One of the things I stopped doing before surgery and have so far been able to keep up and I think I have benefitted greatly from doing so is no soda, at all, sugar no sugar - nada. Another is avoiding processed drinks. I just don't do them. May I recommend you try a 2 liter container, chop up 2 lemons, several thin slices of cucumber and rough chop about a half cup of mint. let it set for at least 4- hours in the fridge. It's a refreshing burst of detox.

Pre-VSG lack of support from parents
Pookeyism replied to jenRRT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends a bit on why they are pressing like that. Some of us have some genuinely passive-aggressive people in our lives, and you are not going to get past that. You may need to make it an "off limits" discussion. Basically,"pftttttt, zip lip Mom and Dad (Love you, lol)." -
What do you think about straws
Pookeyism replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"multiply the body weight in kilograms by .8, or weight in pounds by .37. This is the number of grams of Protein that should be the daily minimum" Depending on how long it is after surgery, you will need a bit more for awhile to facilitate healing, and if you become very active you will need to keep that in mind also. -
I don't think you need to put yourself through the pouch test. Dont take it wrong but you have your answer in your post. Your eating habits are worsening and you aren't exercising as much. Water and sleep are essential. Measure your door to your elliptical, if you just need to take the door off the joints you can do that easily. If not conact the manufacturer and get the instructions on partial disassembly. You may need to bring the elliptical in on the side, feeding the back in, and then turning that a bit and sliding the height in after the based is hooked past the door (the best I can think to explain). Get all bad habit foods out of the house, "anything you would not have had in the first 3 months, you shouldn't have now" to quote a very sucessful sleever. In the meantime, walk, walk, walk, walk. Good luck. This is a lifestlye for you now, not a diet, focus on that and make long-term mindful decisions about what you will and will not eat any longer.

Did you lose weight and get shorter
Pookeyism replied to mrdr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did not lose any height, but I think where so much of my weight was abdominal (I was a complete apple) I think I compensated for the small height loss by being able to straighten out my posture. -
It is definately do-able, but you will have to look for it. I have been told (but so far do not do) that once you train yourself off refined sugar AND sweetener you will no longer miss it. So far it is true with refined sugar. the taste is so alien to me now. Bleh. It also hurts my tummy. There are natural sweetener options out there, as well as just focusing on getting your protien from unpowdered sources. I wish I had opted for this route sometimes. I am at work right now but if you are interested maybe we could do some research and experiment and see what options are out there. It would be some really helpful informaton to have on here!

Did you lose weight and get shorter
Pookeyism replied to mrdr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not had anyone mention this yet. My hubby says I feel more petite (whatever that means at 5'10"). I think being heavy on certain frames can definatey make a tall person look taller...and It sounds funny but also you may look less menacing. I had a friend who was 6'6" drop 60 lbs and cut his hair and shave his beard and stop wearing tinted prescription glasses so you could see blue eyes, and he literally just transformed into another person, and yes, looked a little 'shorter'. -
why do people hide it?
Pookeyism replied to KayCTheNewMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is. You don't have to have a reason to not tell, anymore than a reason to tell. -
If you want I would be glad to get with some friends of mine (yoga teachers, and occupational/rehab specialist) and see what we could come up with. Focus on your legs and arms without straining your neck. It sounds like you need to just be very aware of what muscle sets you are activating in your routines, and then do the exercises carefully so they keep from activating the muscles you have injured. Good luck, and I hope you are able to get to the root of the pain in your neck.

YES YES YES. Love to hear things like this. The clothes, the compliments, NOTHING compares to just doing things, just being out and being awesome. I have been a yogi for 20+ years, but after surgery I have totally redefined my practice, and will begin my Yoga teacher training about this time next year. I will be riding 40 miles in the Livestrong Challenge on my 40th birthday.

I am 20 months out and for over a year now I have stuck with my gummy multi, mainly because they are super mild and I have found that very few people who take them have any rejection issues with them. I buy them in bulk, cause I know how many I will take over a period of time, and I save some cash that way, too. I do not worry about calcium at this point. I use almond milk in my coffee and smoothies (I keep bags of fresh overripe fruit now, and drink alot of smooties!). And at 30 calories for 8 oz it is great. It has plenty of calcium. Also regular walking and very modest weight lifting will help your body retain calcium, and strengthen bone. I am on an almost totally raw veggie and fruit lifestyle 9about 80%), I cannot call it vegan at all cause I do not avoid animal products nor do I avoid consuming them when I feel I need extra protien, etc. I try to adhere to he "color wheel" for my fruits and veggies. The below is copied from a brief article and I attached the link at the bottom. This routine, I feel is the best "multi" anything you can consume. "The "5 A Day-The Color Way" campaign focuses not only on eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but also from 5 different colors. Blues/purples include blueberries, blackberries, purple grapes, prunes, raisins and eggplants. They contain flavonoids, phytochemicals and antioxidants such as anthocyanins, Vitamin C, folic acid and polyphenols. White vegetables include garlic, chives, onion, cauliflowers and potatoes. White fruits are bananas and pears. Reds such as tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, raspberries, red apples and kidney and red Beans contain antioxidants lycopene and anthocyanins. Greens are rich in phytochemicals and essential Vitamins, minerals and Fiber. They include spinach, leafy greens, kiwifruit and honeydew melon. Yellow and orange vegetables and fruits include carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges, papaya and pineapple. They contain beta-carotene, Vitamin C, vitamin E, folate and bioflavonoids." http://www.livestrong.com/article/216311-the-five-color-diet/

I can't tell you that you are ready, that is something for you to decide. I say this after about 10 years of researching one surgery, then deciding no, looking into the "next", and again no...maybe? back to the doc's office...no...and finally- BAM! Stomach tumor, it had to come out anyway. I regret nothing...n...o...t...h..i...n...g, however. I can't say I wish I had it sooner, cause I think I was not ready, and the surgery was not ready so to speak (I did not hear of VST till 2 1/2 years ago). I can say I DO wish I was ready and it had been available when I was 27!!!

Fresh fruits and veggies post-op
Pookeyism replied to QueenCityGal's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was sleeved January 4th, 2013 and by this time last year I was at about 50% Fruits and veggies, raw and cooked. I am, since January, about 80% raw veggies. A little bit of everything, generally organic and seasonal. Nuts and berries too, in moderation. What I have found, this far out, is I no longer want the foods I ate. I just want what will make me feel good and hydrated and provide calories and Vitamins, minerals and yes protien (10% roughly would be meat, lean). My breakdown, I think: 85-88% raw veggies/fruit (including melon, nuts, roots) 2-5% cooked veggies, leguemes, NO GRAINS NO REFINED SUGARS 10% meats I do not count calories at all. The only thing I actively monitor is Water, sleep, and make sure I get a variey of colors, which means I am covering all my nutrients and such. -
most awesome feeling!

Edamame (?sp) wondering if anyone post op eats this? Do you like?
Pookeyism replied to adargie's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
They are awesome, but do not have to be dry. melons are excellent snacks this time of year, and cucumbers with a tart yogurt are most awesome. Hummus, seaweed, nom, nom. dates pureed and a dollop on a frozen peach sliced thin is just perfect in the heat. -
How long till you felt human
Pookeyism replied to pjknitts's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Mom passed away unexpectedly a week after surgery, and then I had complications, so for me it was a process. It sounds odd but I just put one foot in front of the other for a very long time, and I am not entirely sure when that changed. It was gradual and some days were better than others. It's a journey! Be kind to your body - brush your hair and take a shower just a tad bit colder than you want...breath deep and be ok with how you feel. -
I hope you can ride thise rides! The surgery kinda killed the scrambler for me yay for you on your surgery!

Self pay in Houston - covered in part because of hernia
Pookeyism replied to Bredred's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
My only concerns would be having to return over and over to an out-of-network doctor if yo uhad issues with the hernia. -
Self pay in Houston - covered in part because of hernia
Pookeyism replied to Bredred's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hmmm...I had a tumor and it paid in part with self pay. What I did was chose a doctor and got the flat amounts Humana would cover up-front in writing, and then took it off the flat-rate for WMS, with a little extra because I had to have extra exploratory time in surgery to be sure the tumor had not spread. -
Very vocal anti-WLS aquaintance is on this site...
Pookeyism posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
She was apparently sleeved not too long ago and has decided to keep it hidden. What she isn't mentioning to people on here is that she is really super harsh and makes fun of people who cannot "do it on their own". Almost no one knows she was sleeved. Also, she will be very shocked to find out that I now know she trolls VST and reads my posts and posts of her other friends that she then puts down for having the surgery. You would DIE if you knew who slipped your secret. I wanted to offer you a chance to stop saying the nasty, critical things you say while acting like you are "just changing old habits". And, yes, I really enjoy the thought of you peeing your pants as you troll this post. So with that said - has anyone else had this happen? I would not put much past this person, but it still seems so extreme. I never dreamed anyone would be this passive aggressive. -
Stalled for a month....
Pookeyism replied to MK1986's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The frustration of a stall is very real. The best bet thing to do is to just review your habits. Try a food tracking app if you don't already. review the Water you are getting in, the sleep (sleep is really important). Get away from any of the foods we tend to let slip back in, the miscellaneous breads and grains - nutritionally they do almont nothing and provide no nutrients or Fiber that cannot be gained somewhere else. People love to hear a calorie is a calorie, there for a pund is a pound. This is so very untrue. Just as anyone who has ever noticed the gas mileage in a car drop as it goes along, can relate to a calorie in vs. calorie out just is not how this works. search the topics already in here, there are several with many good ideas. You will break your stall. You are probably losing inches anyway, btw!!! -
July 1 sleevers- are we getting ready?
Pookeyism replied to ewhitt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't stock up on the popsicles too early, the sugar-free ones break down really fast. bleh! Good luck!
