last appointment with her. I will also be a guest speaker at her meeting which I think will be very interesting and scarey, I hate public speaking. I will just picture them all naked! LOL Today I weighed myself on a non fast day and I actually lost some weight. I was at 147 lbs yesterday and today i am at 146.3 lbs. What a wonderful surprise. Maybe it's because I ate low calorie and very low sugar....Hehehehehe..... Today is my fast day, need to get down to at least 145 lbs and then who knows where I'll go with my weight loss. -

Is there *really* a honeymoon period?
Ms skinniness replied to musiclover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So what is the honeymoon period? Good question. I believe it is up to us to make the best of the first 7 months and to keep being vigilant about what we eat for the rest of our lives....Yep....this is work but well worth it. you will lose this weight even if you are a slow loser. In fact, you might have less excess skin due to losing at a slower pace which is a hughe benefit....... Follow your surgeons and NUT plan and you will lose the weight........ -
I love ordering eggs a la carte.....or as an addition to someone who I'm dining with. It's so cheap and I don't have left over food......
-
Perhaps weigh yourself once a week on the same day and at the same time.......
-
Stay off the stupid scale!! It will drive you crazy. You are doing just fine and losing weight at a good pace. Sit back and watch the lbs disappear and your pants fit one morning and in the afternoon, bam! They start sliding off and are rather baggy. Drink as much water as you can and eat high protein and you will do this.......

Need to get back on track!
Ms skinniness replied to nashiemmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go back to basics. Eat Proteins and some veggies. When I want to get back on track and detox my body, I basically eat nothing but proteins. I will drink my Protein drinks and have weighed out portions of my food.... If you need a little bit of help here is a basic Bootcamp Diet from LilMissDiva: The BASICS BOOTCAMP: For 5 STRICT DAYS I will eat only... Proteins: Seafoods, Poultry and eggs, Dairies, nuts/seeds including Peanut Butter. Veggies: Green only. Fruits: None. Breads/Cereals/Other Carbs: None. Fluids: One gallon of Water (128 oz.) or Protein Drinks. Avoid: Sugar and Sodium Once the 5 days are over, I am pretty much over the Sugar Carb Demon. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate carbs! I do need them to live a healthy life and since I workout a lot it is important I have them. However, I need GOOD carbs. Whole grains, fruits, veggies... But I don't need processed sugars. White carbs, in cereals, breads, rice... etc. It is very affective too........Let me know what you think. -
Discuraged & Depressed!
Ms skinniness replied to amsenegal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have done a great job so keep it up.....Do try and find a protein drink that you can tolerate because you do need a lot of protein to help with weight loss......I love the Premier Chocolate Protein Shake from Costco or Sam's Club. I'm a really picky eater too. Have you tried those? Also take a sip and wait for a few minutes and take another sip. Your stomach is still really swollen and so it's really a necessity to sip always. Try some Gatorade Low Calorie, that helped me with getting in more fluids...... Great job so far! Keep it up! -

Georgia and ntvtx is absolutely correct. You can only do this for yourself. Everything you put in ur mouth is your choice. Make better choices of proteins and veggies. Log your food no matter what you eat. Get movin more and don't beat yourself up! This is a learning curve and you've for this!
