Those look a little large to be giving a bypass patient... Going home with pills is totally the norm. You'll be on some form of acid reduction pill, some form of as needed pain med, various vitamins, some pain meds, blood thinner shots, and a list of other things. Granted every hospital and doctor is going to be different, but it seems a little off to be giving a bypass patient a pill that large, that soon after surgery... but, if it didn't cause issues, it didn't cause issues.

After sleeve surgery how much time do I need off from work?
Matt Z replied to Wanda247's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I personally took 2 full months for my band back in 2011 and again for my bypass in March. Different jobs each time. I took the time because sure you might be healed up enough by 4 weeks to be ok, but I wanted to give myself the extra time to get used to the new routine. I didn't want to be at work and have food cause some issues that would be embarrassing to have happen while at work. I'm glad I took the time. It gave me more time to focus on me, my health and my recovery. As well as allowing me time to figure out the food situation and start getting the proper levels of exercise I need. It takes 2+ weeks to form a habit... so once I was cleared to lift things over 20 lbs (which happened at the 6 week mark) I started hitting the gym. Been going daily since. Do what you need to, but talk to your surgical team about how long they typically request sleeve patients say out of work and your specific situation. -
if the pills are small enough (which if I recall correctly the morphine ones are tiny) then I wouldn't suspect it would be a major problem. If you can take a small sip of water, which you'll be doing not long after you get to your recovery room (or the next day depending) you'll be fine with tiny pills.

Hair falling out at 4 1/2 months post-op
Matt Z replied to LoriWhip's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yup My beard does shed... and my beard is longer that some folks hair LOL -
So... Anyone from the website bother to review these questions at all?

Directly out of surgery you'll most likely be on liquid Tylenol in your IV with a pain pump with morphine (you have to hit the button, it's metered and timed so you can't just keep hammering on it). You will more than likely be given the chance to take a morphine pill or so after they take the morphine pump away. Once you are home, it's just pills. They don't give you a lot either. That said, after the first 24 hours after surgery... I really didn't need any additional pain meds. I only hit the pump before I had to move too much (or if I was having a hard time sleeping) but by day 2 post-op, I didn't need any of them. What's disturbing or crazy exactly?

Hair falling out at 4 1/2 months post-op
Matt Z replied to LoriWhip's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The timing is going to be different for everyone, that's just 1 explanation I found. Some folks don't lose hair at all, some drop all of it... I'm just hoping that my beard doesn't fall out!! **THAT** would suck! -
Hair falling out at 4 1/2 months post-op

@AshAsh1 you are correct that we naturally have a "telogen" phase, but what happens to WLS folks is that there is a shock to the system that causes more follicles to enter telogen than would normally do so. "For instance, 6 weeks after restrictive dieting or a high fever you can experience telogen effluvium (diffuse hair fall). This occurs when your anagen phase is cut short and many hairs enter the telogen phase all at the same time." From https://www.philipkingsley.com/hair-guide/hair-science/hair-growth-cycle/ -
I'm dying here trying not to laugh my a$$ off at @gr8ful1 's super innocent reply! I totally understand the OP's question and than I read that I'm like... WTF? This dude's church friend got them into swinging and there are 100+ swingers? And dance lessons and a live band? Too funny! My wife bartends and I bounce a few parties for some friends of ours that run a Swingers Event. The groups are always fantastic bunches of people from all sorts of walks of life and shapes and sizes. I'll have to see if she's got any information on groups out your way @IttyBit

A month later... you might want to talk to your PCP or Surgical team... that's not normal.

Have you purchased any goal clothing for after surgery?
Matt Z replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't. I have no idea how far I'm going to end up going. Right now I'm in the process of still trying to wear the larger clothes while I shrink so I don't have to keep buying more damn clothes! From a 50 waste to a loose 42 now... I'd hate to start converting all my sizes over to 42's and then have all of them end up too big! -
You can try some of the higher end proteins or plant based to see if that helps your symptoms. Not all protein powders are created equal! The higher quality ones can be worth it if you have issues. Worth checking into at the very least.

Protein Shakes And Nausea/Diarrhea?
Matt Z replied to AstroCat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just for laughs, you should see about getting a sample of some plant based proteins from your local supplement store, they will usually offer you some samples to try. It's possible that @Orchids&Dragons is correct and you've become intolerant to the potentially highly concentrated levels of lactose that can be present in some of the lower grade proteins. My father is very lactose intolerant and he was able to eat certain cheeses due to the low lactose levels. Or take a lactaid pill before you consume a shake to see if it helps. At this point, it's worth trying out to see if it helps rather than not. -

Matt Z replied to LoriWhip's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The fallout actually happens when your follicles "restart", they go into a sleep/rest mode during certain times / stresses, surgery and greatly reduced calorie intake can trigger follicles to rest, so when they finally "wake up" they will start making new hair, shedding the old hair that's been chilling out during the rest phase. https://www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietitian/understanding-hair-loss-after-bariatric-surgery/ How long it lasts will really depend on what % of your follicles went dormant. But the good news is that your follicles are back in business! -
@sasa_maria Did you do your psych eval yet? Mine was listed as being 2 hours long (didn't take anywhere near that though)

Further options for failed Endoscopic Sleeve
Matt Z replied to Debbie Jeany's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gottcha, I wasn't sure either, just posted the definition of the word... I think @Frustr8 might be right, they might have done a Sleeve Plication rather than the typical sleeve procedure and the bottom portion of the OP's "sleeve" has come apart and opened up. Not sure how it would "open up" otherwise... Guess we'll see what the OP says. -
Worried about surgery setting me back
Matt Z replied to millerla4's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Figure out your BMR here https://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator (Your BMR is the amount of calories your body needs just to be alive, think in a coma, alive but not moving). And don't eat more than that per day and you should be fine. My current BMR is 2047, so barring any medication that causes weight gain etc, if I laid in bed all day and didn't consume 2047 calories, I'd be at a deficit and my body would be forced to use it's energy stores. Stay under your BMR if you can't exercise and you shouldn't have a problem with weight gain. -

Had my bypass surgery yesterday!!
Matt Z replied to Ppdunn22192's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! Puree's suck after a while, but once the real foods start, it's quite nice. -
Have you taken a pregnancy test? LOL Kidding! Keep a bottle of water next to you when you sleep. I find that I have to take a drink a few times a night due to oral dehydration, I have a CPAP so that compounds the issue. I could see how it could cause nausea.

Drinking protein "shots"?
Matt Z replied to coyote's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This has been proven false many times. Your Nurse friend might want to check the research. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hst3.htm https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3595342/ -

What protein are you using that you are getting 25 grams of protein in only 2 tablespoons? -
New food allergies post-sleeve
Matt Z replied to sideeye's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Food sensitivities / intolerance is talking about not being able to tolerate certain foods, as in , your stomach doesn't like them anymore, I don't think I've heard about people becoming allergic to foods post surgery. Honestly, you should be calling your surgical team or PCP with this, they will be able to do allergy testing to verify that's the cause of your issue. -
3 days post-op: worsening pain
Matt Z replied to kellibambam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@kellibambam Did they give you an incentive spirometer? Are you using it? Do you have any type of compression gear you can wear to see if it's the pull of your stomach/gut causing the issue? Never hurts to call up your surgical team with questions, ESP only 3 days out! As stated, it could also be the reduction in your pain meds.
