Resturant Card To Print Out
Pookeyism replied to Looking Ahead's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used to want one, but now I prefer to not mention it - but good to have it! -
Wow, that is crazy good! I might be there, but haven't made up my mind yet, lol. If I lose 25 more lbs I will be right at 165 lbs.

My First 10 Lb Loss Is Bittersweet
Pookeyism commented on blossom12's blog entry in blossom12's Blog
I understand TOTALLY - two of the most supportive women I know is struggling and trying - it hurts to see it. One began losing before I even tried my "final" diet in January of '11 - was stalled and still crazy supportive and cried when we found out I had a stomach tumor (how I went about finally deciding on WLS) - but has not gave up, but feels the surgery is not for her, but I fear it is because it would be self pay and her business is struggling right now Another started her diet in order to "follow me" - but can never get past the first twently pounds, she is yo-yoing in about 4-6 week unp and downs... I want them to succeed so bad, but neither are in a position or claim to want the surgery, so I walk with them, talk with them, juice and eat healhy with them, and pray for us all, everyday! -
Has Anyone Changed Surgeons ?
Pookeyism replied to valdostaGA's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I did but I did not have insurance paying (most), but after having so much difficulty with the doctor BEFORE we even went into the preliminary tests, I opted to go with another doctor. -
whoa! Don't but another animal to keep an animal occupied, especially one that is 6 years difference...that would be like handing a 35-ish person a toddler and go "enjoy". We have an organic farm at home and Hubby's mom is an exceptional handler for dogs (and horses) I actually just called her and she totaly encourages you to adopt a second animal, but be aware of the age, situation, and breed vs. breed you are introducing and get it from a shelter that will let them interact a few times before you commit. She's the dog whisperer, lol - but I am 6 months out on the sleeve - and I suggest you hold off till after the sleeve. Off my soapbox.

Hi! Does Anyone Know Of An App Tbat Helps Keep Track Of Daily Protein, Fluid Intake, Etc.
Pookeyism replied to misslisa810's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PS - my name is the same on there if you want to add me... Runtastic is another app that I like - it is good too to just know where you are! It will keep track of exactly where you have been, your pace, etc.... -
Has anyone who has lost weight and was still type 2 diabetic discussed the ileal interposition as a possible surgery to "cure" diabetes? Or went in to discuss WLS as an option to cure diabeties, and this was mentioned instead of or in addition to the sleeve? I gentleman who is a lodge brother to my Hubby is not overwhelmingly overweight, but has no real desire to eat less, but does try to control his diabeties. WLS is not the answer for him right now, if ever. He does wish to possibly explore the il inter. Now, I understand that those 30 lbs he is carrying around is not helping, and I think he would find a bit of success and avoid trouble later by addressing that now - so yes, I agree with you on that (probably before you type it, lol). BUT I am talking about doctors offfering a surgery to cure diabeties in patients who are thin, relatively thin, or only moderately obese. He is almost 6'6 so 30 lbs on him is not what it is on, say a 5'9" man). I do not know if it has been said to do anything for type I - - The causes are different, so the same cure is unlikely. I am also in no way trying to instill false hope or encourage another whole surgery, or replace VST - I just thought we have a cross section of people here, many have varying weights in their families, and some have took seriously bad type II diabeties into near-remission, but just cannot totally shake it - between it all I thought I might gleam a bit from someone who has either had the procedure, knew someone, discussed it, etc...

Good, Bad, Ugly And Te-Riffing About The Vsg!?
Pookeyism replied to Vixkey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are soooo many positives that I do think we fail to mention the lesser times, or stress the harder parts you will have to deal with. When you have an NSV (non-scale victory) - which you will have in abundance, these are the best times! They are great - you will have your own but they range from smaller sizes, to sittingin booths, no extenders in car seats, buying regular boots and more...I recently took my first full acro yoga "play" - google it! I never thought that could be me. There are times that are not so easy, when you need to draw away, or compliments are too overwhelming, or you have to deal with not having your fatsuit anymore - with the help of a friend (a real counselor but my unofficial one) that my reluctance to go shopping, while it seems to be a consistent thing (I disliked shoppong before, too - not a real girly type) is not really...I disliked shopping before because the plus-sized girl shops didnt carry te clothing I liked, and the mens big and tall was cut too long, and as I lost weight and still genuinely didnt want to shop I told myself "see? You really just dislike shopping!" - but not so, I realize most of it at this point is that I can't "see" myself as the size I am, and it is doing a number on my head to buy clothing I cant imagine wearing. I went into Old Navy and bought a medium dress and a size 12 dress...that makes 14-12 sizes I have lost in 18 months, most in the last 6 months. You will have head hunger, and you may need to learn to identify or at least question if you are experiencing passive-aggressive tendencies in people around you. You will (probably - most of us did) have to learn to say "NO" to people more often, we gave so much, and hid our insecurities inside - now we need to still be good, try to maintain nice, but still say no when needed. No, no drive through. No, it is not okay to keep that food in the house. No, lets not meet up there, there is nothing healthy there. No, I don't want to sit with you on the couch, I want US to take a walk...that sort of thing.. Wow, I could write a book, lol - I have been thinking about this stuff a lot lately... -
My Surgery Is Tomorrow Monday 7/9/12
Pookeyism replied to KikiCC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, lets go over the basics - make sure you have your stuff for the hospital, a ride home, someone to either stay with you or be close if you need them, AND to check up on you and follow up on you if you can't reach them. YOu don't need to buy an overwheming amount of powders yet - have Jello, popcicles, clear broth and such waiting at home for the first few days - and either a protien powder (get one meant for bariatric patients and low on carbs - avod the weight lifting stuff. have a chewable Multivitamin, and I suggest a sublingual B complex drop. Water and protien is essential, but WATER is the make or break on your first couple of days - yo uwill just feel so bad without it. Walk after surgery, but not alone, it releaves the pressure. Discuss in advnce the pain medicine you will be administered, and have something ready for nausea already assigned and waiting at the nurses station where your room will be. Ask for a second option on pain meds, should the first not work. I was given alot of really strong stuff, but it was geared to knocking me out I feel more than pain management, which is what you need after this surgery. I finally had it changed to hydrocodone liquid, sipped very slow and found by doing so only needed 1/2 of the recommended dosage. Beyond walking, give yourself several days. Some don't but this is major abdominal surgery, so give your body a break and walk alot but be good to yourself. That is a start - I hope it helps. -

Juicing And The Sleeve
Pookeyism replied to Natty76's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Juicing is super good! Don't forget to add your herbs and other small things that can make a juice! Cayenne pepper, bee pollen, orange juice, honey (forget about the carbs if you are about a month or so past and you get an OK - honey and such and in moderation are good carbs!) nectarine and papaya is a great juice/smoothy - you put the papaya in last frozen and blend wit what you juiced - and the cayenne perrer and bee pollen at the papaya stage, too. Look for local juice bars, too - you can try juices before going our and spending alot. When you are busy, and a regular, you can usually begin to get a deal on your juice, too - enough to last a couple of days, but it is best fresh. Another thing - take your oum container and see if they offer a green discount - that is, a small discount for a refill rather than throw away - and they save on the cost of a cup, lid and straw. If you are anywhere near Houston try Juicy in the Sky...most awesome juice bar! -
Has anyone been able to get off of assistance after WLS? I mean diability pay, or other forms of subsidized living? It was a question posed to me at lunch, and I didn't really have an answer for it. Added : Is there anyone out there that will or has been able to remove themselves from subsidized pay that they were living on pre-sleeve, after experiencing relief from symptoms due to being obese? Does anyone have this as a goal?

What Are Your Exercise Plans This Weekend?
Pookeyism replied to VACookey's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I do swordsplay with foam (yes, foam) swords, rattan caning, and real swords, among others- just at different times with different groups. The foam is with a group like the SCA kinda - but think less drama, much more mellow, and the weapons arent guaranteed to bust open my stomach at the first jab (dagorhir - you can google it.) -

Can i suggest not worrying about how much you do, as much as doing it? Promise, promise, promise, just moving, just going, is good too - find some things you love, and GET OUT OF THE GYM...lol I realized I had waited for this too long to spend hours in a gym, not knocking it for all the gymaddics, but this part of it, the getting out and doing - wasn't that what it was about, anyway? -

Pookeyism replied to VACookey's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Acro-Jam, baby! lol - hula-hoops (dance not kids), poi, contact juggling and flower-sticks and some yoga afterwards in the park near the Menil Collection, and a bike ride over to the outdoor sympony, and then a kind-of pub crawl, except we don't drink so much as get waters and coffee and juiced green goodness...thats tonight. Bike in the AM, and after work gardening and *hopefuly* dancing till I drop later! I volunteer dog-walk every other saturday - I think that is this weekend. Sunday will be full recovery mode till afternoon, when I have my swordsmanship practice. -
LOl - if you enjoy it go with it! don't forgrt alot of the protien powders go good with milk. you can also add artificially sweetened syrups and such and make wonderful milk-drinks. Mootopia can be found at most HEB's and is 50% less sugar, lactose free and has 12g protien for 8 oz.

Maybe I Shouldn't Do This
Pookeyism replied to NHJulie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go to the meeting, start your planning, and start dieting...if you find you do need the surgery, you are on your way, if not, it was worth the gamble - you should be going to the doctor if you are on a diet, anyway. I started a diet in January '11 "the final one!!!"....abotu 7 months later I had lost a bit of weigh, but not much, and a little bit more and a few months later I was diagnosed with at tumor in my tummy - so my decision was helped somewhat - but I had already begun to realize I needed help. This isn't the crazy-big step so many people attribute to it - you would have to do everything we are doing. and do it for the rest of your life in order to keep the weight off - with the exception we have a couple of years where there is a strong change in our anatomy and we have to adjust - but change after awhile becomes normal, if you work at it - NOT effortless, normal - the effort is normal, the trials and tribulations - normal...the healthy day to day feeling, taking our lives back...normal! Good luck in your decision - I wont try to talk you into it our out - but I would be glad to talk to you if you need it. -
I think you are maybe confusing some things, so calm down, and stay calm, and get clarification - get it on an email so you can reference it again and again - to keep yourself calm. It sounds like you may have to take Heparin or something similar, it is not terribly uncommon, given certain medical histories. The bag is not medicine, I think. I think you are referring to the JP drain or similar, and it is put into your abdomen at the time of surgery to assist in fluids draining and to help catch leaks...the doctor may have even mentioned food coloring your Water blue and such - it becomes very readily apparent if you have a leak it you see blue Fluid in the drain. Your doctor seems to have prescribed several precautions for you - to make you safe, comfortable, and stay that way - just talk them over with him...and breathe! You are on your way!

Don't be afraid to pack your own, I have some beautiful bento boxes and soup cannisters now - to me it makes it feel less improvised. Let Hubby order, and sip away, or ask for a bowl...

Diabetics/hbp Meds On The Pre-Op Diet
Pookeyism replied to TinaMari's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was a controlled diabetic for 4 years prior to surgery, and had dropped almost 40 lbs before surgery, so we (endo, surgeon and me) decided to take me totally off my injection 3 days before and stop by metformin the night before. I have never took either since, and rarely go out of 70-120 range (I dip low a bit, however). The doctor said part of it was my bone/muscle density, and that my weight was centered in my abdomen, and I had lost alot ot the "center line". I had fought to keep my a1c below 6.2 and it was usually in the 5's, so all of this contributed, I think. I am in complete remission, per my doctor's explination, because I am not just under control on a real low carb diet - I can eat a regular amount of carbs and be ok (ugh - but really don't like the way the carbs makes my tummy feel). If you do not have an actual endocrinologist (sp?) you may want to gather your records and see a good one. -
OMG, can we stamp this on half the people I know? Right.on.their.freakin'.heads.

This is really brief, and by no way intended to be something you rely on BUT: You need to step back - seriously. I have seen this is in so many people, and it was one of the major factors in me avoiding surgery for years and years. You are going through a narcissistic phase (I am NOT A DOCTOR OR COUNSELOR) that I have hear referred to as "if I had always been thin" - it is OK, you can't help but be overwhelmed, but you should, especially since a child is involved, step back and recognize that YOU and HER are overwhelmed - you lost weight, she held a fertilized egg in her uterus, developed it through to a baby, went through an incredible amout of hormonal change, gave birth, and her body will be regulating for months. You dont have to react to her berating, just pay attention to the dynamics her father and her have and avoid those triggers - also - get the hell out of that house. Don't make any life decisions yet. oh, yeah - the affair you have either had or are seriously thinking about having - don't.
