This works so well! For the first few days I used a pillow, as the healing progressed I could just press the palm of my hand on my large incision site to hold everything still for a cough. Coughing is a good thing, so let them out!

OMG My Home Scale is a Liar!
Matt Z replied to Love2Travel816's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ok, question. Where you wearing the exact same thing on each scale? If you weight in nude on one, and then fully dressed with shoes on the other, you could have a approx 5 lbs swing, couple that with any liquids or food you've consumed between weigh ins... 19lbs is a lot, but you can get pretty close factoring in some things. If you wore exactly the same thing on each scale, and didn't consume anything... then yes that's pretty wild of a swing. If your home scale is digital, anytime you pick it up, you really need to "re-calibrate" it, it can take 3-5 consecutive weigh ins to get the scale back on point. For suggestions, I'm found of my FitBit Aria scale. Mainly because it tracks body fat (I know someone is going to say that's not accurate, but for *TREND* tracking, it's effective) and the scale updates my FitBit dashboard with the weights and measurements for easy tracking. It's important to limit variables with weigh-ins, for me, I weigh in pretty much at the same time every morning, after doing the exact same things, and wearing the exact same thing (nothing, sorry for the grim visual). So, I know weight is going to be as accurate as possible. For the body fat %'s, I get that it might be less accurate, but that's where trend tracking comes in, I don't care really what number is showing, so long as it's lower than the day before and that trend continues. A decreasing trend means I'm losing body fat, no matter what the numbers actually are, hope this helps! -
Frustrated-husband sleeved too but losing more with less healthy food
Matt Z replied to HappyRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's a tough one. But it's shown over and over, if you don't change your habits you **WILL** rebound. Sounds like he's thinking he's got a magic wand... but he'll be the sad one when he ends up gaining weight back while you with your new habits have a much higher chance of keeping it off. Have you asked him why he doesn't change his habits? Point him to all the "Failed" sleeves and how that failure is due to not changing those bad habits. Good Luck, that's a tough situation, but... he's on the wrong side of things. -
Best Chewable vitamins to fight hair loss
Matt Z replied to annanay1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Biotin, but there are some conflicting reports of it not actually doing anything (I still take it daily). It's important to note that hair loss can be caused by stress and not a deficiency in vitamins as well. The stress associated with a major surgery can cause your body to pump out hormones that cause our hair to enter a "resting" phase. So, it's possible that no matter what you take, it won't have an actual effect on your potential hair loss. I'm hoping against hope that I don't lose anything, it's taken me quite a while to get my hair where it is now... and I don't want to lose a bunch of the beard either! Good luck! https://www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietitian/understanding-hair-loss-after-bariatric-surgery/ "telogen effluvium has to do with stress to the body and hormonal changes that can occur. Due to the stress more hair follicles can enter into the resting phase. This is important because the hair in the resting phase at the time of surgery is most likely the hair you will shed. This is why your hair sheds between 1 to 6 months after surgery (usually about3 to 4 months). When the hair starts to grow again the old hair follicle is released and you lose hair. Sometimes the hair comes out before new hair grows, yikes!" -
I'm found of Muscle Milk Light for flavors but watch the calories (Actually watch the calories and sodium on all flavored proteins) Isopure has some good flavors as well, I'm using Isopure unflavored as an extra boost to things. I also take Gold Standard Casein at night to help with muscle production.

Mourning the person you saw in the mirror
Matt Z replied to CaribeRidge's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@CaribeRidge That's an interesting concept, I always leaned more toward the depression being caused by a major change that once you kick off, you don't really have any control over. That and all the addictions we have with food, even if it's not a major one, the whole "head hunger" factor, and the fact that you cannot eat everything you want the way you did before were the major causes for post op depression. Personally, I'm glad to see that fat, nasty, heavy breathing, lazy, unhappy behemoth no longer return to any mirror anywhere ever. -
Started weight lifting and I'm now starving every 2/2.5 hours
Matt Z replied to whitmac's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Your fear is understandable. And yes, you might gain weight at first... BUT, Larger muscles use more calories at rest than smaller ones, so, building muscles will eventually cause you to lose weight faster than if you hadn't built those muscles at all. Also, not sure what water metric your doc has you hitting... but you should be getting upwards of 128oz a day... your body needs water to process and remove fat, you might be ok where you are, but consistently getting more water *WILL* help you flush toxins and process more fat. But yes, you need protein, and calories, and water, and bigger muscles to burn more fat. It won't be an instant result and odds are you will gain slightly up front... but it will work itself out in the long run. -
The feeling is amazing right! Congrats... Now onto 250!

Something weird started happening ....
Matt Z replied to Mattymatt's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
A Dr. posted here that water will not cause dumping syndrome. The symptom might be the same, but the cause seems to be something different. https://www.thinnertimesforum.com/topic/80704-will-drinking-water-cause-dumping-syndrome/ -
And to think... she's already seen you naked!

*All of the Above* Give yourself at least a month before swelling really goes down. But then, please understand that not everyone loses weight from the same places at the same rate. Typically arms and legs thin out first, the stomach is almost always the last to start to show reduction. Again, everyone is different. Just make sure you are doing everything you are supposed to be doing and you'll be just fine.

These are only effective if you don't have stones already. I have stones (had before RNY) and I was told that the medication to prevent wouldn't work, because the stones already exist. Stone pain sucks, my biggest attack that landed me in the ER, I thought was a heart attack, even though it was on the wrong side... Apple cider / Apple Juice (and apple cider vinegar) help with stones, Malic Acid in the apple juice helps soften the gallstones.

Do Protein shakes count as water intake?
Matt Z replied to Allformyprincesas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't personally count it. I use milk in my shakes not water, so... I just don't count it as water. But, lots do. That said, 40 oz of water only 7 days post-op is really good. -
I would seriously get to a doctor, port site pain and a tight feeling are not good signs. As far as doctors not taking patients because of where they were banded, if you have a doctor that tells you they won't treat you, I'd ask them if they remember their Hippocratic Oath...

Well, not sure what surgery you had, you didn't list which, your profile isn't updated. Posting the same question all over isn't the best way to get answers sadly. Looks like you were already given plenty of ideas on how to get back in the race, but on top of all of the assistance already provided, Have you talked with your surgeon or nutritionist recent? No idea what your stats are, but odds are your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) has decreased. It decreases as we get older and it decreases as we get thinner. Your BMR is the amount of calories you require just to be alive (Think, in a coma, alive but not moving) if you are exercising, getting your 64-128oz of water and are monitoring your food intake, tracking your calories... then it's pretty simple math. If Burn = more than Consumed then you will lose weight. So, check that BMR https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr Track your intake, Track your exercise and make sure that you burn more calories than you eat per day. And drink more water! Our bodies cannot process fat if it doesn't have enough water to do so!

Feeling depressed and unable to drink.
Matt Z replied to jrsone's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I guess just reassure her that it will pass. To continue to take those sips as often as possible, and to remember that it'll be ok and that the struggle is worth it. Good luck to the both of you! -
Something weird started happening ....
Matt Z replied to Mattymatt's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@Mattymatt I can't speak to the hot flashes when drinking too quickly, might be expansion causing some pressure on a nerve or something. For the "Fake sugar" might be your new "norm". I know for me it's added sugars that get me and HFCS. I have to watch this stuff super close, but natural sugars don't do a damn thing. I can get so many strawberries and not have a single issue... I found that if I eat certain things to quickly it'll cause dumping as well, even if the sugar count is lower than 5 grams. It's crazy how much changes. Personally, it's helping me eat much better. Have you discussed the water issue with your PCP or Surgical Team? -
Lapband to bypass waiting on insurance blah
Matt Z replied to swimmer0302's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Pretty much the same story here. Banded in 2011, lost 70 lbs, various issues with foods, etc etc etc. My initial approval was denied because Insurance required a 6 month medically supervised diet, so I did all that, and it took 2-3 weeks for the approval the second time around. My Revision Surgery was on March 21st. As long as you jumped through their hoops, you should be all set! -
The one thing you could not live without post surgery
Matt Z replied to Oceanlove's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In what world does “inaccurate info “beat the ants off of not having any at all”?! It’s the same darn thing. It's ***ALWAYS*** better to have SOMETHING rather than NOTHING in regards to trend tracking. If you believe that Zero information is the same as SOME information... well, that's a whole different conversation. Think of it this way. If I didn't know the starting measurement for something... anything. And I kept tracking measurements of that thing daily, even if my instrument wasn't 100% accurate. And every day I see that there is a decrease in whatever I'm measuring, and that number continues to decrease... that proves that the trend is a decline. Doesn't matter what the actual numbers are, if the **TREND** is showing a decrease, then that's what's happening. Taking measurements at the same time everyday helps reduce variations in measurement. Doing the same things before taking the measurements, ensuring that all variables have been reduce to the bare minimum, helps reduce variations in measurement. Reducing variables to their minimums, reducing variations to their minimums, keeping all constants the same, all these things help to provide the best possible trend data. So yes, having SOME information, even if it's not 100% accurate, is much more beneficial than not having any information at all. And to be honest, the variations we are talking about here are negligible for our purposes. -
Eating everything in moderation
Matt Z replied to annanay1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can't see what emoji you used, but it was bad. Cold sweats, explosive diarrhea, nausea, light headed, stomach/intestinal cramping, and then when I was good and cleaned out, it was like I couldn't move I was so tired and drained. It was like getting the flu, all at once, just without vomiting. -
Good Day BariatricPal denizens! I've got an odd issue, I've got a follow up with my surgeon here in 2 weeks, but I figured I'd Poll the Audience in the mean time. Since shortly after my surgery, I don't recall exactly when I noticed, but about a month now I figure, I've had this spot on my leg (Right leg, on the front/outside area of my shin not far below the knee) that I've lost sensation in, I can feel pressure, but that's about it. And it's ONLY on the outside and only a small circular area, about an inch or 2 across or so. Originally the tissue underneath was giving me issues, it was painful to put pressure on, so certain exercise machines would be painful to use because of the pressure placed on this area. Still dealing with the lack of sensation, I've found a LOT of information about all sorts of possible causes, didn't know if anyone else has had experience with this or not. Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Stay Strong!

Might be, but my spot is below the knee, everything I've read about Meralgia paresthetica is that it effects the outer side of the thigh, the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous, my issue is below the knee on the Peroneal Nerve. I'm thinking from looking this up that this might be more my situation, Common Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction. But I will certainly update with information once I have it from my doctors.
